What film did you watch last night?

Equilibrium. Excellent movie that is greatly underrated, also Dark City, one of the greatest movies ever made in my opinion.

Dark City is great. Equilibrium is a hackneyed mash up of The Matrix, 1984 and Brave New World, and the only decent scene in it is the hand to handgun combat between whatshisface and Father at the end of the film.

Equilibrium is just a shameless copy of Fahrenheit 451 with what randomly turned out to be in the long run famous cast (Bale was going though "indie" phase back then did Equilibrium, Reign of Fire and Laurel Canyon all in one year before Machinist).

It's not, it borrowed heavily on ideas from various books such as Bradburys F451, Orwells 1984 and other dystopian visions such as Huxleys Brave New World. But that doesn't make it a bad movie. The Matrix was essentially another imagining of Dark City, but that doesn't make it rubbish.

Watched:

Scopers - 5/10

The story line was generally OK but the pace seemed a little slow. Might be worth a watch if you access to something like Amazon Instant or Netflix where you don't have to pay specifically for it but I wouldn't pay to rent/buy it

I watched the first half of Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut. So far it's not as good as the original. There's scenes that aren't needed, which disrupt the pacing, and the music isn't as good. The extra bits aren't really adding anything so far. For me, a lot of the beauty of the theatrical cut was that it was a mystery what was going on, so unless the second half is going to blow my mind with some tremendous explanation of this, I do not think I will be converted.
Definitely stick to the original release with that one.

I still can't get over not seeing the theatrical until last year.

The Matrix was made at the same time as Dark City so while they may have a common root one is not derived from the other.

They were made some time apart, Dark City began life as far back as 1994 with production being just over a year ahead of The Matrix. In fact The Matrix filmed in the same studios and used some of Dark City's sets in its production. The Matrix borrowed it's basic premise from films like Dark City, Strange Days and Ghost in the Machine, but that doesn't make it a bad film...which was the point I was making, simply because a film is influenced by another doesn't make it inherently poor.

The Prestige WOW

I just gave this film a second viewing as I was quite confused the first time around, I very rarely give a movie 10/10 but seriously this film kept me in awe throughout the entire runtime, and especially the end... So many twists and turns right up to the last second!

Absolutely fantastic.

I went to see Dracula Untold tonight (a spur of the moment thing) mostly due to boredom. I was fully expecting it to be pretty awful but I got a pleasant surprise. Despite being quite predictable and with 90% of the supporting cast completely one dimensional at times, it entertained me. That might sound strange based on what I just wrote, but it did what it set out to do; provide an entertaining, not too deep stab at the overly done vampire genre with a brief nod at the history behind Vlad Tepes (a highly favourable and humanised portrayal that is ;))

It was refreshing to see vampires as monsters in league with the devil instead of a walking, talking human with a little blood lust and angst. It actually really reminded me of the Castlevania Lords of Shadow story. There was a touch of Ford Coppola's Dracula there with a definite Game of Thrones style setting and character archetype.

I was also left pleasantly surprised by the ending (No I'm not going to spoil it) and the huge build-up to a sequel; the premise of which actually really intrigues me. I found it much more enjoyable than the endless stream of blockbuster comic book spinoffs that never seem to be off the cinema: Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, Captain America etc. So yeah, if you're looking for an entertaining, slightly different action/horror film to go see with the girlfriend, I'd recommend it. If you're looking for something that pushes the boundaries, move along :p

Gone Girl - 9/10

A solid script and some great performances on this one. No need for Fincher to pull off crazy camera tricks with that story to work with.

Great!

Must have been a nightmare trying to come up with the trailer for this when they couldn't show most of the film.
