******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Its still a very good looking game full stop, for what it is its still awesome.

People are looking at Starfield and thinking that's the new benchmark for this sort of game.

A few things about that, Starfield is not this sort of game, when you select a place to land and lock it in on your far better version of the star map what do those same people think is going to happen? I'll tell you what if think will happen, it will go in to cut scene of you landing, no atmospheric flight, no ground vehicles, no way at all to travel far from a designated landing zone.

Because the planet is not a physical ball in space, in real time real space, if you know what i mean, where you land is a procedurally generated block of land a few dozen if that KM, its not the same thing you're apparently looking at from space.

And while some of the shots seen in the demo looked gorgeous, high res textures, nice lighting, this is nothing CIG couldn't do with a relatively straight forward update, higher res texture just means you'll need a GPU with more VRam, but from a dev pint of view its fairly easy to do, BTW Starfield will be heavy on VRam, expect 8GB cards to not like it.
The lighting, that requires more work, but CIG are more than capably of it.

Lastly, i was not impressed by the level of detail and quality of the 3D assets in the city they showed, IMO cities in Star Citizen look much better, the ships and ship interiors, in Star Citizen those things are on a completely different level to Starfield, as is weapon modelling and detail.

I can't remember which official video it was but there was a question about higher res textures and 1 of the devs said they are ready but they want to wait for both Vulkan and server meshing and then the optimizations for both before implementing them otherwise performance would tank.

DX11 is the bottleneck for a lot of thing, graphics and performance, Vulkan is almost done...

From one snow cammo MSR owner to another.... :)

These are quite old now, very pre Hurston clouds.

See the blotch in the sky on the 3'rd image? that's the HUR-L Lagrange point gas cloud. 3 Million KM away...

@humbug I see you are utilising my suggesting of HDR and Calibration to give to others, that is good. It looks so much better.

To note a few things
  • CIG are working on HDR themselves so wont need W11 or just an autocalibration tone map and will be done properly in future and look even better. The next step for people whom want best gaming graphics etc is to get their monitor professionally calibrated or their TV if what playing on and to use OLED monitor ha. People whom pay for a 4080/4090 but not an OLED monitor and calibration I will never understand.
  • Also CIG are working on Ray Tracing in terms of Global Illumination at moment. It likely a long way away but am looking forward to seeing that when it does arrive.
What am still disappointed in is
  • planetary textures that are very 2010 and really the planets/moons don't look great (The cities in detail look amazing when on foot mind to compare there).
  • Foliage is by far their worst side of things asset wise. They so so bad. I don't get why tbh.
  • LOD and pop-in distance are awful and always have been
They fix those elements and suddenly the game will be back to being decent looking throughout.

Yeah, share the goodness, i made a post on Spectrum.

LOD and pop-in distance are awful and always have been

To me it seems worse now than it used to be....

Honestly IMO they need to stop trying to stay with in 8GB GPU limits, it ###### ruins visuals, and i say that as someone with an 8GB card, if i have to turn setting down a bit so be it, if they stop trying to keep to 2015 VRam level's it would probably still look better if i have to reduce graphics setting from Very High To medium, and at least when i get a better card i can have those glorious high res textures.

Also, if the game is using 0.5K to 1K textures is not actually 4K when you run the game in 4K, because the textures are not 4K, they are not even 2K .

Yep those textures are super low res still as well. They said they had no interest in increasing them at moment either. I mean I am surprised they look as good as they do considering the low res of them but yeah just so far away from what could be.

I wish they made the high end PC specs that are out now as the minimum spec because it will be another 5yrs/decade to get to beta anyways meaning that we will have much more advance hardware by then by 3 to 4 generations and so just aim for what is needed with multi-core CPUs 8 core min at 5Ghz, 32GB System memory and 16GB VRAM with PCIE 4.0 NVME. Yeah lots of salt would come but it would be better for the game.

The classic:
"I'm hiding in all this tall grass, how did they know I was there?!"
"I shot you from 50m away, what grass?"
:(

I don't mind the graphics and textures we currently have knowing that the other systems aren't in place. When we can constantly have 60+ fps then that's the time to up them. Transistiion to new tech that can do both (effectively what they're doing) being the best outcome.

I am trying to catch up with the coming features and additions to game and reading a bit about Pyro.
Pyro from what I understand is a completely different system to Stanton, is this correct and if so, do you think Stanton is more likely a temporary system and will be taken offline when Pyro is released with maybe better optimisation/textures/vulcan a bit like they are doing with the station Port Olisar and Seraphim Station?

This just popped up after posting this and I think it has answered my own questions, but just started it.
Very interesting watch and exciting for the future, but I honestly don't think Pyro will come as quick as they claim but who knows.

Pyro has a long history.

In theory, it's already done but because they have had to wait for server meshing, they have continued to flesh it out completely with missions, factions and even the large ruin station looks to be near complete.

Before they was going to launch it without ruin station (the main hero landing place) and without some of the factions and missions as the planets themselves where pretty much done.

They also have had to spend time doing the jump gates as well as adding ship to ship Refueling.

Right now, the only thing stopping pyro being released tomorrow is server meshing and the jump gates

'If' it is finished why can't they just add it as a system you can choose to be in from the main menu, surely it would be beneficial to have people in it and testing

I mainly have occasional stutters in major cities and Ghost Hollow, but not unplayable. What are your pc specs?

13900K, 4090, 32GB 4000MHz memory, Windows 11 and the game is on a 2TB gen 4 NVME, So speed is not an issue.

Every game I have runs like a dream, It's just SC, I know it's still in alpha but the stuttering is horrendous.

Have you tried running the game with the E-Cores disabled?
