Playstation 4 being announced February 20th?

with the new architectures of the new consoles being nearer to that of PC - will there really be such a future gulf of "usable" performance for the same hardware ? how much of an overhead is Windows for instance on a decent PC with lots of RAM and far more CPU power than is needed for even the most demanding game ? Serious question

It's the set hardware, DDR5 RAM and direct access to the hardware that will make a difference for the PS4.

I have to admit I do find the 8gb GDDR5 of interest - and quite exciting - in a weird techie sort of way

we'll have to see how it pans out - but I do admit it looks promising - ie hopefully will be easy to max out the performance from it

we've heard a lot about the GPU - but do we know anything more re the CPU ?

Posted on AMD's site...

What exactly is a semi-custom APU? Let me elaborate:

At the most basic level, an APU is a single chip that combines general-purpose x86 central processing unit (CPU) cores with a graphics processing unit (GPU) and a variety of system elements, including memory controllers, specialized video decoders, display outputs, etc. Our semi-custom solutions take the same treasure trove of graphics; compute and multi-media IP found in our APUs, and customize them for customers who have a very specific high-volume product that could benefit from AMD’s leading-edge technologies.

In the case of the PS4, we leveraged the building blocks of our 2013 product roadmap – the same technologies you find in the latest AMD APUs powering PCs, ultrathin notebooks and tablets – to create a solution that incorporates our upcoming, low-power AMD “Jaguar” CPU cores with next-generation AMD Radeon™ graphics delivering nearly 2 TFLOPS of compute performance! This unique APU architecture enables game developers to easily harness the power of parallel processing to fundamentally change the console gaming experience. Not only creating the opportunity for new possibilities in software design, but also faster and more fluid graphics.

This is going to be a very exciting year for gamers, especially for those with AMD hardware in their PCs and consoles, as we have even more game-changing (pun intended) announcements still to come.

Look for some more exciting things happening at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March when we will provide even more info on how we are working with game developers to make AMD the hardware of choice for running the best games!

It's the set hardware, DDR5 RAM and direct access to the hardware that will make a difference for the PS4.

The GPU in the PS3 only had 256mb to play with. Having 8GB of Unified memory in the PS4 is a huge leap compared to PS3.

The hardware this time is pretty perfect for what it needs to be, and being linked closely to the pc will make development easier and pushing the console graphically will happen quicker.

does sound like it will be genuinely 8 actual cores then :)

8 cores at 1.6ghz supposedly.

bring it out already then :)

be interesting to see what MS bring out

I like my PS3 - but always found the 360 a better community experience (much better than PC too in that respect)

please please - no "updating" - "updating" - "updating update" - when you load a game for first time in 2 months or so - even drives my son mad sometimes

When are ms expected to announce launch? When is next ps4 presser?

Could be at GDC at the tail end of next month if rumours are correct, but they'd have to announce it pretty soon surely, unless they want to pull out an epic surprise to attendee's.

I'd imagine they'll just wait until E3 and one epic 2-3 hour unveiling.

Wonder how much money that extra 4GB of GDDR5 memory is costing. Hope it doesn't bankrupt the whole company. :D

I can't see them making much profit from each console sold. I think PS4 will either make or break Sony this time round considering their past financial performance being pants.

One thing that stood out last night was the integration of PS4 with other devices including vita, tablets etc, looks promising. I know you can use the PSP with PS3 but its not like carrying on playing with the vita where you left off from the PS4.

The problem for them is the Xbox will have the same type of integration across similar devices, the best use of it was of course being used on the vita with actual controls to touch, so I wonder how Microsoft are going to solve that issue for a core gamer. USB plug and play perhaps if we want to play on our Windows RT or 8 devices

I don't quite get the fuss. Yes, it looks good, but nothing a mid-high end PC now couldn't do I'd argue. Crysis 3 I think looks technically better than the Killzone demo.

Is it just me or does the touchpad on the controller look like it flips up (like nVidia Shield etc).

rp2000

Just a raised vita rear touch pad :) would be nice wouldn't it

one question. is the ps4 UI made on android?

Doubt it.

Wouldn't the original Crysis give those games a run for their money as well ? or it just me.

No because they arent retards :p. In other news, Catholics have decided to use an Android app as the new Pope...

ps3ud0
