*** The Official HTC One M8 Thread ***

does anyone use one of these without a case? I want to but it's just too slippy. It really has the worst combination of characteristics for grip. It's big, the back is rounded, it hasn't really got any edges, they are just curves. I wish there was some grip to the edges, either in texture or material.

I just find it odd that that most people list the build as one of thee reasons they bought it but then have to cover it up with rubber or plastic, me included.

Never had a case, never dropped the phone. It's definitely harder to keep a hold of than my Nexus 5 but not that difficult that I drop it.

I use it without a case and have dropped it a couple of times (admittedly, while intoxicated. I'm not a baffoon!). It's also fallen out of my pocket when sat down a few times which previous phones haven't. Overall it's got a few barely noticeable dints in the corners and some specs/minor chips on the back. I've stopped caring so much about having a pristine phone.

It's definitely a slippy phone, more so than the One S and imo that was bad!

Just upgraded from the one s and yes it is very slippery! Dropped it a few times when trying to put it on charge so have ordered a clear case with rubber sides for grip.

Lovely phone though, so much faster! :D

I used this guide to put GPE 4.4.4 on my rooted sense phone but I've still not got the OTA lollipop update yet, think I might just manually flash it, but I'd like to get OTA GPE updates.

Use the guide I linked above. Ensure your CID is GOOGL001. The update isn't fully released yet and only certain devices have got the OTA. It's easily flashed via the stock recovery.

Thanks My CID is GOOGL001 but I understand from the xda posts the roll out is incremental, so no going to do much for a few days, just a little frustrating as I have a stock recovery but not sure if its the correct version, if it matters, basically I'm trying to get GPE OTA updates on an m8 phone that was formerly sense!

Go here http://www.graffixnyc.com/m8.php and download "Build: 5.0.1 OTA Update Zip"

Can be and is best done downloaded directly to the device. Boot into the bootloader and choose "Recovery", then when it shows an android with a red cross hold the volume up button and tap the power button. You should get an option to update via the phones internal storage. Go to wherever the OTA is located (usually Downloads) select and flash the OTA.

This is what I did to get my phone running 5.0.1 and it's working fine.

EDIT: I used the guide I linked to convert to GPE from Sense, it worked fine and I also updated from 4.4.3 to 4.4.4 via OTA without issue. I just couldn't wait to get 5.0.1 running so flashed it myself.

You got a guide for that?

Also does the GPE conversion cause any issues with the SD Card or anything?

I used this guide: http://sakitechonline.com/fully-convert-your-htc-one-m8-to-google-play-edition-w-ota-updates/ with some amendments:

  • I used the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit rather than the Android SDK and associated bits to get ADB access... it's easier to set up and use IMO
  • I had to muck about to get USB debugging to work, needed the HTC Sync app for a bit but then got rid of it because it was annoying.
  • I had to use Sunshine to get S-OFF because Firewater doesn't work anymore. It cost £16.50 which is a bit  but fair enough given how technical software like that is to develop.
  • I used this RUU - Build: 5.0.1 LRX22C.H5 3.11.1700.5 - as it's the latest version: http://www.graffixnyc.com/m8.php

Broadly, from a stock and unmodified M8, the process is as follows:

  • Download and install HTC Drivers
  • Register/login to HTC Dev
  • Get token ID
  • Unlock bootloader
  • Flash recovery
  • Root
  • Run Sunshine
  • Flash GPE CID
  • Flash GPE RUU

My SD card kept crashing Spotify when I loaded it up for the first time, so I wiped it. Guessing that's because I had downloaded music tied to my account and it couldn't authenticate. I didn't have anything else on there so can't really say if it'd cause problems for anything else.

Overall, it was pretty easy but there were a few parts where I had to do some head-scratching.

Hi

I flashed mine to GPE back when I first got mine (a fair few pages back on here). I flashed it back to sense. Thinking I may flash to GPE again now.

Which download did you select Do I just need the rooted or non rooted. (I dont need the firmware or any other file.)

I used 5.0.1 Stock Non-Rooted GPE RUU. Go for the rooted if you want root access baked in.

The RUU.zip has all the necessary files baked into it, firmware, bootloader and stock recovery.

Another question someone asked was if you lose any files when you flash the RUU.zip, I believe everything gets wiped, so I'd run a backup if you need any files before you convert.

Follow this video, download the Lollipop RUU instead of the Kit Kat one from XDA.
Fairly simple to convert from Sense to GPE, it's the other way round that's a tiny bit more tricky.

Just got my over the air update to gpe 5.0.1!

Used the sakitec guide, to put kitkat gpe on, had to use sunshine to get S-off and changed CID to google.

Dolphin Browser is choppy, guess it's not been updated.

Adblock pro seems to not work either.
