"Our attempts to make Formula One greener is ruining the sport" - Bernie Ecclestone

You are aware that the cars are faster in a straight line this year. At the last gp they were faster in the speed traps than last year.
.... and yet still substantially slower overall. This years fastest lap at Malaysia was 4 seconds slower than last year. In F1 terms, that's enormous.

If they didn't make the change the engine suppliers would have left. That would leave you with only the Ferrari engines. It had to be done... let the past go.

In terms of pace, it will get quicker. Don't compare this year (first year) with last year (3 or 4 years of minor tweaks, so very evolved cars / designs). They will speed up.

Its as if the FIA have made changes to the rules to slow them down or something...

All the lost time at Malaysia is in high speed corners. Aero grip has been dropped and a reliance on mechanical grip returned. Which is something people have wanted for ages. But now we are heading that way, people are still complaining?

How? There will be no more power available and aero opportunities are severely limited compared to previous years. Oh and the tyres are harder too. Basically it's a castrated formula now.

So, my point is that it isn't the engines that are making them slower. It's the tires and aero changes that's lowering the cornering speed.

If these changes were with the older v8s, then they would probably be much slower.

If they are hell bent on reducing costs they'd be better having 50% race distance with balls out racing from start to finish rather rather than having drivers cruise around for 90% of the race nursing cars to the end like it is now, they could even get rid of a practice session or two... they won't do either of those things though because they'll lose TV/sponsorship revenue.

They've been trying to slow the sport down since the late 90's when they introduced grooved tyres, it's got ridiculous now though what with fuel/tyre conservation being taken to an extreme and this years engines.

Yes they probably would be slower. But we are not talking about V8s that are slower, we are talking about new "green" V6s that sound like leaf blowers being slower. The overall effect of this year's changes are happy engine manufacturers and a significant number of fans unhappy with what F1 has now become.

You can talk up the new regulations all you like, unhappy fans equals less £££, and that is the only reason F1 exists. For that reason alone I am almost certain this year (and probably next) will be looked back on as the time F1 lost the plot. Hopefully someone will have enough sense to realise this before it's too late.

It is a joke, nowhere near the pinnacle of motorsport anymore. When you have to save fuel and engine components you compromise the racing, end of. I'm a Hamilton fan and was glad he won, but man was the "racing" dull!
It's too restricted nowadays, and sadly I think that it won't ever recover.

People acting like cars have never been slowed down before. It happens most rule changes, time then get quicker over the following years.

People act like f1 has always had big engines.
People act like f1 has always sounded good.

People act like f1 has had good close racing, it never has, most seasons are always dominated by 1 team. F1 is not about close racing. Eant that go to a same spec series.

People act like this is the first season they have to save fuel, when actually there's far less fuel saving than the last few years.

You will never get balls out racing and you haven't for decades, as that is not the fastest way to complete a race and hasn't for a long time.

So basically a load of emotionally charged moaning from people who should know what F1 is about and moaning from people who seemingly didn't understand what F1 is about. Combined with some massive rose tinted glasses and forget how F1 has been for decades.

I'm over my anger of yesterday & just feel sad now. I am sticking to my word though & just not going to watch it any more.
I have Moto GP, WSB, BSB, Touring cars & anything else new I can find. If I fancy some F1 I'll watch a Historic race.
Lots of things have been ruined as I've gradually got to this ripe old age but this is has to be one of the worst spoilers in the history of man.

How to rubbish the opinions of many of us who have been watching and enjoying F1 for decades, in one statement!

Perhaps you should be working for the FIA?

Having finally caught the first F1 race yesterday of the year, glad Hamilton won...i have to say really disappointed with the way the cars sound. Just doesnt seem to have the same goosebump feeling as it did last season, they remind me a bit like the indycars with the whistling of the turbo.

Seriously i miss and really miss the screaming F1 engines of last year, i heard they were looking into bringing back the noise with a few adjustments but i dont think that will make it anywhere closer to the noise we had last yr.

Cars have always been slowed down by rule changes, and then the designers have managed to speed the cars up again. Off the top of my head, to slow cars down over the years they've banned: turbos, double-diffusers, ground effect skirts, active suspension, automatic gear changing, large front and back wings, aero winglets, slick tyres, slotted/profiled undersides, blown exhausts, exhaust gases as downforce generators, etc. By the end of the season they are usually as fast or faster as the previous year. This year is no different, but we've seen so much stagnation, a big rules change has shaken things up more than usual.

I read somewhere that one of the reasons for the fuel flow limits was because otherwise the engines could potentially put out 2000 bhp, and there would be dangerously massive difference in car speeds if people turned their engines up and down during the race.

Yep. No fuel flow limit would mean cars could have a massive overboost button and deploy 2000bhp for a few seconds and obliterate people down the straights. F1has enough push to pass buttons, it doesn't need more, especially not one that teams with thirsty engines couldn't use.

I couldn't get over how the McLaren took two straights to pass a Caterham with DRS. Near the end of the main straight. A 2008 McLaren could pass a F2008 in one straight at Hockenheim before the corner with no DRS.

Also, how awful are these fixed gear ratios? Would the engines sound better if they could max out the gears for each track? The racing sounds like they're all cruising.

Reminds me of rFactor going to a new track while having long gear ratios.

This thread is hilarious. The cars have less aero, ground effect and harder tyres to slow the cars down and make them harder to drive - putting the skill back into it, yet those who have watched it for years seem to be surprised by this  As mentioned a couple of posts up, they claw this back over the seasons then repeat.

Regardless, Duke. It's still dire, Duke.

Look how so many people are getting sick of it. Read all the motorsport forums. Lets see you go laugh in their faces.

They are sick of F1 after two races because, as usual after major rule changes, the cars are slower for a bit? I see. I don't dare open the GP race threads on here anymore for my own sanity :p

I guess all these people must be wrong, eh Duke. Even some of the teams complained that it's wrong these cars are 2 - 4 seconds slower than last year.
