The Acer ONE Thread

So how would one of these do if I wanted to get one for the parents. Basically they are just after something to browse internet, check emails, view photos. Seems ideal.

I think out of the box it does exactly what you want, the only complication for the not so techy is installing additional things etc, so thats where you would come in :D

Seeing as lots of people have this now - what is the battery life _actually_ like?

It's become a sticking-point with me and all these netbooks, what's the point in such portability if you can't have a decent day's use out of it...

I've had over 2 hours use from mine.
There will be a larger battery available which should mroe than double the useable time, but it seems that this will cost >£60 when released. It might be available as a standard fitment.
I intend to get a universal external laptop battery (~£40 I think dalepearson mentions it earlier in this thread somewhere) which should give 4-5 hours additional time, for use on airplanes that don't have power sockets.

I get about 2 - 2.5 hours from mine, then an additional 5 hours give or take from my portable laptop battery pack.

The portable pack is a good idea to me, as its not Acer specific, so I can charge other things, phone, ipod etc, its not really to bulky and its light. Win Win for me.

picked mine up today. quite impressed so far. never used linux before and wondering a couple of things

1) How i can browse my home windows network.

2) How can I remote desktop into my vista machine

You'll probably get the answers to these over at one of the Aspire One forums that have started. I recommend one with a few familar names there that you should recognise. I won't post a link to it because of adverts.

Got to the Bank Today ... £250 missing ... oh Shizer! ... check account and turns out i had forgot to cancel the pre-order of my acer one , might as well keep it now when it comes tomorrow.

Nearest one is a good 45 minutes to an hour drive away for anywhere that would stock them unfortunately.

I'm not that desperate for it :p

If I find out some etailers have guaranteed stock @ £199 I'll take the plunge and cancel my PREorder

I just don't particularly want to cancel it, then find out the etailers were lying about stock. My preorder site gets them instock and I'm stuck again then :-/

The place I've ordered from has my version in white in stock (Linux/8GB SSD), just not the blue.

I'll wait a little longer seeing as though I could do with the money right now, if it's not here around the 7th or 10th of September though... **** them. That'll be over 2 months of waiting then :-/

Got mine.. does anyone know how u can get the messenger to work with msn as it just says it doesn't support that protocol. or could you link me to a acer one forum please.

EDIT - Sorted needed to do the latest update/patch.

loving the laptop. really struggling with the OS though

i've only ever used windows and it's doing my nut in.

email client doesn't synch fully with exchange.
no obvious way to connect to windows network

it's going to take time and patience to get to grips with this...not sure i have much of either tbh

Apparently your better off with the hard drive version if you want XP as the speed of the SSD in the aspire one is dire and XP performance is appauling. Performance of XP is much better on the Hard drive. So if You have the SSD Linux version I wouldnt waste your time installing XP. I add I havent seen this for myself but read several reports on this from respected people in the industry apparently its the write speed of the SSD that really lets it down. Think about it its the same price as the original 7" eee for much more tech they had to cut corners somewhere.

**EDITED TO ADD THE LINK**

You can see the vast difference here in the write times, showing how slow the SSD module is when writing data. While the read times are faster for the SSD, in some cases, the write times are 90% slower when compared to the traditional hard drive.
