What film did you watch last night?

I prefer Chronicles (7/10) to Pitch Black (6/10) with Riddick a poor imitation of PB (3/10).

I like the expanded universe and multiple locations but also prefer the characters in Chronicles, they seem less 2 dimensional than the throw-aways of PB (outside of Riddick and Johns).

Planning on watching Donnie Darko with the g/f - I've seen the original but not the Directors Cut.

So for a first time showing for the g/f - which version should I use?

The director's cut of Donnie Darko is one of the best examples I've seen of why directors need good editors. The extra stuff adds nothing to the film and disrupts the pacing. It makes for a considerably worse film. Some of the extra footage also looks bad, presumably because it didn't have the same level of post production done.

The Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 this is not.

Add me to the list that rates PB far above Chronicles. I tend to pretend that they're unrelated and that Vin Diesel's character is just an homage to the character in PB. I also ignore the priest & child.
I always thought that someone watched PB, said "I like that Riddick guy, lets make a whole film about him" and forgot EVERYTHING ELSE that made PB so good.

Yeah, Vin Diesel is cool and all, but he wasn't the be all and end all of Pitch Black. The film was at least as much about Fry as Riddick, but whatever. Vin Diesel. Woo.

Personally, I'd give Pitch Black a 7, Chronicles a 5 and Riddick a 3.

I'm not sure if you're saying that Pitch Black is better than the other two Riddick films, or just that it is your second favourite unknown horror film.

Anyway, PB is a great film, and up to now, I known of only Vonhelmet, a friend of mine and myself, that rate PB far above Chronicles. Everyone else seems to much prefer Chronicles.

I've never known anyone, beyond this forum, who thinks Chronicles is even close to PB.

In PB, Riddick was an awesome force of nature because he was a total badass. In chronicles it was because he was some poncy alien race. I kind of enjoyed chronicles, but hated what they did to Riddick, and the baddies sucked ass.

Setting aside my man love for vin diesel generally, and Riddick specifically, Chronicles is a terrible film, a 4/10. PB is a solid 7, though I personally like it more than that. Riddick would be a 5.

Started watching "A Million Ways to Die in the West", watched about 25 minutes of it and then turned it off - was just dull and didn't find any of it funny - incomplete rating, but would say 3/10.

Funnier than either Ted movie IMO but you have to be a fan of Seth's humour to really like it I guess.

Pressure. Capable deep sea disaster drama, let down somewhat by its safely predictable formula.

7/10.

Maze Runner: Scorch Trials. Incoherent narrative, numerous plot holes, poor acting, sloppy pacing, just plain boring. I literally fell asleep watching this. Several times.

2/10.

Safety Not Guaranteed. Charming addition to the popular and well established rom-com/sci-fi/time travel genre.

7/10.

^must see that at some point :p

We watched The Hundred Foot Journey. It was ok. Quite overly sentimental, I snoozed a bit through the middle. Not as good as I hoped although decent for a quiet Friday night wind-down. 5/10.

Also watched Safety Not Guaranteed recently (Again)

It's an easy 7/10 the second time around.

Love it, Kids and partner thought it was a bit crap until "that moment" in the film ;) And then it was all good!

Tomorrowland

Rubbish, don't bother. Poor start to finish, felt like a 'John Carter' moment all over again.

2/10

I watched this on Thursday...it's a great fun movie with a bit of depth to it...

You clearly don't have a clue comparing it to John Carter...

It's a good solid movie and better than most in the genre.

The last stand - decent enough action flick, starring Arnie as the sheriff of a quiet town. Decent car chase scenes and old school action. 7/10

Whiplash 8/10.

Really enjoyed it when I thought I wouldn't. The guy who played the conductor was excellent. Ended a little abruptly but I've no complaints, an excellent film.

J K Simmons? Yeah, he won the Oscar for best supporting actor for that. He's really good. It's a bit Full Metal Drumkit, but it really works. The final scene is brilliant. I liked the abrupt ending because it leaves you questioning what he's doing and why, in terms of what's good for him.
