What film did you watch last night?

Hmm, I must have watched a different Sicario. I was clock watching after about the first 30 mins. Guess it's just not my type of film. 4/10.

"Cinematography Roger Deakins"

that explains why it looks so good! :p
skyfall, jarhead, no country for old men, true grit all films I love the cinematography on

lol 12 oscar nominations for him with no wins
If Lubezki wins over Deakins again it will be a travesty :( Deakins is a god amongst the filmmaking community, it's shocking he hasn't won an Oscar yet. He was nominated twice in 2007 and still didn't win! The Assassination of Jesse James and No Country for Old Men were utterly beautiful.

Somebody agrees: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/entries/59df8b54-0dc9-4485-b969-88b953efac3e

Err...it's a Michael Bay film....I'm not sure how that equates to feeling 'more real' :D

Kermode's review said exactly the opposite, it was all (unsurprisingly) about the explosions and effects and little concentration on the characters or development.

I know what you are saying and that's what I went in expecting to see. There actually aren't that many explosions besides RPGs going off and one OTT bus blow up. Besides that it's mostly gunfire and fire.

John Wick

8/10

Enjoyed the film. Would recommend

I saw this at the cinema and thought it was good, purely because it was so different. It never really seemed to gain much traction then but now its been released it seems to be gathering momentum.

I've heard there will be another, perhaps exploring more of the characters in the hotel.

Whiplash.

Decided to check this out because of how highly rated it was on IMDB. Quite a good film, a bit tense at times. J.K. Simmon's acting was the standout performance of the film and I can see why he got an Oscar for this role.

Overall though I'd give the film a 7.5. I certainly don't agree with it being ranked the 44th best film of all time by IMDB.

Circle

Held captive and faced with their imminent executions, fifty strangers are forced to choose the one person among them who deserves to live.

6/10 interesting and different. Cube still beats it hands down.

The Box

Stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a couple who receive a box from a mysterious man played by Frank Langella who offers them one million dollars if they press the button sealed within the dome on top of the box. However, once the button has been pushed, someone, somewhere, will die.

I saw the trailer for this back when it was new (2009) and loved the premise. Remembered it recently and picked a copy up in CEX.

It was really quite good. A bit like a feature length Outer Limits, perhaps.

Enjoyed it. 7/10

Spotlight

Excellent film. Kept me interested all the way through. New little twists being opened up here and there. One of those films that gets you really interested in the subject and even though the film finished at gone 1am, I was up for another hour reading about it on the internet.
One of the priests was murdered in prison
A film that can quite easily turn people against religion.

Was shocked at the end when they said that new scandals had been uncovered in.....I was expecting about 4 or 5, not 5 pages worth
All the cast were great, but Ruffalo was excellent. His impassioned speech was an amazing piece of drama. 9/10 for me and worthy Oscar favourite.

Supremacy

Difficult watching this at some point. I'm not someone bothered by such things usually, but the unfettered racism from the main characters got to me somewhat. Quite tense all the way through. Turns out it again it is a true story. Some crazy **** happens in this world. Pretty good watch, sometimes unsettling. Nice to see Danny Glover. Looks so old now. 6/10.

Last night I watch "The Finest Hours" and tonight I saw "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi" (both at the cinema), both very different to each other but both based on true stories. 2 very good films.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, really good, engaged with the characters and story straight away. Michael Bay seems to have grown up a bit and stopped masturbating all over the screen. 8/10.

Spotlight.

Outstanding, acting, story are all brilliant.

Such a horrible horrible story though, doubt it actually changed anything though. But at least people are now actively trying, and not just 'turning a blind eye' to it all.

The Perfect Game (2009)

Film about baseball based on a true story of a 1957 little league team from Mexico that won the Championship.

Brilliant, yes some of the usual American dramatics but I still really enjoyed it. 8/10.

Heart of the Game (2005) I can't believe I waited so long to watch this movie. It's a documentary filmed over 7 years in a high school in America and follows the girls basketball team and their new coach. Sounds boring, but, it's very interesting and the ending is amazing.

The film just shows that sometimes real life is more strange and wonderful than any scriptwriter can imagine.

It's well worth watching. 8.5/10 (my rating is probably a bit higher than what others would give it as I really like basketball)

Hateful Eight – 7/10
I’m not a big fan of Tarantino - I never really ‘got’ any of his films, but I must confess this is probably the best of his films that I’ve seen to date.

Without spoiling the film, it’s a Western but unusually it is set in only a couple of scenes, mainly (almost entirely) within an old haberdashery store. It’s a hard film to describe as it has a western setting but doesn’t major on that but more so on post-American civil war racism, the North/South divide but also what unites the two sides.

Good cast, bizarre storyline and you will certainly end the film not even coming close to having a clue how you got to that point.

Not my type of film but certainly appreciate that some would like it.

Sicario – 3/10
I know this film has received some high praise on these forums but quite honestly I just didn’t get it. I stopped it after 20 minutes and then from sheer boredom I finished it a few days later.

It reminds me of Homeland and a few other films (I can’t stand Homeland). It didn’t entertain me, not one bit. I don’t see what the film was trying to achieve other than reinforce the image of a corrupt government running the drug flows.

I was left with the same sense of wasted time as I did after watching Zero-Dark-Thirty and only watched the film as I was off work ill and literally had nothing else to watch.

Spectre – 6.5/10
A solid bond film, nothing special, highly predictable but good stunts and everything you expect it to be, but not much more. Probably strongest in Daniel Craig Bond films after Casino Royale.

Fast and Furious 7 – 6.5/10
You really do get what you expect from the franchise but at last the franchise is now in a position for the next film to move on. Many storylines have now been wrapped up (not that people were particularly on edge to see a conclusion to them) but with the untimely death of Paul Walker (very good touch at the end) I think the franchise is free to explore different angles.

Dirty Granpa 4/10
Starts off really bad, but doses improve towards the end to achieve mediocrity.

Edit: Doesn't deserve a 5.

Don't fancy going back and quoting all the discussion on this but ignoring the fact that De Niro is lowering his standards a bit doing this type of film I actually found this pretty entertaining when I watched it on Tuesday.

I'd probably give it a 5.5/10. Definitely not a great movie in the grand scheme of things but absolutely hilarious in parts and I thought De Niro did a pretty good job. Everyone in the cinema was laughing out loud throughout which is a good sign to me.

If anyone is looking for a laugh for 90 minutes don't hesitate

This week I also watched:

Spectre
7/10 for me. Entertaining enough, found myself slightly losing interest in parts but enjoyable overall and worth the watch.

The Hateful Eight - 6/10.

It didn't sit right with me, I found it incredibly slow, the dialogue wasn't as clever as it thought it was and it went on for two 'chapters' too long.
Always enjoy watching Samuel L Jackson and Kurt Russell though, so it gets a point for them.

Ranks just above Jackie Brown for me.

Were you shocked like me.......

When they showed that huge list of church sex abuse scandals at the end? I looked close, one of them was Reading!

It was systemic in the Catholic Church. It shouldn't be surprising that it was round the corner.

It is to me mate. I knew the catholic church had their problems like this, but I never knew it was on such a scale as this. Really opened my eyes. I struggle to see how anyone can devote themselves to Catholicism after this.
