The Acer ONE Thread

Looks like a new official website is up

http://www.acer.com/aspireone/

Looks good!

Blue, white pink and brown?

Brown? And no black?

Slightly disappointing. Still, the white should be OK.

EDIT:

Q. On the Aspire One 2G connectivity is stated as an 'optional'/'embedded' feature - how can it be upgraded from a 'non'-3G configuration at a later stage?
A. Embedded 3G is a manufacturing design. Upgrading to 3G from a non-3G model is possible via an external USB 3G module with appropriate Linux-compatible driver and connection application support that has been adequately tested with operating system.

Q. What is the maximum card size (memory storage) supported?
A. 8GB for both SD slots - left and right.
Erm, so when they say 3G module, they just mean a USB dongle? Who makes Linux drivers and software for that?

And what's that 8GB thing? The FAQ itself contradicts that bit later :/

The 3G part means that there are two versions available.

One with 3G connectivity built in (hence the 'embedded').

One without 3G connectivity.

The note on the dongle, means that the version without 3G built in can use an external USB dongle (hence the 'optional').

On the 8GB for SD cards, the FAQ doesn't contradict itself later?

It says that 8GB can be used in the left and right slots.

I would presume that a 16GB card would work, and that they just have extensively tested it. I doubt a 16GB SD card would cause the machine to throw a wobbly.

Apologies if this has already been covered, but what is the expandability like? I doubt I would put in a new HDD/SDD if I got one (looking at the 8GB SDD version) but if it only comes with 512mb RAM how easy is it to upgrade that? Which RAM do you need? Is it the same as the Eee (DDR2 Sodimm)?

soDIMM slot: Supports 512 MB/1 GB soDIMMs for total system memory of up to 1.5 GB (533Mhz)

To upgrade is abit of a faff, as you need to take the machine apart, remove keyboard and mobo. If you are competant with computers it shouldnt be an issue.

K. Does it void the warranty? How easy is it to screw up? I've built my own desktop but not too sure whether I should trust myself with something smaller and more fiddly!!!

EDIT: Also, when is it being released? I saw it on the purple shirt's website a while ago and it has now vanished, and it has been pushed back to the 7th on the website of the retailer from Jersey...

I think the warrenty issue is an ongoing debate, there is not a conclusive answer yet. The release date is also varying, it seems to be coming out in bits and pieces all over the world.

Haha fair enough...last but not least, how long is the 8GB SSD meant to last?

long enough for it not to be an issue!

Meaning... by the time it does fail a 8GB SSD would be worthless and you would have already upgraded to something larger or have a new netbook etc.

For those that care....

I upgraded the ram in my One to 1.5GB last night using this ram "Dane-Elec Premium Laptop Memory - SO-DIMM DDR2 667Mhz (PC2-5300) - 1GB" can confirm it works fine.

My Transcend 16GB Class 6 SDHC memory card came in the post this morning, I switched on the One Inserted the 16Gb card in to the left hand side and after a few seconds I was informed that "expansion was upgraded successfully" and i now have 17.1GB free. This is relevant because according to Acer the One only works with cards up to 8GB.

I also posted this info over at www.aspireoneuser.com where i'm known as pinchez :)

Cheers for the note on the compatible memory, I don't think we'll run into too many issues with that though.

Major thanks for the 16GB SD card note though, as that was something I (and a fair few others) had been getting a little worried about after Acer's FAQ only noting up to 8GB.

It's probably just a case that when they wrote the FAQ they had only tested up to 8GB extensively and didn't want to risk it.

I just really wish we'd see some hints of stock in regular etailers though, I'm dying to get my hands on one :(

hey dalepearson, whats the screen like? crispy? sharp? text easy to read?
