*** Tado Mini Review ***

So just purchased a TADO along with a extra thermostat and the bridge for the hotwater.

Went for install due to just buying the house and having ZERO idea about the current system as it seems to part of skynet on how it wants to heat the house. I actually think its possessed.

Anyone could install a tado. You specify your boiler and thermostat and they display pictures of how to wire it in. Very straight forward and a complete waste of money paying for installation.

I did think about it, but really cant be arsed to be fighting with a system with 2 different stats, one with 4 wires the other with 3, and all the wires are the same chuffing colour on the older 4 wire one.

Very very tempted to go for the rent option... hate using our current system and the thermostat is in a stupid place. Amazon reviews were a bit ****e though.

Most helpful Amazon review:

Gives you no local control when there is no internet connection!!!

Doh!

Guys anyone with Tado realized its not taking the hour change into consideration since the clocks went back?

Mine is due to come on at 19:00 but has just come on at 18:00

Anyone using IFTTT with Tado?

I've got a few recipes setup to email / sms me when it switches to Away or Home.

I'm just working on interfacing it with my ZWave network to shut off the lights when everyone has left the house.

I've also added "Do" buttons to my Apple Watch to allow me to "boost" the heating and switch it back to auto!

Got a tado yesterday and everything is connected, but I can't actually use the thing until they send me detailed instructions for my boiler, which they don't have yet.

Is there a good reason for this? Can I not just bypass it? Everything's wired up ready to go, but I just get the spanner icon because they haven't yet told me how to do what I've already done!

Edit - I just called customer support and he sorted it immediately. Not sure why I needed to call them but hey, they were very good on the phone.

I've had a Tado for about 18mths - have been really pleased with it. The presence detection on mine & mrs phones works really well (we don't have a 'set' working pattern so regular timers aren't ideal).
Can't honestly tell if it's 'paid for itself in a year' as it claims but it's so convenient that am not really that fussed.
The clincher vs Nest was that it manages hot water as well as heating.
Started off renting it for £4 a month and then bought after about 8mths. They credited back my rental costs against the purchase price.

I'm really, really pleased with mine so far. It's just so much less hassle that the mechanical Honeywell dial nastiness that it replaced.

Likewise the geofencing works brilliantly so far.

If I absolutely had to pick holes in something, it would be the lack of customisability of some of the options in the app. For example, you can't (as far as I can see) tell it to reach a target temperature by a certain time, as opposed to start targeting a temperature at a certain time.

I'd also like to be able to force the stat to always show the temperature on its display, though I completely understand why this isn't the default.

I've also noticed the app and the thermostat aren't always aligned in terms of the temperature they reckon the house is.

However I'm massively clutching at straws, as it's really quite brilliant.

Big fan of mine, it works really well. My brother did take the mick when my wife called me one day to turn on the heating because she had misplaced her phone, the Nexus tab and the iPad. Other than that it has been hassle free.

Am going to be getting this again next month. The reduced rental offer has been rolled over for another month again, so will take that option. Was contemplating purchasing, but is easier to justify the £60 to Top Level Budget Holder. Plus, will be 1st month of heatin gbeing on too, so increased gas bill and can trade it off a saving.

Won't be getting the dual thermostat yet as that appears to have slipped right yet again by another month.

Was wondering if there was any difference between them and going and ordering two of them.....but will hold off for now.

Well the old dial style timer on my boiler died last weekend, so I'm thinking it's an oppurtune moment to replace it with something, was considering the Hive, though it's pretty ugly, but it's on offer today at Amazon (£119 no installation).

Then I saw Scottish Hydro have these for £220 fitted and I'm tempted, prefer the simpler look of the wall unit. Also looks like they will also have smart radiator valve units coming out end of next year as well.

Do I replace my wall thermostat with this and remove the timer unit from the boiler itself and then plug in the wifi unit to my router and that's it?

Does this physically connect to the boiler and need it's own mains power supply?
It depends. Mine replaced the timer unit that was underneath the boiler. Removed it and followed the instructions to rewire the bridge. Wasn't too hard and has worked well since.

The old Hive is pretty ugly, I agree. The new one looks quite nice though. It fits on the same back plate that your central heating / hot water programmer connects to if it was made in the last 10 years or so.
