The Acer ONE Thread

I think it runs fine with the 512MB, but I will be upgrading the memory myself (it take SO-DIMM 533) but its still unclear if it can take an additional 1GB or 2GB, also you have to take the unit apart to get to the DIMM Module.

As for video, I think it plays fine, if a little jerky in full screen mode.
Give me 30 mins and I should have a video up for you.

Ah great... if it does play video I'd like to know how long the battery lasts when watching a movie.

Well it seems to last with the 3 Cell battery about 2.5 hours with normal use.
I didnt buy it to watch movies on so dont have particular plans to test that aspect, but I would imagine you need more battery power to manage a whole film.

Thanks a lot dale, that seemed decent enough to watch things now and again on iPlayer, I'm pretty sure I'll be getting one of these now :)

The SO-DIMM slot is on the underside of the mobo, but there is not slot on the underside of the case to access it. So you need to remove the underside screws, and that behind the battery. Then remove the keyboard, flip the mobo out, then add the memory module.

Hmmm doesn't look too hard, wondering whether it's worth just buying the 1 gig version or buying an additional memory module to get the 1.5 gb =/ Not sure 1.5gig memory will be that useful running a linux distro on this, or even if its worth the hassle pulling it apart

Thinking further on this, the version shipped with 1GB memory and 120GB HDD is about £50 more expensive. After adding the cost of the SO-DIMM module and an SD card for extra storage its not worth voiding the warranty by opening it or buying the extra memory and storage card.

I think it depends what you plan to do.
I dont plan on installing XP on it (but you never know), but the main reason for going for a solid state drive for me is, helps keep the weight down, faster boot speeds, less worry when being mobile with it.

Depends what you want really. I plan on adding another 1 or 2GB depending what is the max it can handle once confirmed, and a 16GB SD card and I am good to go.

I plan to run linux, but honestly the laptop isnt going to be a speed demon with a single core 1.6GHz cpu, and from what I read limited to 1.5GB RAM. Even with the SSD boot might be faster but with XP it certainly wont be speedy when being used.

I think its just the trade off. 8GB vs 120GB. Even having an 8gig SD card in the slot doesn't give much storage. Only reasons I can think of for going for the SSD is power consumption, but I'd like to see how long the battery lasts with the normal disk.

Comes down to whats needed really I think. I can't imagine a situation where I will be using it full whack for 3 hours without a socket. Plus the most intensive thing it will be used for is a portable networking terminal for connectiong to routers, switches etc. and office docs, net browsing. As its a normal 2.5" HDD it can be replaced easily aswell.

I ordered a 16GB SDHC Class 6 memory card (£33) and a 1GB Sodimm (£13) Last night so should be with me tomorrow.

I think the whole point of a UMPC/Netbook is portability and durability, a SSD is far more durable and weighs less than a Hard Drive. I'm also going to stick with Linux and free software on this little machine, If i need more power I already have a Macbook and a couple of PC's The One will mainly be used for surfing and messing about with while on the road and at work.

My combined storage will be 24GB which is ample for a Linux system and my needs, well at least till cheap 32GB SD cards come out ;)

I suppose it really depends on how easy the ram install is and whether it voids the warranty. it doesn't look difficult but I wouldn't want to mess it up.

Still questions on the warrenty issue, as in essence its a poor design, stating something can be upgraded, but not saying anything about voiding warrenty.

There are no warrenty void stickers or anything, so my plan is once I have messed around with it, and the newness has worn off I will upgrade the ram with a 1 or 2GB stick depending on whats the most it can handle.

FYI - Someone has tried a 2GB SO-DIMM stick of memory and the unit didnt function, so I think this confirms the max memory on the Aspire one at the moment is 1.5GB 512MB on board, and then an additional stick of 1GB Ram.
