What film did you watch last night?

Spotlight

Very insidious story of obfuscation. Really shows the lengths the Catholic Church are willing to go to in order to maintain the status quo at the expense of victims it's supposed to support. Using the legal system to protect predatory paedophiles on a massive scale with no consideration for the victims of abuse. I was sickened at the lack of accountability that still exists and the wall of separation the institution has erected to protect it's self, without as yet any litigation or justice.

It didn't question why the priest at the door deemed it ok though

which was a missed opportunity

Calvary

I've seen it advertised a lot on Netflix and when I was walking to work I remember seeing posters for it, had a free evening last night and decided to give it a watch. Very glad I did. Beautifully shot, acted (great cast) and scripted. The pacing of the narrative was really nice, it felt like there was enough time to get to know the main characters. The weakest link was probably the priest's daughter, who felt very spiky and immature for her age.

Overall though a good film, and it's left some really harrowing thoughts and ideas with me.

8.5/10

That's a brilliant film.

This was on ITV2 last night (again) although hadn't properly watched it for ages and forgot that whats her name from Game of Thrones was in it. Definitely a visual feast and a cinematic epic but doesn't have a script that sets the world on fire. There is something disturbingly satisfying watching limbs getting lopped off in slow motion.

7/10

Deadpool

Bit disappointed with it to be honest. Felt like it was written by spotty teenagers with lots of innuendos forming the basis of most of the script.

Funny in places but really not my humour and little to no storyline.

Was really looking forward to seeing this - definite letdown IMO.

Trailers gave away the best parts of the film.

5/10

Tusk - Kevin Smith goes for a very low budget, slightly funny horror film and sort of succeeds. It certainly doesn't take itself seriously with some odd acting by an actor far too famous and good to be playing silly beggars in a film like this. Overall a bit of a disappointment, very little of the usual quick-fire Kevin Smith banter. Also looks like Haley Joel Osment tried to keep up with Kevin on a few eating binges. 3/5

Whiplash.

AS a drummer myself (have been playing nearly 20 years), I've always been intrigued by the film. Whilst jazz isn't my bag, and the sort of big piece orchestration type drumming doesn't interest me musically in the slightest I really felt quite warm to the film. I play in a band myself, but don't tend to pick up the sticks and rehearse until we've got a gig to play or songs to write, so seeing someone practicing every day makes me weep a bit, as I do miss it.

My career is as a animator/motion graphic designer/editor, and being an editor and drummer, I can only imagine how difficult for the editor of this film it was to try and piece together the correct shots with the right hits. And they don't manage it much if I'm honest, but I think only drummers would really notice that.

Back on topic, good performances from all involved, I don't feel like it needed any of the back story, girlfriend, family garbage in it. A brutal film, in many ways, the pushing of personal physical and mental limits, striving to perfection in the name of art. I liked it. But honestly, the very ending disappointed me, as I was genuinely hoping that they'd go back into the song rather than play out. No biggy though..

Deadpool 7.5 / 10

Hmm....well for starters, I don't know who they bribed for it's certificate but no way on earth should that have been 15....

It was slow to get going, in the respect that you have seen the whole start from the trailers, so the jokes/punchlines fell flat because you knew they were coming.

Overall I enjoyed it, though the one liners and 'breaking the fourth wall' were incessent and did break the flow of the film a bit too much (especially when making references to the studio, budgets, producers etc)

But I'd watch it again and enjoyed it more than the last few superhero movies. But I'd expect the imdb rating of 9/10 to drop once more votes come in.

Deadpool

Excellent! Laughed my **** off less than a minute into the movie and continued till the post credit scene! This had everything a Deadpool movie should have; crude language, very violent with lots of blood, very funny and breaking the fourth wall worked well.

I'll give it a solid 9/10 (there's always room for improvement, in anything).

Oh, and Morena Baccarin! Holy crap, she's hot ;)

Couldn't agree more.

I don't recall any film that gave away so much of the biggest action sequence of the film that this one did from the trailers.

As for the rating... just the language alone would push it to 18 IMO.

Hateful Eight... More like Hateful *****

I can't stand Tarantino anyway, but I was willing to give it a chance. However, this just simply perpetuates that hate I have for his awful films. And I thought the Revenant was slow...

Not exactly last night but yesterday i watched chasing mavericks. Ive watched a few documentarys about big wave surfing. Gotta say i enjoyed the film, despite it not being 100% acurate about Jay moriarity's life and upbringing and how he came to be one of the youngest to ever surf such big waves. I enjoyed it and couldnt believe how such a young guy put so much into an unfortunately short life. In the film he is shown to be such a decent down to earth guy, and upon further reading about him this seems to be true going by the people who knew him.
