The Acer ONE Thread

Sweeet, cant wait for mine!

Wonder if you guys can help here, I have reserved my One, but now I have gone onto the website and checked stock again and there none, its saying that due to high demands, its not available anymore. Is my reserved one still Ok ?

You would hope the fact you reserved one got your name on it, however the only way to be sure is to call the company in question.

It would entirely depend on whom you preordered with.

Generally it's a first-come-first-serve basis. So if they had 100 preorders available, and you were 99th you'll get yours.

Presumably they would only show "No available due to high demands" after they've had 100 preorders, so if your 101st in the list you'll have to wait.

Personally I'd be 80-90% sure you'll get yours, but if you want to be 100% sure give the company a ring.

Very shiny, the top looks nice, but the bezel makes it look a bit cheap & tacky. Maybe it looks better in the flesh.
what's the specs on these for £250? on the website it just throws me to a list of laptops when I click for more info.

For £250 you can pre-order the 1.6ghz Atom/1gb/120gb version of it.

£229 - 1.6ghz / 512mb / 8gb SSD / Linux

£229 - 1.6ghz / 512mb / 120gb HD / Linux

£249 - 1.6ghz / 1024mb / 120gb HD / Linux

£279 - 1.6ghz / 512mb / 120gb HD / XP Home

£299 - 1.6ghz / 1024mb / 120gb HD / XP Home

:)

Gutted... I went to the Land of the Purple Shirts at lunchtime to have a play on one, see if it was worth keeping my £199.99 pre-order (which has changed to August :() and they didn't have one.

I had a play with a 7" eeePC instead. Cute to look at, but rubbish to type on.

Just got back home with mine :)

In the "big computer shop" they had an Advent (Wind clone), Asus eee and Acer One all sat next to each other and honestly the Acer One looked the best. So any remaining doubts were swept away and I collected my One.

Just done a quick check and everything seems in order, no dead pixels or blemishes. The battery seems to come fully charged and thescreen looks bright and clear, I'm going to upgrade the memory to 1.5GB (I have a spare 1GB stick from a Macbook which i believe is the same type) I'm also going to need at least a 16GB SDHC card because there's only 3GB left!

I would eventually like to install UBuntu with compiz fusion but i think i'll need to wait for drivers. I'm just going to use Linux and free apps and games on this little machine, truth be told 90% of it's use will be browsing the internet while i'm at work ;)

It's a great machine and i'm happy with my purchase.

Here is the basic vid, nothing ground breaking but hopefully show you guys what happens at first turn on.

I will do proper vids and pics later, once I have had a tidy up.

Also FYI I got 2.5 hours out of the battery with wireless enabled, bit of surfing, some skype, messenger, iplayer etc. So no to bad really for the 3 Cell

This is going to sound really REALLY sad, but can you post a pic with your phone (looks like a Vario III) resting on the keyboard, so I can try and figure out how big the whole thing is?

I got mine too now !! just got home with it

boot time is good , ive already set it all up,installing updates etc..

Its much nicer in person, as said before the touch pad will need some getting used to, i keep finding my fingers move the bottom of the pad instead of the sides...

its quite sturdy too, nice stiff screen.

will post more once ive played about some more

and god some of these purple shirt people are stupid, they look like their high, he wasnt even friendly, I only ever go to the place if I really have too, its was worth it :D

btw, anyone else that has one, does your fan make a noise ? its quite irritating.

also, you know on windos when you adjust the size of a webpage by holding down control and scrolling, you can do it on here , but it doesnt update straight away, and when you adjust, its either too small or too big each time you scrol

There is a little fan noise sometimes, cant say it annoys me to much.

PS you mentioned the competitor, I am not mega up on the rules but I suggest you modify it just to be on the safe side.

the noise is like a ticking, sounds like it should not sound like that, specially if u put your head up close to it..

thanks for mentioning, I didnt even notice I typed it in.

Anybody know if there will be an SSD version with 1GB RAM?

Also, the rainforest place are saying 11 August for release.

Any place selling black 120Gb linux one without pricetag going into stupid territory yet?

I believe there is a 1GB Ram one available, but it will probably cost more than the it warrents. You put an additional 1GB in making it 1.5GB for £30, however still some discussions regarding what warrenty issues there are as the laptop has to be opened.

As for Black Aspire Ones, initial release is the Blue and White as far as I know, Black, Brown and Pink come later in the year.

Question about the RAM. how well does it run with linux (and maybe open office, firefox open) with 512MB? Is it worth buying the 1GB model, or is it easy to install another memory stick? does it take SO-DIMM?

Ta guys

One more question:) If anybody with one of these could post a video or just say how things like youtube and iPlayer run in fully maximised mode, that would be great. I would hope they can run iPlayer in full screen mode?
