******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

I finally got this running at an acceptable framerate (probably helps now I've upgraded my PC).
I played a bit took on a mission crashed into a planet as I look away for too long. Retried, crashed into another planet also for looking away too long. Weirdly, both times I was looking up the keys to do things like retracting landing gear etc.

But the weirdest thing happened when I finally got a few things worked out. Tell me if this is to be expected:
I got a security mission to clear a base. I found the base which started shooting at me so landed about 3000m away. NO problems, I enjoy the walk to get a feel for the controls.
I finally enter the base, go down a level and find some 'good guy' - I think they're good as they don't try to shoot me. The quest is down to kill 4 out of 10 baddies. So I run around and figure out that the bad guys are the ones with purple armour on. I take them out (found out I forgot a backpack so couldn't loot stuff - wow looting is **** anyway.. how can they get that bad?)

Anyway, I finally start the trudge back to my ship when I saw 2 ships fly over head to roughly where I had landed my ship. I saw some sort of fire fight. Kept walking (this took a good few minutes as it was quite a distance) and returned to find my ship had gone.
It was dark by now but I found, what I thought to be fireflies but I think it was supposed to sparks from my wreckage. There was nothing there. I did have the blue hud icons for the hatch but I couldn't interact with it.

So, what happened? Was my ship destroyed? Was this real players or AI? I quit in disgust but when I return will I be dead again? My oxygen was refilling fine but my hydration was dropping a lot.
What a weird game, the sense of scale was awesome but it is so definitely still an alpha.

I am quite tolerant when it comes to games. I spent time researching the game prior to trying it, someone linked a beginners guide here and I watched it, but simply this game sucks! I spent most of my time running around stations or bases trying to find, hangers, weapons or shops that sold what I wanted. Far to many controls to worry about from a flying perspective with NO help what so ever.

I attempted to do a mission and it bugged out, ended up spending ages trying to shoot some target and it just never took any damage, wasn't even sure I was doing the right thing, no indication you are actually progressing. Landed my ship on a planet to find it had just disappeared, went into elevators and it was just a black void with no graphics what so ever.

Spent ages working out the controls to them find I couldn't even move my ship?? I could go on and on, for the amount of time they have had to develop this game it just generally sucks. Won't be buying or putting money into this what so ever, the worst experience I have almost ever had on a game in a free few days.

I have a friend who started with me, he didn't even last 2 hours before he was so annoyed he just quit right off!

That's a shame :(

Yep. But then it is nothing more than an elaborate tech. demo with some crappy bugged gameplay elements tacked on top. I've resigned myself to the fact that my money is lost and this will never be released as a finished game with all the promised features. Although, at least you can have bedsheets that react realistically. So yeah, there's that.

Did you put too much money in to it?

Entirely possible that there could be simple explanations for some of those issues that an experienced player might have been able to help you around, but that's not good enough. I'm done sticking up for the crappy new player experience in the game, I get so frustrated with a couple of friends who overlook nearly every issue in the game with comments like "oh yeah that's a known bug on the issue tracker, go read the workaround" and similar... CiG need to see more people in your situation and then actually pull their finger out and add some level of interactive new player experience to the game, it's far too complex a game to just throw you in with nothing.

Went and visited the Drakecon event ingame on Sunday. Had the best performance I've had yet at Crusader, actually higher fps than I get at Lorville! Hired a handful of ships to fly around in and did some bounty hunting. Scorpius is pretty cool, but not sure it will become "the" fighter that I will work towards buying.

I'd argue that putting any amount of money into this sham is too much, but then hindsight is always 20/20. But to answer your question, not a lot but enough to feel slightly miffed at losing.

There is a variety of gameplay there, more so than many "AAA" games at this point if you go looking.

Is it joined up - not really that's my main criticism and I don't see it happening for years at this point.

Couldn't agree more with new player stuff, but as someone who's been in and out of the client since it's very first edition this is nothing new and I still get lost in the plethora of confusing nonsense controls backed up by a garbage menu system. They have had UI engineers dedicated to getting this right since 2014 and it's still a god damn mess.

Given the progress they've made in the last 12 months and the funding they've raised recently, I'm actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel

I don't recommend anyone buys in to it now without knowing fully what they are getting in to, it's an alpha, not a released game, putting money in now is still effectively getting in to an extended Kickstarter, there is no "new player experience" because it's an alpha/demo, not an actual game.

Agreed, some of the UI is horrific. Over the years we've constantly been told they're working on things, got new versions coming and so on - only for the new versions to be rubbish too. Current inventory system is better than what was there previously, but it's still so far off what it needs to be it's a joke. Interaction menus on things being held in hand are a pain to use, since your character is constantly moving around so clicking on the option you want is frustrating. The screens for recalling ships / buying items are usable, but again it's a UI that would be great if we had a physical tablet, but we're looking at the screen from a distance, trying to click on it with a mouse whilst people potentially run into us when we are doing things - just annoying! Don't get me started on the star map!

Indeed, it is an Alpha. But the problem is, CIG keep having big events to suck in new players, and the first impressions are poor for so many. It just further fires the "Star Citizen is a scam" type comments. I keep hoping for a patch that's mostly QoL features, instead a bunch of new content and bug regressions!

Current inventory system reminds me of Ultima Online, which is from the late 90s and still somehow did it better. It takes too long to manage, is fiddly, if you have a lot of items it's hard to find the item and many of the menus within the inventory system can end up overlaid on top of each other. It's a complete mess. It screams of the same old problem CIG have had - lack of proper project management.

I'd rather they kept on with actually developing the game so we can play the release, rather than wasting time re-doing a startup guide every 6 months when they get a new major system online

The game is just simply not ready and having big events to bring someone like me in to try it, well its just stupid because I just had a really bad bad time in this game over maybe 20 hours of playtime (maybe a bit less I was getting so frustrated)

It does scream of a scam, the company has had millions in cash and years and years to do something special with this game and this is what they have come up with, the new player experience is absolutely terrible!
