Playstation 4 being announced February 20th?

Chances are it was running on a dev pc then? Would explain why we didn't see a ps4 if design isn't finalised.

Exactly

I think one or two publishers stated they had dev ps4 kits in their office (but saying that, Im wondering if a "dev kit" is actually a pc anyway lol)

Almost certainly shared not exclusively for the GPU, note the CPU is a custom 8core AMD with Radeon tech.

Yes it is unified memory, you are correct - shared between cpu and gpu

This thing won't come out for 9 Months!

and I am not bothered about its spec, lets face it, it is going to be faster than the PS3 and the 360, and whatever it is, the visuals will be better than anything we have now so it will be great, that is all I need to know. From what is on show it looks like a faster machine with a familiar looking controller and that's it. The Wii-U looks far more interesting as a console than the PS4 in terms of functions. However what we don't know is what the games will be like and that is what's going to make or break a console.

I am going to get the console with the best games, best features and best support. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft going to do with their new console, not in terms of spec but features that they are going to offer. Are they finally going to licence for BR now that the format war is over. Are they going to implement some kind of touchsceen like the Wii-U or integrate Kinect into the controller. How about perhaps making their own official X-box Media centre.

btw, when is the Microsoft launch due?

Some of the comments in here are a joke..

You've got a load of people saying how this is already on PC, like this hasn't always been the case with consoles.

Then you have people saying how they just want games and no social/media features and so they are getting a Nextbox, despite the fact the Nextbox will have weaker specs and is rumoured to be more media/social centric than PS4. Sorry but if you don't want that stuff console gaming isn't for you anymore. Unless you want an inferior gaming experience on the WiiU.

Then you have people throwing a wobbly because you didn't get to see the design of the actual console? WHY? Do you look at the screen or the box under it when you're playing a game?

It was also pretty obvious Sony wouldn't announce everything possible and leave E3 empty. So why even get annoyed about that?

Wow.....

I think people asking why some big Publishers weren't there and no huge franchises were seen only need look at the state of the games industry.

3rd party AAA franchises are across all consoles, infact this Xmas new games are likely to be on the existing generation and forthcoming generation because its all about profit.

Given how important this is, somebody like EA making a Battlefield announcement will want their own Press Conference and unveil.

Because it was the unveiling of Sony's console and wasn't a game centric media event. Plus they had loads of developers which is the important part in those type of events even with that Blizzard, Activiston and Ubisoft all showing massive support which are two of the biggest publishers out there! I think the only big publisher missing was EA.

The big franchise games of today we expect like COD, BF etc will be shown at E3, GDC or some other media event. It is far to early for them to show off their games for this holiday season. Even if they were to show anything of at this time it would end up being a 30 second tease with 10 seconds of that being the title logo because that is how game marketing works!

Plus back to my other point if everything was shown off today what we be left for later in the year apart from re-hashes of old demos? November/December is a long way away give it time and you'll see the game you expect on next-gen :p

Don't forget big publishers like EA & Ubisoft might even have some contractual agreement with Microsoft that they won't show off any (or some) of their next-gen games until both platforms have been unveiled.

It was also pretty obvious Sony wouldn't announce everything possible and leave E3 empty. So why even get annoyed about that?

Wow.....

This is how I feel, even game journalists seem to expect everything to be shown off last night? O.o It is mind boggling how big peoples expectations are.

So let me get this straight Sony had a pressed that lasted several hours about the ps4 in which they showed a handful of games, a controller and guideline system specs?

Where was the big ea/dice announcement? They didn't give launch dates/pricing info? Or even show us the console?

When is ms presser expected?

Diablo 3 on ps4 could be interesting

Its 10 months before the release, why would they blow their entire wad now, what do you expect?

There's E3 yet where we'll get drip fed more info to keep the hype running, then all the other large expo's. At the minute its working, Sony can biscially have my money and I'll bet there's some freaked out execs at MS today because the 8GB of GDDR5 is MASSIVE.

They had some big games shown as well and developers did general seem really interested in the hardware and the notion of games being interactive everywhere. Some of the demos were kind of disappointing in the way they straight up looked like video even though they were supposed to be live demos. I don't mean CG videos but just pre-recorded :p Which I can't blame the devs for but it shouldn't be shown as a live demo.

Blizzard announcement was great and its nice to see they seem generally interesting in the hardware. Then we got to see the controller as well as the date which is probably more than I was expecting.

I'm not sure why people are bothered about not seeing the console? We know what it can do visually and I think we are in an era where the physical look of the device wouldn't be a massive issue. Plus if they played all their cards now how boring would Sony's E3 be compared to Microsofts (if they do their unveiling at E3).

Overall the press conference was actually more than I expected and a little too long winded with the whole philosophical side of what the PS4 is going to be. But I'm looking forward to seeing more about it :D
It was a pretty big fail to be honest - the highlight was Watchdogs but then that's coming to everything so its not exactly an exclusive.

I'm not sure how you can say big games are coming to it, as if people really wanted a new KZ? Don't think so.....
And all the other stuff just looks like typical pre-console launch bs games, that drive club for instance - you just know that's going to be a good idea terribly executed just so that Sony can claim their sharing/social media thing is all good and stuff.

Blizzard are just out for the money, its hilarious that they have announced that they are releasing an unfinished game on an unfinished console and its coming to ps3 aswell. mugs will buy that game and they will deserve to get shafted hard.

and the biggest sin - not even showing the actually console they are talking about.

well the next drip drip of news will be at pax east when diablo 3 is shown on the ps3, but id expect some ps4 news surfacing there from a few dev's doubt there will be anything playable as that will be what e3 will be used for, and then tgs is september for a full blown sales pitch for the expected november launch.

as for what it looks like, they will still be messing with the final design i bet for another month then it will be mass production a go go.

Capcom, quantic dream showed off some impressive stuff. We saw another final fantasy and we saw the new infamous. Ontop of killzone and watchdog

Why do people care so much about not seeing a plastic box? What it looks like means nothing to me.

They don't. Or most don't. They just see others using capital letters, lots of exclamation marks and feigned 'anger' and join in too. Monkey see monkey do. As always to feel part of a collective group. Happens all the time with big announcements. If the first 4-5 posts are positive, everyone is positive, if those posts are negative, everyone is. Then comes the outlandish claims like 'Sony just lost the nextgen'. How this will fail on day 1 and the usual.

Really, just another day on OCUK with product announcements.

It's rumoured that the new Xbox will run 8gb of DDR 3 and some much smaller EDRAM for moments when quicker speed is required.
We know from experience that RAM speed is the smallest influence on FPS, so we really need both machines released and hacked to pieces to work out what's faster - GDDR is hotter and more power hungry, if its resulted in a slower CPU or GPU solution then the net result is no more power and a cost (either to them or the consumer) increase.

Tldr - need to wait and see

i think a lot of it is the typical anti sony crap from pc and xbox owners (same as what happens the other way), iv watched this rubbish since the mega drive turned up and then the snes.

people get upset when theres another option that maybe better than their preferred choice. without even thinking they will rage hard at it and hope it dies under a sea of negativity.

the ps3 couldnt have been anything further away from a pc if it tried.

a brand new non x86 cpu, unified memory, br drive (when they didnt exist anywhere else on release) none of which had yet appeared in a pc. Cell processor and unified memory still dont

Dragon’s Dogma 2 - one for japan, no one in the west cares
FF - one for Japan , no one in the west cares. FF is stale, people lap it up for about a week then realise that japanese RPG's are **** and have been done better by the likes of bioware.
Infamous - probably one of sonys better IPs.
killzone - just no.
watchdog - coming to everything under the sun.
Quantic Demo - did an Nvidia 2007 with that face, if you own a pc you saw that exact same thing years ago.

it says a lot when watchdogs gets the biggest applaud of the night, people are fed up of sequels for games and want new refreshing IPs with some bite to them. Christ even Sony must know that as they have to subtitle everything instead of numbers now.

Ya know what would have got people excited? Naughtydog bringing a new IP to the table under the ps4 power - that will sell these consoles. Not some crappy shooters, dire RPG, hack/slash games that weve all played 3 times before.

Just read that watch dogs was being run on an i7 based PC with a 7970 GPU in the live demo. I doubt if its true but could mean Sony do not have components ready for a prototype.. ?
