Ole's sacked, who next?

The Glazers have not sacked Ole, and are unlikely to do so any time soon, so discussing the pros and cons of conte is a bit of a moot point.

Not true. By all accounts they are now drawing up a succession plan, the next 3 games are difficult.

Short of a miracle he's gone, just a case of when. Hence why I'd prefer the caretaker route as it's not really fair on Ole.

No, I wasn't disputing the term pressing or defending from the front but by saying both Fernandes and Ronaldo aren't very good at pressing/defending from the front isn't comparing them. I'm not very good at football, just like Wan-Bissaka but he's not nearly as bad as me. Whether Fernandes works harder than Ronaldo doesn't mean he's very good at defending from the front. You cannot play a 4-2-3-1 with 4 out and out attackers unless at least 2, if not 3 of them being real workers and Utd are doing it with none.

As for how a 3-4-3 would work, there's plenty of flexibility in how the front 3 could look. You could play Fernandes in that 3 but slightly withdrawn behind a front 2. You could play it similarly to how Chelsea have played it under Tuchel with 2 players fairly central behind 1 striker or with a front 3 using 2 of your wide players. You could even drop Fernandes even deeper and play more of a 3-5-2. As I said in my last post, long term you'd need to upgrade on your central midfielders but you need to do that anyway. The only tricky position is the right wing back but I'm sure Dalot could play there until that's addressed and I've always been of the thought that Utd need somebody better than AWB at RB - a more attack minded player coming in could play both the RB or RWB roles.

Agreed. The suggestion we need an entire new team to play any of Conte's systems is just not true.

3 center backs?

Ugh..

It's only a true 343 if your wide men in the 4 are midfielders. If it's Shaw and Bissaka you're basically playing 523.

You might do that as the poorest club in the league to avoid conceding goals... but no chance you'd do that playing 5 defenders as the richest* biggest* club in the world.

It would be humiliation.

First scenario with Fernandes behind a front two would mean playing one less forward player than we're playing now. 3-5-2 would be the same I think but with Fernandes deeper (presumably as part of a double 8 midfield in front of a 6) so still one less forward player. You said you failed to see how changing system would leave more players out then suggested two systems that leave more players out?

So the first system would be:

--------Ronaldo - Cavani
-------------Bruno
----------Fred----McT
Shaw----------------------Dalot
---Varane-Maguire-Lindelof

and the second would be

--------Ronaldo - Cavani
---------------------------------
----------Fred----Bruno
Shaw---------Matic-------Dalot
---Varane-Maguire-Lindelof

I think is what you're saying. So both those systems would mean currently fitting 6 players into 2 roles and almost zero depth in defence and midfield (with really only Telles to cover the left and Bailly to cover at the back). That to me would require significant personnel changes.

I think it would be extremely hard to fit everyone into that system, theres no Pogba, AWB, VDB Rashford or Greenwood in either of those.

That would be a shocker to the system, however I think United would actually have success with that first line up.

I think he has to try something different because at the moment a 4-2-3-1 isn't working. It's crazy to think even with two CDMs (not that I think McTominay is a CDM in reality) we're still conceding too many goals.

Surely we'll see a system and or personnel come Saturday, he'll be slaughtered for trying the same thing again.

I'm just going to enjoy reading the inevitable "Oles turned a corner" pieces after we beat Spurs. Most people can't look past the last result as a perfect illustration of how the club is run and the progress made.

We really we have zero CDM's apart from Matic (and he just can't play every game now). Both Fred and McT are box to box players and play like 8's, not holding midfielders. Solskjaer has said several times that he plays with a double pivot that is responsible for both attacking and defending play.

Spurs are pretty rubbish aren't they, but they do have a quality side if they turn up. I think Ole is gone in the short term whatever happens, the next 3 games are tricky.

Can’t see how he’s still in a job, I’ve thought it since last year sometime that he’s not the right man to actually progress the team. I didn’t realise he’d actually start going backwards though.

Im not sure Conte is the right fit for United, but I suppose to some extent you can only go for who’s available. Given recent history, it’s going to be a damn hard job for anyone to step into.

The match against Spurs could be one of the worst games of the season at this rate.

---------------Ronaldo Cavani------
-----------_----- Fernandes
-------------- Pogba. Mctominay
Shaw. ------------------ --------- Dalot
Maguire --Varane-- lindelof
Have United ever played 3-5-2?

Gives more protection for Maguire with varanes pace, and Maguire is also able to bring the ball out of defence and find a pass.

I agree that may have to find something new but he also needs to find a way to stop conceding goals.

That clean sheet stat was astounding, mixed with 4 conceded against Leicester and 5 to Liverpool, when was the last time United conceded 9 in 2 games?

A fun 5 minute analysis of what went wrong against Liverpool from a guy who seems like he can't genuinely believe that a professional football team just played in this manner.

What is Phelan's role in the staff? Sounds and Carragher was suggesting that Ole needs to draft in experience along side his team to help, however Phelan has a massive amount of it having been there with Sir Alex.

In the past drafting in someone to help has never really worked.
