Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

No golden gear yet and I don't have the grappling hook. I've not really started mining yet, as I say I've just been looking out for caves on the surface.

I mean in Minecraft I would mine down to bedrock and start looking from there, do I need to do similar in Terraria?

I cannot for the life of me build background walls. I select some, left-click, and my little dude just swings it around like a nutter. What do I need to do?
 
I've been having a play around on this for half an hour or so, but I'm struggling a bit. I managed to create a few torches and mine some ore during the day but I'm still learning what the controls do and how crafting works. I feel that there're a few too many monsters spawning during the day and then when I got to night it was pretty much just 5-10 mins of pressing the attack button to drive off non-stop zombie spawns. It would have been nice if they'd given the initial spawn area a bit of a breather for newcomers to play about and get used to things.

The first thing you do is get your axe and cut down some trees to get around 150-250 wood. Use the wood on your hotbar and place it down to make an outline of a box, including the floor, make it about 10-15 blocks wide (I guess) by 4-5 blocks high. Then make a crafting table and put it inside your box. Then make with the crafting table:
1 Door
1 Table
1 Chair
50-70 Wood Walls

Cut a chunk out of your wall 3 blocks high and put your door there, then use the wood walls you created to fill in the background behind your box, if there's dirt or other background behind your box, use your hammer to destroy it, and then re-fill with your wood background wall. Put your table and chair inside your box and then put a torch in there.

Congrats, you now have a shelter.

Just several rooms within your hourse, won't take long for them to come.

Each room need a door, a table, a chair and a light o and have walls covering the back and then they will come, well the guide first, then vendor, then nurse, explosives, and gun man.


How are everyones houses looking?

Post some pictures, will upload me and my friends tonight. Best feature of our house so far is the greenhouse.

My house is a shoddy mess, I'm embarrased about it.

My house is literally 6 rooms surrounding a mining shift which falls straight down to around 3000ft deep, in order to get hellstone (When my armour and weapons are upgraded a bit more)
 
People complain about the mobs but without them the game would be pointless since the building is no where near as in depth as minecraft.

I've got full gold armor and a lightsaber just running around two shotting the mobs :p
