Ryzen 3900X thread

Hmm odd issue here.

Updated by X570 Aorus Pro bios to F6a (ABBA) and it won't boot from my NVME boot drive. It appears as a device within the bios but under advanced > Boot options it isn't there. It does appear within the boot options under EZmode but correcting that does nothing.

I am back on the launch bios again until I can find out what is going on.

On the brief time on the F6a bios I can confirm my 3900x seemed to boost a little harder on the second CCD (~4.3 vs 4.2-4.3) but didn't show any obvious difference on the first CCD (4.6 vs 4.6).

Did you try clearing the CMOS and resetting to optimised defaults, assuming this an option for Gigabyte. Also when my NVMe dropped out I had to remove all power to the board for it to appear, not had an issue since.

Report that to Gigabyte. They might have a hotfix/beta BIOS version later than the release you could try. That's a pretty bad screw up.

Going to report it now. :)

Yep tried that and to clarify the NVME drive shows in the bios (under M2) and is selectable within the boot override but is not selectable in the normal boot options (as in I would have to manually select it each boot!).

EDIT: @GIGA-Man - Are you able to report this through to the bios team?

Assuming you installed with Secure Boot enabled, did you check it was enabled and do you have the default keys installed?

I get problems with it not booting after restarts when it's been on for a while, it loops and resets the bios. Only if its been sat there for a day, if I restart after its all set again its fine as many times as I want.
Where do I report this?

I also have a problem with the nvme not booting but that's a separate issue, it sees it in the bios but says its not there and to unplug all other drives. This happens if Windows crashes due to me overclocking the gpu too much or getting unstable cpu or ram settings.
Turn the power off and then on fixes it however

I have a gen 3 wd black 256gb nvme drive it was working perfect from launch ive updated to the new bios and it can only be seen in the 1st m.2 slot.i have bought a corsair mp600 gen 4 1tb drive and its only working on the 1st m.2 now too.i contacted gigabyte who advised me to try setting pcie to gen 3 or 4 from auto but its a fail for both gen 3 and 4.guess ill have to wait on another new bios lol

I must admit I haven't tried changing the settings from auto or a different M2 slot but the simple fact is it boots absolutely fine with the F3 bios and doesn't with the F6a bios. No changes to the system and running optimised defaults both times.

The only time I can get it to boot correctly is directly after the bios flash. Every subsequent reboot causes the problem I mention above.

I might try downloading the bios again and also upgrading to day F4 and then F6a to see if that solves the issue I am seeing. Got a bit of time to mess with it. :)

Hehe, my chip seems like its getting better with age. One core is over 4.6, but 2 more are as good as at 4.591. Also, never seen every core on chiplet 1 go over 4.5. I'm on an old bios too. Once the bios' are properly sorted out, I might get even more from it.

I reckon they do get better with age. Not just perf but also stability. Mine WAS crashing but I haven't changed any settings. Also I saw my 5th core (of 8) clock in at 4.6 today. Could just me electromigration reaming things out and it'll be dead in 2020

One thing that concerns me though is the juice that’s being pumped into it. 1.5V at max boost is a lot!

I got a Gigabyte X570 I Aorus Pro WiFi and I updated from the F4 to the F6a BIOS with no issues at all. My Crucial P1 1TB NVMe SSD works just superb with it. I also saw my 3900X boost to 4625MHz on a single core. So a 50MHz increase in boost with the ABBA microcode update.

I'm going to be beginning to put my new build together today. Is it generally a good idea to add the CPU on to the motherboard first before attaching the board/unit to the case?

It doesn’t really make any difference. I’d install the board in the case and connect as much as you can, case connections, PSU and peripherals such as your M.2/SSD drives. Keep the cables tidy as you go. Then install the CPU/cooler, make sure you have a good application of thermal paste, I generally prefer the spread method, but plenty of videos out there to check. And then install GFX card last. Once everything is in I like to double check I have everything hooked up correctly. The first time I go into the BIOS I’ll load optimised defaults, restart and then go back into the BIOS again and tweak my memory settings and a few other things.

Depends how big your case is but I'd definitely install the CPU and RAM whilst it's outside the case. If I was using an air cooler I'd install that to the mobo too instead of in the confines of a case. I'd install the PSU and route cables along with any rads and case fans in before I put the mobo in, to save knocking bits of the mobo with heavy PSU or rads.

Thanks, fellas. I'll probably place the board on its box and install the CPU and ram that way. For the meantime, I will be using the stock cooler as I'm waiting on a bracket for the DH-15.

I believe the case is a reasonably nice sized mid-tower so I should be okay.

Blimey, the small triangle on the CPU (for aligning on the socket) is tiny!

Just would like to check that I've done this correctly. I'm pretty sure I have but here's a few pics anyway:

Without a cooler would be much easier to say, but I have a feeling if you did wrong you would already know :D

Edit:

Just use other RAM slots A2/B2 not A1/B1 ;)
