********** The all new "Official" iPhone 4S thread - Keep all the iPhone 4S stuff in here **********

im at the screen where it says setup iphone. setup as new iphone, restore from icloud backup or restore from itunes back.

Do i choose the first? I take it I can gte back my apps, photos, contacts, calendar and notes later?

So basically, even though I received my 4S today, I should restore it via iTunes?

And then presumably re-install all my apps etc, and my data will sync back off iCloud.

Depends really,
Some people have had no issues at all.
Charge it up and see.

I set mine up "As new phone"

K, I have done this.

How do I get all my contacts, calendars, notes etc back on my phone. I can sync the apps but contacts and calendars are more important.

In itunes it says 'sync with outlook' google contacts, windows contacts...

I dont use any of those.

Does this mean I will have to run a full restore to get contacts back? :(

Just sign in with your apple id no? Aren't your contacts in the iCloud?

Cool, contacts and calendar updated. Notes arnt there for some reason but not too fussed

Is there any way of getting some pictures from my restore file (i didnt use photo stream)

edit - what is 'documents and data' in icloud settings? photos, notes, other?

Welcome to June 2010 ;)
You can cut it down - search Google, or request a micro sim from your provider.

;) I feel so behind now, I was shocked when I opened the Sim card tray!

Had a quick chat with T-Mobile and they said I could go in store to get it swapped, waved the costs too (I should think so too!).
Little disappointed I didn't research it properly as I cant activate the phone either now.

Just wanted to +1 re: iTunes restore.

After I downloaded iOS5 from Apple via iTunes and installed it onto my 4S it's like a different phone altogether. Was relatively pain free too seeing as all my apps were in iTunes anyway so was just the case of syncing it afterwards.

The difference in battery life is like night and day. Very happy now that I don't have to turn off all the features that make a smartphone "smart". :)

+2.

All locations services enabled. Posting results tomorrow re battery drain. :D

So everyone thinks there a problem with battery life if you "restore" your phone in iTunes.

When I got my 4S I did a fresh clean install. Even though it came with iOS5 preloaded onto it, I still did a fresh install and set it up as a new phone.

Cant say im impressed with the battery life.

Are you guys sure your not falling into a placebo effect?

Personally, I think no matter what you do, the issue is with iOS5 itself as it drains too much. Could be hidden tasks in the background. An update may solve it assuming Apple see it as an issue........

I'm not counting any chickens until I see how it compares to before. I know I was getting about 1.5 days standby and 4-5 hours usage, if it goes up then great, if not then no harm done really as the restore/reconfigure didn't take long.

Can photos (on camera roll) be extracted from an itunes backup file?

Thats all im missing now (apart from a few notes that are not needed anyway)

~4 hours usage
2 days 16 hours standby
25% remaining

Doesn't seem too bad to me. Standard settings + time zone thing disabled.
