*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

I've reviewed my diet, and also realised that last time I did this program I just wasn't recovering quickly enough - I was basically just taking a PWO shake (my own mix of whey, organic 80% chocolate powder and blended oats). That was it.

I'm now preparing myself with pre-sup and post work out sups. And increasing my calorie intake - probably around 3500-3800 cals per day. I'm on maintenance of around 2800 at the moment.

It's not so much strength only, but size too - it focuses on slow eccentric movements which will help build resistance to moving weights - the concentric is nice and quick, powerful, and that'll also help with strength. Bear in mind that you'll be shifting 75%(ish) of your 1RM for 50 reps, it's not for the faint hearted. But damn it's going to be fun! :D

IF you have any specific questions go ahead. :)

My pre-sup consists of a high carb meal like full wheat pasta an hour before leaving and an apple in the car on the way to the gym, what are you doing?

(please dont say N0-Xplode!)

Erm... I think I'm *slightly* more knowledgeable than that.... :/

Furthermore, this is only for this program, normally I just have a cup of coffee and a banana which is all I need as my diet throughout the day keeps me well satiated and just need that little kick. I've discussed my pre/post work out stack in the supplements thread.

Mansize - any time mate. :)

Ordered some protein and carbs and creatine from MP last night, and Tesco shopping coming tonight.

Last time I ordered from MP was April 2008  I've been out of the gym loop for way too long!

Starting again hardcore from tomorrow, cant wait :D although not looking forward to 1st session, i know im gona feel weak as ****!

It'll come back to you matey! :D

Welcome back to the fold. :)

Sorry, I post very sporadically in the sports arena so I don't know what level people are at when it comes to things. I had a look through the supplements thread and haven't been able to find your plan, I checked the last 2 pages and while I saw you mentioned the change up to supplements to help with your new work out I didn't see the details, got a link?

I'm by no means an "expert" but I feel I know more than the average joe, and certainly enough about how the body works, hormones, nutrition, and general nutrient synthesis within our bodies to be able to enhance it's effect or at least add some synergy with the supplementation I shall be taking. I've been at this for several years, and feel relatively well read on this topic. I'm happy to be challenged though - if you disagree with any of my points or think I'm talking rubbish ( I should request that you don't state it in such a manner though!) by all means tell me. :)

These supps will add no more than maybe 5% at best for my performance, if that. Over 95% of the achievements that people will make is through an improved diet, training regime, sleep and lifestyle change. The last few bits are just a bonus.

We all live busy lives work 50-60hrs+ a week, our bodies aren't designed for such things, as such mimicing a more rounded approach to our diets and giving them what they need can help - but only if you do it right.

I can assure than 90% of people who traing at my gym would receive little benefit from supplementation. Not because they (the supps) don't do anything, they do, but only if you use them properly. 90% of people in my gym, their routines haven't changed for years, the weights lifted has hardly changed. Ergo, they are doing something wrong. End of. They don't have the knowledge. I know it sounds a little arrogant of me, but I am a testament of my own advice and methodology and knowledge. Sure I'm not as good as I want to be, but unfortunately I haven't got time to dedicate myself further (unless I won the lottery of course! :D).

Anyway I'm going off track. AGVT is very taxing on the body, and even with my good diet, and focused training ethos (and I am extremely dedicated) I'm happy to accept that it's not perfect - the stack I have devised should help enhance, protein synthesis, maximise recovery, boost IGF-1 and other anabolic hormones, improve insulin response, and minimise cortisol when not needed. AGVT and GVT and other high volume programs are generally designed for people who dabble in the dark arts. That doesn't mean to say that natural trainers cannot gain from it - they can, but they have to step it up, and give themselves the best chance of development. :)

Indeed. We're not a dedicated sports/bodybuilding forum, as I'm sure you know we're predominantly an IT based forum with lifestyle interests bolted on - which is fantastic IMO to have this diversity.

We've had a few discussions about gear but in terms of topical news articles, i.e. atheletes using them, gym guys using them. That's fine as it's not discussing it's use, how to use them what to do with them etc. Most of us can easily find out information by going to dedicated sports forums where discussion on their use is fine. It's a legality issue - as I'm sure you know you're not allowed to buy/sell them - ergo, it's illegal and as such we don't want it associated with the forums. Remember the forums are based on a reputable buisness as it's platform - Spie would not allow anything that could lead to negative publicity/light on his business. Whilst the forums are independent in some aspects, they are very much linked to the business.

It's just sensible to leave a clear cut rule. Furthermore, as you say, it falls very much under the medical thread/advice rule. Such substances are not like supplements you can buy in the shops, they are hormones and can and do affect your body on a cellular level, and can be potentially dangerous to someone who is ignorant of their use.

Whilst I don't really fancy having a debate about the rules (as they are clear cut) I just wanted to explain the reasons why I and the rest of the mod team are not comfortable with talk of such things. There are dozens of forums dedicated to bodybuilding/weight training who openly discuss their usage and how to use them etc... If you want to discuss it further, please take it to email. :)

I found a good app for the iphone called myfitnesspal - it's free and seems pretty good - you can also add your own foods (i.e. your own recipies, and or shakes etc...) Not bad little app considering it's free.

Yeah I need a new chunkier chain. I'm currently repping out on 35Kg and it's already getting a little tight on the chain - I use 2x10kg + 1x15kg plate. The stitching will take it fine - besides belts are pretty cheap.

It's the best bit of kit I've ever bought myself.

My squats are back on form, 3x10 reps below parallel at 140Kg (not quite ATG) comfortably. I reckon I've got a 190kg in the tank for 1.. hope to get 200kg by may.

Yeah was only £6 for the meter and you can get quick release clips for a couple of £. Can also cut the old chain off while you're in B&Q too!

Nice squatting. Mines progressing, slowly though I am coming down in weight. I think I may have exhausted the effectiveness of 5x5 either that or low carbing/ I just don't in general have the endurance to crank 5 heavy reps out. So seeing how it goes next session, the following one I may addopt a 3 x 10 for back squats.

I really miss high volume leg work. I haven't had a reasonable leg pump in weeks! :(

I may go for a PB this weekend. I'll see how I feel.

Strongman....well we are trying to start its just weather dependent ATM. We wanted to get out last weekend but it chucked it down so didn't bother.

End of March / start of April will be fine, but we can try and get a session in before then as well if people are up for it :D

Sounds good to me! :D Still around Bedford ya?!

Lol :D Hopefully not the sound of bones breaking.

hehe no last time the only person injured was me:

I'm glad that Dorian Yates rabbits on about slow negatives - it makes my obsession with them more acceptable! :D It's great to hear him say that you can't "spot" increase certain muscles or "shape" them. Now I just wish I could develop like him - I know the theory and repeat it ad infinitum (sorry guys :o) but boy I wish I could get the same size! :D

Oh yeah totally, I wasn't having a dig or looking for an ego massage. :) It's just nice to hear that what I do know is being supported by an expert. :)

Cheeky bugger! Though I do wish I had started training sooner :( Only really got into it when I stopped travelling around the world.

There will always be somebody bigger and stronger than you (exception for Ronnie, Dorian, Andy Boulton etc).

You can try your damn hardest and achieve desirable physiques along the way but the majority of our genetics is inferior to theirs unfortunatley :(

As long as you're true to yourself, **** everyone else. :D

I know I'm giving 100%, and I'm achieving my goals. I will hit 600kg this year. I have dropped BF, and I will get bigger.
