What film did you watch last night?

Deadpool - 9/10, going again to watch it next week so score may drop after initial buzz wears off.

It's a breath of fresh air away from the typical dis-marvel cookie cutter movies. Yeah loads of it is given away from the trailers but there are so many more good moments throughout. Love the in-jokes, meta references and 4th wall style of the film.

All the way home, the wife and I were throwing parts back at each other, haven't been so buzzed about a movie for a long time. Guess it's because it lived up the hype, it delivered what was promised from the trailers and marketing.

Watched 45 Years last night....oh man it's a pretty brutal watch. Will make anyone think twice about marriage! Some incredibly subtle performances all around, but it makes for a tough watch.

Dads Army 6/10

Not as good as the TV show was, to be expected though, I think.

I think the casting and writing for Corporal Jones' parts were wayyyyy off the mark. It just didn't feel right at all and not once was he funny. To me, Jones was the best character and often the funniest in the tv show.

Watched jack reacher again last night.
If you haven't read the books it's a good film, if you have read the books. Then watch it knowing it's not jack reached. Then it's also good. 8/10

If you watch it, expecting jack reached it is pants. Basically stole the name and one case and changed everything else.

A very big fan of the Reacher series, but there is no way on earth I'm ever going to watch Tom Cruise portraying him.

I'm not a huge fan of Tom Cruise, so that's not a good starting point. Added to that the physical size Reacher is compared to Tom Cruise I just think he was a bad choice and puts me off.

Regarding further Reacher films, I think I might have heard Lee Child say during an interview that should there be more films made, he liked the idea of having a different actor play Reacher each time, which might not be a bad idea. Would certainly stop someone from becoming typecast.

Spotlight - 9/10
Script, direction and the acting are outstanding. The ensemble cast absolutely nail the people they are portraying.

Sensitively done despite the distasteful subject of the investigation. Based on a real story, so it would be unfair to ask for more from a procedural movie.

Bad Lieutenant (1992) 6/10.

Didn't really enjoy it all that much, dragged a little and there wasn't all that much to it. Harvey Keitel plays the part well, but found it was a bit over the top in the church scene and the ending at the bus stop just seemed a little implausible.

Finding someone who can do it who is the right size and a big enough name is going to be difficult though. The only few people I can think of are Chris Hemsworth (has the height, bulk not so much), Dwayne Johnson or perhaps Steven Lang but while he's on his 60's and I get the impression Reacher is in his 40's, he could do it. Just without the size and not a big enough name. As you said though, if you haven't read the books Cruise does a pretty good job I'd say. If you have, he still does a decent job and it's a decent enough film, he's just not Jack Reacher.

Oh I forgot. Alvin and the Chipmunks, Road Chip. Mildly amusing and I did chuckle a few times. As you can imagine though, not really a film for grownups. 5/10.

This week...

Black Sheep... Silly NZ comedy horror that was on the BBC iPlayer, about genetically modified sheep gone bad :D It was actually quite funny. Worth catching if its still available. 7/10

The Martian on 3D BD... An all round great piece of work, and one of last years best films. 9/10

Charlie Brown... Took my boys to see it at the cinema. My ten year old loved it, but most of it went over the five years old head (and of course he needed a mid picture poo  ) I found it quite a bore sadly; it worked as a five minute cartoon, but not as an hour and a half film... 4/10

Tree of Life BD... Finally dared to do this Terrence Malick masterpiece. I say masterpiece, but many would not agree, including my wife, who found it frustrating and boring at times. I must have been in the right mood, as I loved it. Yes, its strange (it included the birth of the universe and even dinosaurs) but I found it affecting, and certainly stunning to look at... 8/10

Just a few reviews from the past week or so:

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) - 8/10
An effective and mostly realistic action movie that plays out more like a light documentary than an all-out bombastic affair.
Strong action pieces and realistic fire fights, with good use of real-world military tactics and political problems.
The individuals are portrayed as humans rather than characters, and it is their little quirks and light-heartedness in the thick out of it that keeps the simple plot moving.
Although not always that exciting to watch, the rhythm of the conflicts and down-time effectively builds up tension.
Apart from being a bit too long and laying the emotional set pieces towards the end too thickly, it is a very good film.

Spotlight (2016) - 8/10
A very interesting film about the investigative journalism into a very sensitive and emotional subject matter.
It delivers the facts without holding back, and doesn’t unfairly victimise, accuse or idolise the people involved.
Strong acting and good pacing keep the drama and interest, but the ending feels a bit anticlimactic.

Goosebumps (2016) - 6/10
A fun and action packed adventure for children with plenty of good special effects and hectic chase scenes to keep the momentum flowing.
No scary or funny moments, but has a good, if formulaic plot, good characters, and good range of monsters.

Dad's Army (2016) - 5/10
A fitting tribute to the TV show with a well rounded plot, good use of additional characters as well as the old favourites, and is mildly amusing throughout.
However, it lacks a lot of the charm due to the more serious tone, change in characters and actors, and it doesn’t really capture the atmosphere of war time Britain.

Point Break (2016) - 2/10
The extreme sport stunts are superb to watch initially, as they are breath taking, beautiful and exciting.
However, they make up the majority of the film and subsequently lose their impact, especially once the poor editing and weak CGI scenes take over.
Shallow characters, poorly thought out action scenes, and a thin, weak plot coupled with mediocre acting results in a spectacle with no real reason.

Deadpool (2016) - 8/10
A different kind of superhero movie, with a very irreverent lead character who is excellently portrayed by Reynolds.
Although the plot is formulaic, the film is different enough in style to stand out and has plenty of well put together action scenes which are entertaining to watch.
Humorous throughout with lots of in-jokes, mature jokes, immature jokes and references to the Marvel franchise, but it’s not always as funny as it thinks it is.

Airplane - absolute classic from 1980! Voted the second funniest film ever, after Life of Brian, and I agree! So very silly. 5/5

It could well be. I saw it at the cinema, and though I was much too young to get some of the humour, I felt ill through laughing so much. It was a packed cinema, and you actually missed stuff due to the noise of laughter... I have not seen a film since get the reaction this did. It does seem very silly now, but still love it.
