*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

I think you're slightly ahead of me, but it wouldn't stop me chasing you :p 32.5 is a bit of a pain right now for me I think xD

Mind you, because of squat, and therefore, bss, and gob squats, I'm not sure how much damage my legs are taking, although the bss are still hard I guess and it takes a hell of a lot out of me. So must be working xD but it makes the stuff that comes after harder xD

Chasing you would certainly be good fun though :)

It's a shame you don't have access to a proper squat rack, it's not really possible to compare it to a smith. I find I really have to watch my legs to avoid injury. I'm doing a lot of rolling about at the moment after doing my HIIT cycling.

I think quite a few people were laughing at me for how turbo I was going on the bike today. **** em' :p

I'll start a blog so you can catch up :)

Yeah, but last year of uni, and only about 3 months left I reckon with exam period, so squat rack isn't a major limiting factor long term which is why I'm not so worried.

I tend to cycle into uni anyway, so turbo on the bike anyway xD Race the road bikes on my poor mountain bike xD

KD and Nitefly, I'm probably about the same strength (sorry, weakness) as you two at the moment. Going to start taking things seriously this year, time to log.

Overhead session:

Warm ups:
Plate presses, tri extensions, body weight squats

Log:
Strict:
70x10
70x10
80x5
90x2
Push press:
90x3
90x3
100x4
100x4
110x2
Knees hurting, getting next to nothing from them so not going heavier.
Back to strict:
80x5
90x3
95x2
100x1

Seated axle press, clean from floor then sit down and press:
40x10
60x10
70x10
80x5
90x5
100xf - sat down horrid, couldn't press from that position.
Drop set:
90x2
80x5
60x5
40x couldn't be assed. Just felt too light and delts were on fire already :)

Thoughts:
My knees are ****ing me right off. Really limiting my overhead progression.
Bicep felt fine on log cleans. Slight tweak and the 110kg flew up so fast I had to put it down first time, it almost knocked me over :)
Strict felt good though, happy with that.

Overhead session:

*snip*

Quick question, Morba:

How much power (not total work done) can you generate via your glutes?

You've mentioned your moniker of 'diesel' because of your lack of speed, so I'm just wondering if you've ever targetted speed as a specific objective, as for certain lifts you seem fine, but then you post how you struggle with the 'explosiveness'?

So I was horrifically ill on Sunday, so spent it doing nothing, also spent yesterday doing nothing, where I was actually quite a bit better. Today, when I have to sit through four hours of lectures and was planning to go to the gym, I'm back to horrifically ill!

Why body ?! why ?!

kd

Yeah, I've got two hours of lecture, then gym, then two hours of lecture, so I'd be on campus anyway. Figure I'll go to the gym, and see how it goes. Worst case scenario I'll have to cut a few exercises out. But I want to at least get the Bench and OHP done. I might cut down my leg exercises a bit as they tend to work me harder, but I'm already having to move my normal Saturday session to either Friday or Sunday because I'm working that day....

In terms of power, not sure. How would I test/check?

I do speed squats and deads and also plenty of glute work through front squats, ghrs, stone loading.

This time last year I was doing more cardio and was doing additional work like box jumps with dumbells, now my knees hate me I do much less of it. i think that is what is ruining me at the moment.

At the moment it really is funny for everyone else, I generate enough strength to move stuff, but its so slow that they start singing the steptoe and sun theme tune lol.

Thinking about it, a lot of it is probably me being lazy. For example I was able to make the 110kg log fly up last night, but then going back down to 80kg for strict it went stupidly slow again. Could be that I need to ingrain the movement pattern into my mind so that it is always *bang* rather than a half hearted clean and a bicep log curl (which kills my biceps lol)

@Morba

Possibly - I suppose it's the discordance between your perception of weights that throws me. I suppose it's an odd thought for a strongman, but have you ever considered dropping down to 75% for acouple of weeks and concentrating on moving the weight/bar/whatever literally as fast as possible?

My coach once commented on how my snatch technique changed with load and movement, so a second pull at 50kg would be very fast through the whole movement, but a hang snatch would be very slow and disconnected because my brain would go a bit funny at the prospect of having to shift such a weight over my head. Could this be applicable to some of your lifts, i.e. you think "hmmm... this is some heavy ****, I'm going to have to think about this..."

No idea - just a thought...

Regarding leg power output, the easiest way to measure this (qualitatively) is the box jump, i.e. how many boxes at a given weight.

Ah, I think I was getting up to about 38" at 130kg. Will have to do a search and see. Think it was 13 or 14 reebok step things stacked up. Not done them in a while though due to my knees.

Yeah we do some speed deads and squats. Fast triples. Most of the time we will incorporate into our working sets some way, though other times we will just do them as a full workout. Should do more though I think.

Definitely do have that mindset sometimes, I know I'm about to do something 90%+ in terms of 1rm.
But then I like to be able to rep 90% as much as I can to make it easier.
It's odd though, as last night I was full cleaning the 100kg axle then sitting down with it where as if I was going to press it overhead I would normally continental clean it.

Need to do more, drill the patterns and get into the mindset that every rep of every set should be the same, not just switch on when it comes to the heavier stuff.

Suspected that would be the 'issue' as I'm lucky enough to have an experienced lifting coach to point this out to me.

To be honest, if you can crack 38" at 130kg, your problem is probably not actual power output. :)

Just need to get to the gym during lunch sometimes and do a tekkers session. Stick 60 on the bar and hammer technique for an hour or something.

I've had to reset my snatch and front squat techniques on occasion through doing the same.

It sucks, but in a twisted way, it's nice to have that uber-reps DOMS...
