No it doesn't work like that.

You have to contact Sky to cancel.

That's what I thought, my wife signed her dad up to talktalk and hes currently with sky, they told her that nothing was needed to be done on her dads behalf, what a load of bull

Cancelled Sky TV this morning over live chat and got my 40Mb fibre broadband reduced to half price whilst I was at it for the next 12 months (I was considering moving to plusnet purely based on cost). We've been using a NowTV box exclusively for the past few days, I added the Sky entertainment pack at £4.99 and the free one month trial of sky movies (normally £8.99) and we've got access to Netflix via the TV itself which I was already paying for.

They couldn't do me any offers on the line rental (£15.40) or sky anytime phone package (£5.00) but I'm going to monitor the phone bill more closely as I'm not sure we actually need anytime.

Sky TV was £51.75 a month
Fibre Broadband was £20 a month
Sky protect was £9.50 a month

Per month: £81.25. £975 for 12 months

Now paying:
Sky entertainment pack £4.99 (Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living, Sky Arts, FOX, Discovery, Comedy Central, Gold, MTV, Disney Channel)
Sky Movies Pack £8.99 (800+ movies)
Fibre 1/2 Price Broadband £10

New per month: £23.98. £287.76 for 12 months

That's a saving of £57.27 per month or £687.24 over 12 months.

That's a pretty nice saving I think!

The slightly annoying thing is, I'm on a legacy package where when HD first came out I took that up which came with F1 HD too.

I have no interest in Sky sports, which I believe is now the only way to get F1 HD?

So if I cancelled my existing packaged I'd have to spend more in order to get F1 HD.

In short, if I cancelled, I think for them to offer me a reduction, I'd need to move to an alternative package, which after by 6 or 12 month "reduction period" would mean me moving to a more expensive one than I'm now currently on.

I'm paying £35.75 for my "Variety HD" package which includes:-
Variety Bundle (normally £28)
HD and Formula 1.

There's no way I could get this now for anywhere near that cost + the package doesn't exist anymore.

Just saved myself another £12.12 a month. Spoke to tv licensing and I no longer need a tv license.

In the same situation as you, but I also have Unlimited BB and Phone in the package. It was the 2nd time we try and talk out price down after last year's change, couldn't drop it any, in fact, had to add an additional £4ish.

Currently £46 monthly, same package as you but with BB and including line rental. 1 more year and who knows, if Formula E makes me happy, I'll sod the legacy package and go cheaper bill!

Quoted from the TV Licensing website:

If you don’t watch or record television programmes as they are being shown on TV, on any device, you don’t need a TV Licence.

"As they are being shown" means LIVE tv. As we're now only watching on demand tv we don't need a licence.

In theory it doesn't matter what you have it's what you actually use/watch. If you only watch on demand content then you don't need one. It would be up to them to prove you watch live tv. Don't be bullied into paying for something if you know you don't need it.

Just cancelled my Sky subscription, they offered me 10% discount which wasn't good enough so I went through with it. Will hopefully get a call with a better offer.

I'd quite like a new box and also multiroom, am I able to sign up as a new customer in my partners name at the same property when a 50% offer comes along?

I left Sky a few years ago. We have freesat now. No sat bill. Also I download most of my TV shows anyways. So Sky is not worth it.

I just had an online chat with them, and got nout

We're paying:-
Variety HD £35.75 - legacy package (includes F1)
Broadband £7.50
Sky Talk Line £15.40
Sky Talk Anytime £5.00

Nice Mr Mohammed wouldn't offer us anything unles we upgraded to Sky Sports. And prices are going up in September by another £1 BTW.

That said, I didn't openly ask to cancel... Should I have?

Mines going up by £1.50, love it when that letter drops through the post every year....

What makes matters worse is Discovery is being turned into some mindless scripted reality channel, the reasons to keep paying for sky are getting less and less imho.

There are 50% vouchers available via this forum almost all the time. Ask one of the sky regulars to send you one :)
