***THE BF4 BENCHMARKS THREAD***

Well ill be damned, i think ive found a solid solution to the cpu spike issue. The frame pacing bug is still there, but only with vsync on. I play with vsync off and its smooth I will do some more testing and then post up the fix in due course.

EDIT

Frame pacing remains spike free so long as the fps limit stays in place. With the fps cap removed cpu spikes are still present but not as bad as before.

EDIT 2

Ok spikes occur with frame pacing on or off. Solution for smooth gameplay is the fix i have coming + frame pacing on, vsync off, fps cap at 60, or frame pacing off, vsync on, fps cap at 60. I'm going with the latter, for now.

Whats the fix you have coming mate? Is it something we will have to download?

Thx for getting back.

Gpu 1 is 100% I run at 1920x1200 custom ultra. Gpu 2 scales quite well and reach 80% so crossfire works.

The thing is spending 250 on another cpu when I get 85-100fps mins with vsyn off is a lot of money. With vsyn on im constant 60fps so is dropping my cpu utilisation from 85%-90% down to 75% worth 250 quid........Still inbetween..

If I buy a chip via mail order and it does improve things IO can send it back right?

Just done a bit more testing and it is definitely a lot better than my i5. Normally on a 64 player server in the beta ( when I had my 2500k), minimums were like low 50's and in populated areas the framerate was more like 60 ish pushing to 70-80 in unpopulated bits. Now, with the i7 min I have seen is 65, populated areas (i.e. looking over the whole map with loads of people in front of you) are more like 70-80 and unpopulated bits are more like 90-110.

I am using 1080p Ultra preset (so 4xMSAA) and FOV at 90.

GPU usage is still only about 75-80% though so my graphics cards are still being bottlenecked. With the i5 though it was more like 60-70% with dips into the 50's.

Its up to you whether you want to get an i7 or not. It definitely improves things , but if you are happy with your framerate anyway then don't bother. It cost me £140 after the sale of my i5 and hopefully it will be a shrewd upgrade for next gen console ports that want 8 threads :p

Sorry Shanks, this fix won't please you one bit. :p

The fix, believe it or not is core parking. Despite it appearing that my cores were not parked, two of them were. What i did was follow this guide below.

It doesn't solve the bugs with BF4, the cpu spikes etc. But it makes it much better than it was previously.

Oh also I got a crash when the building came down just then :/. Although the server seemed to be half empty when it was full before when going back to battlelog and I asked on chat if other people crashed/disconnected and loads said yes so hopefully it was just a blip/server issue and not my computer.

One guy said he crashes everytime the building comes down!

Also, before it happened there were just two dudes in front of me running on the spot ( i.e. not going anywhere and seemingly stuck)

I put a simple step by step guide to disable the core parking properly a few pages back. No matter what people think (or how many times they say its fine or even worse off) it wants doing in the registry not just setting cpu performance to 100% in your power profile, thats like trusting afterburner to disable ulps, I havent seen ulps be properly disabled by any program yet i always go to the registry and set all instances of "enableulps" to 0

The problem with this game on 2 cards is simply 2 cards turn one of your cards off and play it, its getting less fps but way smoother feeling this is atleast the case for crossfire maybe not sli.

Anyway looking forward to my 290 arriving tomorrow and wont be going crossfire ever again.

See you on the battlefield (when it works!)

SLI is definitely working for me. It is very smooth and there is no way I would be averaging about 80fps with one 670!

I thought the game had really good crossfire scaling?

It does I can get over 80fps on 2 cards with ultra settings but get 40ish with one card however watching the frames counter is one thing actually playing the game is another 80p fps in crosfire feels worse than 30fps in single card the difference is massive, ive done all the settings and frame pacing and vsync and frame limiting, certainly frame pacing isnt helping this game but nothing gets it back to smooth like disabling the second card.

Edit# It should be noted I am playing this over 3 screens however its the same on one screen, i thought it was lag but just out of curiosity i diabled the second card and WHAM smooth and playable even though the fps is esentially half.

Nope :)

However, I do feel mantle will be more of a benefit to the lower specced set ups

I think the draw calls are what's limiting i5 performance with multi gpu. Once that limitation is removed all four cores won't be stuck at 100% usage. That should remove some of the bottleneck at least. I still think an i7 will be the better solution though.

Crossfire scaling is working fine. That is not the issue.

What is the issue. Frame times/frame pacing?

The issue is Battlefield 4. If you bring up the performance monitor in game you can see massive cpu spikes causing stuttering, glitches, bugs crashing and a whole host of other issues. A driver is not going to make any difference until dice patch the game.

I have some things you can try until the first patch comes out. This may help things in the mean time. :)

Try following this guide. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkfIFP0g2xY

Then try placing this user.cfg file into your game folder. http://www.sendspace.com/file/krah71

Then enable vsync and quit the game.

Then disable frame pacing via CCC.

How does it feel now?

I can see Mantle bringing around a 3% - 5% performance increase :p Massive disappointment all round.

If that 3-5% prevents the need to upgrade cpu and motherboard and increase my min fps, and all that for free I'll take it sir, thankyou very much.
When has team green ever given away free performance, never in truth.

Why is that a bold statement. The mantle API is supposed to use less system resource than Directx and should reduce cpu load. What doubt do you have about this tech?

I can doubt it as it's not even out yet.

As you said "mantle API is supposed to"

I'm a realist - when I see it - then I'll believe it.

Why do you have to turn it into RED v GREEN?
