What film did you watch last night?

Two American TV movies directed by people called Steven...

First up, Behind The Candelabra, made by Steven Soderbergh for hbo. Based on the memoir of Scott Thorson who had a lengthy relationship with Liberace. Quite interesting, and worth a watch, assuming you can cope with watching Matt Damon bumming Michael Douglas.

Second, Duel, which was Steven Spielberg's directorial debut. A businessman on a car journey is pursued by a truck driver seemingly intent on killing him. Pretty scary stuff.

i love Duel, its a solid 7.5/10

Creed.

Dear Lord this movie was awful, I was genuinely bored. The pacing was almost non existent and the script was later than a three legged dog with alzheimers, and truly laughable in the last half. The one early fight was awfully choreographed and about as exciting as a maths exam, and the end finale fight was completely underwhelming. Conlan looked out of shape and delivered some horrendous lines. Compared to the fight scenes in Rocky 1-4 it was a damp squib.

I just couldn't connect to the movie on any tangible level.

5/10

Just on the conlan bit - he does look out of shape, but that is tony bellews phsyique, he moved up to crusierweight and always looks abit chubby, i knew going in he want going to be ripped

Joy - 7/10

Enjoyed the story line and some of the performances, but in some scenes the acting felt a little off. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of her life when she was successful as well, it all seems to come to a sudden end within minutes.

The Lobster : brilliant and qwerky, Colin Farrell is brilliant in these sorts of films.
- 8/10

Hateful 8 : really really good
- 8/10

Spectre : ok Bond film, good action but even I saw the plot twists a mile off (which is rare for me!)
- 6/10

The Force Awakens - am I getting too old for Star Wars now? As an action film it was good, but too many references to the Star Wars of old, it's almost like JJ Abrams was scared of not letting the film stand by itself. Fingers crossed the next one will be better.
- 6/10

I do not understand how people can not highly rate The hateful Eight.

An absolutely superb bit of storey telling, the best story telling in many many years.

10/10, it's not a watch it again and again film, it's all about the story and that it delivers on.

The story telling is spot on, its just the story itself that lets it down.

Legend (2015)

TH did a great job of being both brothers but the film left me feeling I'd wasted a couple of hours. I didn't find it engaging or interesting. 5/10 for TH's twin roles.

Hateful Eight - 9/10

Characters and story were fantastic, it's probably one of the best films I've watched this decade, but I felt it was really let down by..

the random parts where the narrator comes in and spoonfeeds you details. The film did NOT need this. It was better to let the viewer digest everything themselves. We didn't need to be told the coffee was poisoned. It ruined the surprise of two characters dying. It also takes you out of the moment and ruins the atmosphere.

Not sure if it's a Tarantino thing, as I haven't seen many of his other films, but the narration really did take that last 1/10 off an otherwise perfect movie for me.

I agree. That was my only real issue with it, but it only happened once IIRC.

Wouldnt give the Hateful Eight more than a solid 7/10. Story was ok, characters were ok, was overall just about ok. Tarantino has done way better many times.

The thing about the Hateful 8 is I found it very flat, it was good, and consistent but I can't think of the stand out moments like I usually do with his other movies.

Excellent film making, interesting characters and sharp dialogue but I didn't enjoy as much as say Kill Bill.

i love Duel, its a solid 7.5/10

Duel is one of those films that gets better each time I watch it!

Spectre. I'm being generous with a 3. Worst bond film ever. Thoroughly bored from start to finish.

I think a 3 is a bit on the harsh side, don't get me wrong, I didn't rate it either but if you view it as an action flick it's not that bad!

As a Bond film it's an utter shambles - but then I'm really not keen on all these Daniel Craig Bond films being linked in terms of storyline - I much preferred the tried & tested ideology of the films being "stand-alone"

I don't think 3 is on the harsh side, it might be generous. The story was laughably poor, the action was a joke. It was close enough to a parody of a Bond film.

The opening instantly put me off the film, it was as ridiculously stupid as can be without being exciting at all. I mean it literally had a part where they just walked a bit while giving each other dirty looks. The rest of the film was boring as hell, interrogations where everyone just gives everything up, fights with barely any fighting, plot with next to no story, all painfully predictable.

It was like all the normal filler crap around the plot from any other Bond film stretched into a full film. Truly terrible film.
