What film did you watch last night?

Incorrect. I think there are better films that do a better job of displaying degenerates of drug abuse. Losing your arm, submitting yourself to sex slave parties and receiving ECT treatment after being force fed in hospital is just over the top and unrealistic shock tactic. I thought that let it down. What we got was less of a decent film and more of a dramatic but stylised life skills video from school.

Fair enough. I did wonder, because I figured you would probably defend, say, Trainspotting instead.

I think my problem with the film was that it's supposed to be about addiction in many forms, but it feels very limited. You've got three people doing drugs and another person doing a different kind of drugs. It seemed a bit narrow.

Just got back from The Martian.

Superb movie. I enjoy any movie like this so Gravity, Interstellar and Moon are highly ranked in my top movies of all time list. But Martian is way higher up than them. Watney's dialogue was written for Matt Damon to a T, cannot imagine any other actor filling the same role.

Great jokes, great science, great SFX and a great cast.

You should mate, was surprised how well thought out it was. I didn't know this at the time but it was based from the book. They were going to change a major point with the story but it was too late in the production for it.

*****Careful The Martian movie spoilers below*****

They were going to add the possibility of finding natural water on the planet based on recent Mars discovery

Is a bit pointless because in the book
Watney has more than enough water and makes more via chemistry. It's a non-issue, just like power is after he digs up the nuclear pile.
It would have been too gimicky and sci-fi, and not in keeping with the rest of the book, so better that they didn't mess with that.

Blackfish- documentary I watched on Netflix about killer whales in captivity being aggressive. I'd heard good things, and it gets great reviews, but I found it uninteresting and a bit muddled tbh.

6/10

Also rewatched Eternal Sunshine for the first time in about 8 years. What more can I say other than I think it is one of the best films ever made. 10/10

Everest - 7.5 / 10

Pleasantly surprised, I was expecting a typical 'Hollywood action/disaster' movie and it was actually more a human interest story, based on true events, and didn't seem too overly dramatised.

Certainly got the women in the audience shedding a few tears :D so it managed to create a good empathy for the characters.

Always seems hilarious to me that people will watch any number of people get killed but get all worked up over animals. Get a grip.

Meh, doesn't effect me but I can understand it - people can really love animals, and they tend to be the innocent victim, yet people are a) ******** and b) tend to deserve it in movies and so it is fine. (You will often find those that hate seeing animals die also don't like seeing innocent people die in films either)

A few days that tell a story of different ends of the spectrum for me....

First I watched The Martian.

9/10 - Loved it, loved the humour, the visuals, the cast, story and acting. A top film imo.

Next, I watched Mad Max.

5/10 - Perhaps a controversial score given its popularity but just no, no no for me. Loved the original Mad Max but perhaps it was a film of its time. This modern take on it (as much as I think Tom Hardy is an excellent actor), just didnt do it for me. Story was weak (excuseable in an action film perhaps but even the action was a little too Bay-esque for my tastes), visuals I felt were sub par with some awful CGI effects in places. Had this weird editing style where sometimes the footage seemed to be sped up and the voices out of sync with the lip movements. Just really did nothing for me and if it wasnt for the brand and actors I would have been labelling it a poor low-budget film.

Nightcrawler - I was very impressed by Jake Gyllenhaal in this anti-hero thriller about a down on his luck, but willing to learn, thief who almost falls into the world of making and selling news footage. I had read comparisons with young De Niro and I think he lived up to them, fascinating and creepy too. 4/5

Fargo

Not watched this for some time and wanted to give it another go since watching the new TV series. Typically Coen brothers black comedy thriller, with usual shocking violence, choice score and fantastic casting. It's bleak but fascinating and the cross references in the TV series sub-plot are great.

8/10 - rightfully placed in the National Film Registry.

I was on a late flight the other night and I caught Life of Pi. Not a film I would usually be attracted to but I thought I might as well watch it as I had time to kill. Was a thoroughly enjoyable if not sad film. A story well told.

8/10

Maze Runner: Scorch Trials 7/10
Was alright, better than the first for sure. Enjoyed it more than the last Mockingbird thing and gave me a Half Life 2 vibe about it.

Turbo Kid. This clumsy homage to 1980s sci-fi fails on every level. As the old Turkish proverb says, 'You can polish a donkey ******* but you can't disguise the taste.'

4/10.

The Summit. Gruelling documentary about the 2008 K2 disaster, during which controversial Irish climber Gerard McDonnell abandoned other climbers in a failed attempt to save himself. 11 people died in a single day.

8/10.

Berkshire County. Predictable slasher with all the usual elements: bad acting, illogical behaviour, no tension, and plot holes galore.

3/10.

Saw - 7/10

Finally got around to watching this and was pleasantly surprised! I thought it was a slasher film, so my expectations were all out of whack....which is probably why I enjoyed it :) No, I won't be watching any of the sequels!
