The Acer ONE Thread

thanks for the reply dalepearson

hmm so is the mem that cames with the acer one onboard? and how many ram slot
do you get with the acer one?

from the vid it looks like 1 slot, so if i went for the 1gb ram version do i still get 1 slot
so i could upgrade to 2gb?

It isn't possibly to upgrade to exactly 2GB, because 512mb is soldered onto the motherboard, and you only have 1 expansion slot for adding new RAM.

I believe that the Linpus Linux OS cannot take more than 2GB, so if you add a 2GB module (giving you 2.5GB) you might run into some issues, or it may just not register the extra 512mb.

Ok few things
Yes had some issues getting the battery out, its a snug fit :)
Takes about 30 min to install and get up and running.

The max memory supported is 1.5GB, many people have tried putting in a 2Gb DIMM and the machine wont post.

Finally just for testing purposes I have installed XP Pro with SP3.
Seems to work well in my opinion with al drivers installed. Only issue is, that others have reported is a minimal freeze now and they when something is writing to the disk.

Its odd, but still very usable in my opinion.
However I willl be going back to some flavour of Linux as I want to be totally opensource on this machine.

I will post a video if you guys want later / tomorrow of a boot up with XP??

hmm so if i got a 1gb version does that mean its got 512mb built in
and 512mb in the spare slot?

Thats my understanding. This was one of my reasons for not wanting to wait for the 1Gb version as its cheaper to stick another 1Gb stick in. Even though you have the fiddly job of dismantling it.

Hi Dale, I presume you've stuck with the Linux OS over XP?

Do you honestly think a netbook like the One needs over 1GB for general use? Is there an obvious improvement in speed and stability going from 512mb to 1gb-plus ?

I'm tempted to get a 1GB stick for when mine arrives, but I'm doubting whether or not it actually needs it being based on a simple Linpus Linux design.

The only thing I could think it would help is perhaps better stability when watching videos (i.e. smoother videos) or quicker task switching.

Just wondering, what's your general feel... do you think it needs/wants at least 1GB?

osx running on one yet?

hi guys

tempted buy one is osx up and running yet as i just want one to mess about with

I am back on Linpus and all is good, but I might put the Ubuntu Remix on once it released.
As for the memory to be honest I wouldnt say it is very noticable, but things do seem a little smoother with it.
My main reason for the upgrade was 2 fold, one the memory is cheap, and also to see how hard it was and share the info with others.

There are a few people running 10.5.4 of OSX, however not everythig is working, such as wireless and sound.

Not somethig I am going to try myself as I have been trying to install OSX on my Dell D610 for research purposes but with no luck.

Like dalepearson said really, OSX can run on it but it certainly isn't worth the hassle. I'd say in a few weeks or months when this thing has had a proper mainstream release then we might see some better third party support and a few more people would have managed to get it to work correctly - but right now it isn't worth trying from what I can tell.

Has anyone tried dual booting XP and Linpus Linux on this yet?

I'd mainly use Linpus at home, but XP would be handy as I could use the One in work and when we're working out of office for Dreamweaver/Visual Basic etc...

I've got the Zif to CF adaptor and just waiting for my 16GB 300x CF card to turn up in the post (hopefully tomorrow) Then i'm going to do a full install of windows xp with sp3.

I have used Linpus for a couple of weeks now and to be honest i've found it far to limiting and there's so much more support and available software for windows. Windows also makes more sense than Linux in the way you manage files, install stuff etc. if you know what i mean. I also need good networking which is easy in windows but seems a struggle in Linpus.

Fingers crossed that the Compact Flash card is as fast in use as a normal Hard Drive!

Thinking of getting one of these but not totally sure, can anyone who already got one tell me a few things. Many thanks.

How does the screen perform outside in sunlight, this is one thing that I have not seen any reviews mention and for a portable like this it seems important.

Does it come with a way to reinstall the os if you wanted to? I would probably end up trying to install ubuntu on it, but not knowing much about linux would definatly need safeguard of being able to restore the factory os.

Mine hasn't arrived yet, so please don't quote me on either of these.

From what I've read the screen is LED back lit so you should be able to expect bright and vibrant colours inside and out (much like the Macbooks).

I'd also wager that the One will come with a whole host of recovery CD's and such to enable you to restore it back to it's factory settings if need be - probably by using an external DVD drive.

Just wondering whether this is specific to Linpus, as the things that you mention - managing files, installing software, configuring network - are much easier and more logical in Linux than Windows, at least for me.

Does Linpus do things in a particularly strange way, or is it just that you're unfamiliar with using Linux? Cheers.

I'd guess it was the latter.

Windows also makes more sense than Linux...

I've never delved deeply into Linux before, I've used it sparingly in the past but always enjoyed the experience. I don't think I've ever used it for more than a few days/weeks so I'm looking forward to using it again.

Regarding recovery of the Aspire One, it comes with a recovery CD that can be used via an external USB CD drive, or alternatively booted on another computer to create a bootable recovery USB drive.

Just got mine. They weren't out the front but a little detective work with mr purple shirt and turns out they had loadsa stock hidden in the stock room. Sexy.
