PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Don't really care about back compatibility, 360 isn't worth selling, wouldn't get much for it, I'll just put it in the kids room, if I ever want to play anything I'll just steal it back :D

Hell no... this would certainly be the kiss of death for sony console range..
why would they included this feature in a console when its already available on tvs and being ignored. Chrome books are not selling and lets be honest; no one would want an android based phone/pad if they could have or is willing to pay for an iphone/ipad.

There's the ouya, steambox and Project shield that's all android based and there's a chrome os coming soon for the raspberry pi.

Its not going to happen, but if they managed to get itunes and the apple apps store on it; then we are talking, but I'm an apple fan boy, is there such a thing as an andriod fan boy?

Did it hurt when they lobotomised you?

Developer sources, speaking after meetings at CES, have told VG247 that the next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops. Conversely, the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be able to achieve 1.23 teraflops.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

While PS4 will have greater grunt that 720, however, the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told. Our source said that 3Gb is reserved for the OS, apps and security, leaving 4-5Gb for games.

Orbis will have 4Gb of RAM, said our source, of which 1Gb will be reserved for for OS, security and apps, leaving some 3Gb for games.

Both machines will supposedly have have the ability to read 100Gb Blu-ray discs.

Durango is apparently based on the Radeon HD 8770 GPU.

PlayStation 4 has been previously rumoured to be built on AMD’s A10 APU.

I think it'll be a disaster for the console that has half as less RAM as the other one. :(

Hmmm... these rumours don't paint a good picture to me. The raw power of the next Xbox to be less that the PS4 is disappointing. I'm a 360 gamer mostly, the PS3 sits fairly untouched, so I would prefer the sequel to the 360 to at least match the PS3 in power.

Further disappointment is the amount of memory the 360 has. 8GB is all good - then you realise that 3GB(!!!!!) is reserved for the OS. What is MS doing?? Copying it's Windows performance - in other words for every increase in performance the hardware gives, the OS takes another massive chunk out without providing much more. This is a GAMES CONSOLE. I don't want any OS that takes 3GB just to sit in the background behind my games. I want that GB for my games, not for the advertisers and who knows what other 'Apps' that i don't want. When you look at it, the Sony vs MS game memory isn't all that different.

4Gb is plenty of RAM for a console isn't it :/ This gen has 512Mb doesn't it? I think atleast an 8 fold increase might be enough.

Let's face it, they'll end up being much the same powerwise in all likeliness. Even if they aren't devs will still develop for the lowest common denominator.

Well if Kinect is inbuilt that thats gonna take a lot of processing and RAM. Totally agree with your point though, why Id be against anything inefficient as the OS, especially if you consider the efforts MS (mainly) and Sony made in reducing the OS RAM footprint this time around post release.

Youd think theyd have learnt by now. I swear RAM is relatively less expensive than it was when the last consoles were released and right now 4Gb is considered a PC gamers minimum.

Not really, right now it might be, but you would have said the same thing that about 512Mb when the X360/PS3 specs came out and look where we are now, the PS3 grunt especially is restricted due to the amount of RAM it has. Also far more likely to have more background apps/services running too...

I don't see why, if you have a game running you don't need any background apps running (except the OS stuff for messages/music etc)

How many more background apps do you think will be running next gen compared to this one?

I'd say the consoles will be a lot more multi-task capable this next gen. So you won't have to quit your game if you want to do a Skype video call or browse the net. That's where the RAM will get gobbled up.

I agree they are flooding me with crap I'm not interested in and never look at other than when I fall into a menu by mistake trying to navigate their dreadful interface. I wouldn't mind if you could turn it off, that's why I now game pretty much with the Ethernet cable unplugged.

a web browser doesn't take up much memory, I still can't see the amounts quoted being a problem.

Honestly it's looking more and more like Microsoft are aiming for the next Xbox to be a media hub with kinect based casual games as a side thought. I've got a feeling Microsoft are going to screw the hardcore gamers in favour of casual sales, all thanks to Nintendo's success with the Wii.

This, really.
Vita does an excellent job of multi-tasking, when it comes to flipping in and out of games/apps or even sleep IMHO. Would be good to see such shenanigans present in these next-gen iterations from MS and Sony.....and RAM would be key here, I would think :)

If you can think it, more likely it will be on it (social media/communications for sure) - you need to stop thinking of a console that just does games or a single task and consider it more like a media entertainment system that can game. On a PC you can easily recitify that memory usage, doubt youll have that same flexibility on a console...

4Gb isnt probably isnt too little, but its not like 1080p textures wont eat into 1Gb of that let alone all the other effects on top of that. When you think like that 4Gb isnt that much really...
