What Audiobooks are you listening to ?

I'm currently half way through the second Thursday Murder Club book by Richard Osmond, thought the first book was hard to get into for the first hour, but I've loved every minute of both books since then.

Recently listened to all of the DCI Ryan books by LJ Ross, great series, and nice to see something set in my local Northumberland for a change.

Can anyone recommend some good detective audiobooks, either a series or standalone? Thanks.

Peter Robinson with DCI Banks.
Cynthia Harrod Eagles with DI Slider
David J Gatward with DCI Harry Grimm - on my list but not listened / read.
Faith Martin with DI Hillary Green
Peter James with Superintendent Roy Grace
Helen H Durrant with Detective Stephen Greco
Mark Billingham with DI Tom Thorne

The above are a mixture of both audio and eBooks, perhaps a few actual paperbacks.

I have focused on UK based detective books with that list.

Hope that helps.

That's perfect, thank you, I'll have a look through your list.

I do 90% audiobooks as I listen to them on my commute, rarely seem to have time to actually read these days.

With the arrival of Bobiverse book 5, I've started listening to the others again before getting to the new one.

Currently got an hour left on book 3.

I'm listening to 5 now and I've realised that as soon as I'm done I'm going to listen to them all again. They just tick all my boxes.
They are great scifi books.

I'm also working through the discworld books (the original releases, not the new multicast recordings) On Moving Pictures right now.

Once I'm done on both of these, I'm going to listen to the entirety of Everybody Loves Large Chests again.

That's a large list, but I might be interested in adding one or two more to my 'to do' list. If you had to pick the best to recommend, which would you go with? Thanks.

Maybe it was you that mentioned this previously, and I put it on my list, but reviews are very mixed. I guess some say it's a little too childish humour? I guess it just depends if you enjoy the style of the humour?

It really would be a tough choice. But, if pushed.....

Mark Billingham (1)
Peter Robinson (2)
Cynthia Harrod Eagles (2)
Helen H Durrant (3)
Peter James (4)
Faith Martin (5)
David J Gatward - on my list but not listened / read. - so unsure of rating

That absolutely does not mean the Faith Martin books are not good, they are. My wife is up to book 9 of the FM series and very much enjoys them. It is just a personal choice that could have flipped one way or the other. But the style of writing from Mark and Cynthia is particularly appealing. Perhaps, in that context, Cynthia having the edge over Peter Robinson, if you like an aspect of humour that is most appropriate to another wise quite dark theme when it comes to murder investigations. The PR books, adapted to 5 seasons of a TV series, are good, perhaps more formalised in procedure.

Just finished

it came up as a daily deal and sounded interesting.

Really good story and excellent narration.

Recommended!

After 8 months(ish) of listening to The Expeditionary Force series of books, I'm now listening to the Bobiverse series of books. Currently on book 2.
Can't quite get into the Bobiverse series. The individual books are easy to listen to but I never feel the need to rush to buy the next.

Loved Expeditionary Force despite its flaws and repetitiveness.

As I listened to all 17 books, plus the two .5's, on the trot I never had to worry about cliff hangers but after finishing Task Force Hammer I now have to wait for the cliff hanger to be resolved. Bah. Fortunately Craig Alanson is a bit of a prolific writer given book 1, Columbus Day, was released in 2016

Yes it did get a bit repetitive but it still gripped me more than enough to listen to all 19 books one after the other. That is in equal part to R.C. Brays narration and I will seeking out more audiobooks he's done.

The Bobiverse books are not in the same league for me but that's not to take away from them. I like the person reading them as that is a huge part of an audiobook for me, as I'm sure it is for the majority of people. Books I've liked the synopsis for I haven't bought as I didn't get on with the narrator from the sample.

I finished the wheel of time and its my all time favourite fantasy Story and audiobooks.

Just begun the Darth Bane SW trilogy. Not too bad so far.

Been listening to Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Ngl it's been a real slog, and would not recommend. Unlike other books of his which I really enjoyed like Children of Time, Dogs of War, Cage of Souls etc the pace is really slow, not bursting with ideas in the same way they are, and I never really got invested in any of the characters.

It's the kind of book I feel like I'd write if I was locked into a publishing deal and just had to churn something out.

However it seems to have pretty good reviews so this is apparently a minority opinion.

Just Finished "RoadKill" by Dennis E Tyalor, Narrated by Ray Porter. Was an easy listen, not to heavy and light hearted, If you like the Bobiverse you'll like this.
From the bestselling author of the Bobiverse series.

Jack Kernigan is having a bad day…a bad year…a bad life. After being booted out of MIT, he’s back in his Ohio hometown, working for the family business, facing a life of mediocrity. Then one day, out on a delivery, his truck hits…something. Something big…furry…invisible. And, it turns out, something not of this Earth.

Fate can play funny tricks. Which is why Jack suddenly finds himself the planet’s best hope to unravel a conspiracy of galactic proportions that could spell the end of the human race. All Jack and his best friends Natalie and Patrick have to defeat an alien threat is their wits, a lot of coffee, and a rather snippy A.I. named Sheldon. Plus, their own spaceship.

After all, if you’re going to rescue the world, the least you can get out of it is your own spaceship.

Just finished the 15th of the Omega force books, then did Bobiverse 5 (had already done the first 4) and now i'm struggling a bit. I have The Empyrean (dramatised version) which I listen to with my wife but my own choices are not going well. Currently trying the Battleship Leviathan Series.

The Black Fleet Trilogy (and then a few after those that follow the same story) are probably my favourite recent scfi space type books.
