*** Sky TV Cancellation & Negotiation Thread ***

I have just cancelled my Sky subscription and signed with Virgin. Over the phone Sky offered me £64 a month for broadband (not fibre, ~6Mb), phone, line rental, TV including sports (but cut down in other areas).

For an average of £76 per month for the next 18 months Virgin have supplied me with two boxes (one Tivo, one that's slightly different), telephone, line rental, 200Mb broadband, Big Kahuna and Sports. This is still cheaper than I'm paying with Sky currently.

Had to sacrifice Sky Atlantic which is a bit of a shame, however we are getting BT Sport instead and I will source a NOW TV box when there are shows on that I'm really keen on.

Been with Sky 6 years, quite happy to give something else a go for a while. The final nail in the coffin was that they wouldn't send me out a new box despite me telling them that mine is slowly seeing the end of its best days.

I've been with Virgin since November as the deal that they offered was far superior than what Sky did.

And yet I'll be heading back to Sky when the new season starts in August.

It was a nice experiment but Virgin as a TV provider just doesn't cut it.

For everyone that has cancelled and the next day got 50% off or more does that affect broadband?

We have Sky fiber + Entertainment and movies from sky.
If we were to cancel just the sky tv so entertainment and movies would be then get the 50% off plus offer after the cancellation or do you only get this if you completely cancel with SKY (i.e. including the internet)

If so can it all be done online or do you have to phone/chat them?

My 50% off has increased to 60% off and £25 credit 2 months after cancelling, wish I could remove skysports (don't want football, keep F1) for HD in that price.

When i cancelled mine last year(full package) i opted to for the family hd package with 50% off and i still have the F1 channel but no other sports.

The TiVo boxes are very slow and clunky to use but they get the job done.

VM have admitted that, in their push on Internet services, they've neglected TV for too long. Apparently there's a bit TiVo update in the offing (although I can't see it overcoming the basically outdated hardware) and news of totally new boxes later in the year. These will obviously be their 4K compatible answer to Sky Q and it'll be interesting to see where they go with this, i.e. will it still be TiVo or something else?

2 months since I cancelled mine and I've never received a phone call with offers and access to my online account disappeared the day after my services went off so never got chance to check any online offers to stay. Wouldn't say no to a decent offer but haven't missed it too much since it went off.

That was available last year but not this year, SkySports or nothing now if you want F1. Even more confusing if you want it in HD you have to have the family pack, AND pay extra for HD. So F1 in SD is available at £19/mo for SD (60% off) but in HD it's £32.20 a month including 60% discount. My full price HD pack was going to be £35/mo with no discount offered. Bit of a jump from the £17ish I was paying.

If you can still log in to your account (should be able to) then there's a link on the navigation menu at the bottom right that says "left sky in the last 12 months" and all your offers are in there.

By all accounts it will still use the TIVO software initially, then get updated to a new one.

The issue I have though is whether they going to pay the cashola to get the UHD content provided by Sky/BT. Ok they will probably have Netflix, but there is no point in having a 4K box if you aren't going to have any content on it.

And while it won't be a deal breaker for some, it's the main reason I'm going back to Sky-VM just don't really care about their TV side of things.

I can really see BT trying to buy out their TV services soon

I really can't believe that, in this day and age, Sky are still offering non-HD subscriptions and charging more for HD.

Because there are still several million subscribers that either don't want or won't/can't see the benefit of HD?

True - especially the older generation, either dont understand the difference or option between SD and HD or cant see any difference.
Speaking from experience.

LOL, you're seriously trying to tell me that Sky do it this way to allow those who don't see the benefit to save a bit of money?

What total rubbish. They do it so they can advertise lower base prices by excluding the HD pack which the vast majority of customers will want.

VM have never done this and nor does the new Sky Q offering. HD should be included as standard these days. Hell, we're on the cusp of 4K!

Of course.
My mother cannot see the difference and if she was suddenly told that she now had to pay £10 more a month to make the display (to her) look no different then she would leave on the spot.

The reason HD is not standard is clearly so Sky can charge more for the package, otherwise why wouldn't it just be included on the lower rate?

It's clearly not to save money, again using my 60% off prices to get Sports in HD is £32.20 a month... but if I ADD Sky Movies to the bundle the price DROPS to £32 a month (complete package). Sports in HD is not available unless you take the Family Pack so it is not possible to add HD to the £19 sports pack to make it £25/month.

I have no interest in Football but I don't have any option to watch F1 without the over inflated price of having a full Sky subscription for the 10 hours a month my Sky box was in use. If only NowTV was in HD...
