********** The all new "Official" iPhone 4S thread - Keep all the iPhone 4S stuff in here **********

I have friends with iPhones who bought them and like them but they don't use them for anything other than calls and texts. They don't email because they don't care, it's a nice phone they can text from or use Facetime to talk to their kids. People who aren't techies just don't care. [/font]
^^^ Exactly.

For the very last time, we're on a forum frequented by geeks, of course WE care about hardware specs...and it's not bleeding edge is it? That's our point it's a good 6 months behind! And Apple push how good the hardware is etc. with their speeded up ads. I don't deny that IOS is good...I don't deny as a package the iPhone 4S is good...it's just not good enough to excite me to lock myself into a long contract for...

Don't buy it then. Brilliant. Good for you!

Like what exactly?

How about a home screen, how about widgets instead of pages of icons?

Icons somewhere are good to have to see all your apps, but really, the whole grid thing just looks dated now.

Also please correct me if I am wrong, but it still doesnt have turn by turn navigation? or is that internet guff :p

Feek/Robbo/Acid I do hear what your saying about faster this ,faster that, new voice recognition stuff. I love apple stuff , I like the design of my I mac and I love the smooth animations of switching screens on my IP4 and iPad 1.

But heres the but........ you both keep asking what else would you like spec wise/design wise?

My answer is Apple should be telling us what we want next , like the iPad they convinced a lot of people tablets were the way forward.

Apples designers/think tank could have thought of some unthought of ideas?

I basically had/have £500 ready to blow on a un needed upgrade but for the first time in a long time I just don't feel the need.

Not saying I'm correct but would like to hear your thoughts and to be honest try and convince me to be happy with apples latest offering:confused:

But there just isn't stuff out there ready to be included. That's not just an apple problem, that's a phone wide problem.

Hence my thread in phone section about hardware.

They have come up with a fair bit, but it is software related not hardware.

I'm with Feek. My dad's using a P4-based desktop I recommended about eight years ago. He's only recently started complaining because it won't play the videos he wants to watch. Doesn't care about the specs, does care that it isn't doing what he wants it to.

Maybe 95% of users couldn't care less about specs - it's what it does that is important, not what parts are inside the case. If the 5% that do care go elsewhere, then so be it. Apple aren't exactly having trouble shifting single core 16-month-old-tech iPhone4s.

Currently got an iPhone 4, don't feel the need to upgrade to the 4S, 4 does everything I need and I don't find it slow at al!

Not bothered about Android phones as I dont like the OS :)

what point?

Its already dated tech...Other phones have been doing the same for months

What don't you get?
Like what exactly? Its camera/sensor is probably the best in mobile devices to date. There's something other phones havn't been doing for months (good/acceptable low light performance).

If your still harping on about tech specs CPU wise, whats the point in including hardware that the end user will see no benefit from? IOS runs exceptionally smooth on the IP4 hardware, let alone the 4s. The spec got bumped just enough to make the Assistant stuff work well.
Whats wrong with that?

No, you're sort of right. We buy an Apple product for the seamless integration between their whole line of products which you clearly have not experienced thus commenting in a negative manner.

I have an iPhone because it fits right into my digital life seamlessly and effortlessly. I'd rather spend my time doing other things than tailoring the GUI of my phone or fiddling around with stupid settings that have no importance whatsoever.

Mohinder. Where art thou?

And I don't buy Apple because I believe other products are cheaper, have better or equivalent specs and suit my digital life just as seamlessly...
I can fiddle if I wish....but then you wouldn't know being locked into your Apple way eh? Each to their own son....argue away....

It has marginally better specs than your Galaxy S II, therefore it is better.

I would say they are fairly even, Galaxy S II has the faster CPU with Neon and 4.3" SAMOLED Plus screen.

iPhone 4S has a faster GPU and that 3.5" display.

So it's not even marginally better than a phone released 6 months ago, actually that's quite bad.

Then this part of the forum isn't for you.

Go ^^^^^ That'a way.

Also, how very patronising. Why do you think i'm on this forum? Do you think i have come to this forum out of love for apple? How very wrong you are old man. Shouldn't you be doing something better than sitting on a forum arguing with "Kids"?

Hang on, let me get this right.

Are you saying that people who buy mobile phones are more tech savvy, ie they know what CPU/GPU their devices have?

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha *beathe* hahahahahahahahahahaha

No. What I am saying is that mobile phone consumption is based on Length of contract and function.

If you ask the average man in the street what the CPU in his computer is, he'll probably glaze over and say "dunno, Intel inside?". Some might actually know, but most people won't.

I know we are talking phones

Ask anyone what CPU their mobile phone has got and they'll look at you as though you're an idiot because the average Joe probably doesn't even realise his phone has a CPU, never mind a GPU in a smartphone.

They will but they will know simple stuff like whether it does 1080p video etc

As for screen resolutions.

"Hey, Mr. Average man in the street, what's the screen resolution of your [insert smartphone name here]?"

"Er, dunno, three inches".

It's a phone. 99% of the population don't care.

Its size that counts

I have friends with iPhones who bought them and like them but they don't use them for anything other than calls and texts. They don't email because they don't care, it's a nice phone they can text from or use Facetime to talk to their kids. People who aren't techies just don't care.

These fall into badge wearers

Did you miss this?

For the last time, very few people care about 'bleeding edge' hardware.

Why is that so hard for you to understand? Why would Apple rush pointless hardware to market just for the sake of pleasing a handful of benchmark whores that probably prefer Android anyway?

Answer: they wouldn't.

BS post

Maybe for PC hardware not for phones

Actually I think you are wrong. Joe average doesn't care one iota about the technical specs. That is left for the e-peen brigade (us 1%) to willy wave and **** one another off. Man in the street will see new iphone, better camera, play better games, and it can be driven using voice commands - it will sell by the truckload. And when Steve Jobs is dead and buried in 6 months time, it will still be selling by the truckload. Will I upgrade my IP4 early? Not a chance. Will there be a queue of 1000 people outside the Apple Store in Brum on launch day, I guarantee it. Will there be a queue outside carphone warehouse when the next Samsung/HTC/Whatever Android phone launches? If there is it will be the World's shortest queue.

Current smartphone specs

But that's where I think you just can't get it. You're clearly a guy, like many on here, who has a good appreciation of technical specifications. But in the market of the iPhone, such knowledge and appreciation places you in the minority.

Apple has never been a company that proclaims to be the latest and greatest in the department of technical specifications - if the 'latest specs' are your thing then Apple just isn't the company that will satisfy your requirements across their product range. They do their (usually) annual update and hold tight for the year whilst the rest comfortably pack more tech-spec punch into their products.

When this is the case, you sort of learn to rightly or wrongly build your expectations within that Apple environment. Coming in here surprised at Apple for a dull update, which through your explanation means not including cutting edge hardware, just shows that you're not familiar with the way Apple operate business.

Of course there are people in here who will be saying they think it's the best thing since sliced bread, just like you will get people coming in to say it's a piece of you-know-what. It's easy to pick either extreme and go to town on it but I shouldn't be surprised because this literally happens every time Apple launch or update a product.

Let me think back over the years I've had an iPhone and see if I can remember any situations where I've been frustrated by things I couldn't do on it because of it being locked down.

I'm struggling.

Nope, can't think of one. I've always been able to do what I wanted.

Back at you - Argue away....

I agree don't get me wrong i'm happy to keep £500 in my back pocket but in the same breath was getting excited about some new design/real world feature/or some other thing!

Suppose in some weird way I should be happy IP4 is still good for at least another 12 months as IOS 5 runs good as gold

No one has an issue with this.
But why do people make up bs, to put apple down., most of it pure lies.

Different things suite different people. A lot of people want a complete Eco system this is where apple come into it's own and amazon in the us. And I expect amazon fire sales to absolutely decimate rival android tablets. Not because the hardware is better, itll be worse. But because it has the software and Eco system people want.

STOP IT RIGHT NOW !1!1!1

A problem which was never as severe as the media/trolls made it out to be. It was a complete non issue for us, although that could be down to the fact the UK as a whole is pretty well covered signal wise compared to the US.

bit small minded really, as a lot of states are bigger than the UK, let alone the rest of the world and now the media are trolls too...

so anyone who raised objections are trolls?

you know when Vista came out i said it was rubbish, then Windows7 came out and i spouted out how great it is. I'm neither a troll or a fanboy. i have my views.

If apple had jazzed up the phone with a facelift i would have been less critical. its just cheap from them, they know the iclones will be outside the store a week early

To sum up:

iPad 2 SoC (Standard 45nm dual cortex A9 SoC)
iPhone 4 chassis (old and very familiar design)
3.5" 960 x 640 Screen (still good but quite small these days)
Sony Exmor R camera module (already available in several phones but 1080p)
iOS 5 (already announced and fully detailed)
Voice activation (like facetime, new not new, can they make it work?)
64GB version (interesting?)
14.4Mbps capable (all new phones are)

Solid (and sensible) update from Apple but quite boring from a tech viewpint. Why didn't they announce this at WWDC?

(The new Photoshop Touch app was today's standout release :p)
