Just a few reviews from the past week or so:
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) - 8/10
An effective and mostly realistic action movie that plays out more like a light documentary than an all-out bombastic affair.
Strong action pieces and realistic fire fights, with good use of real-world military tactics and political problems.
The individuals are portrayed as humans rather than characters, and it is their little quirks and light-heartedness in the thick out of it that keeps the simple plot moving.
Although not always that exciting to watch, the rhythm of the conflicts and down-time effectively builds up tension.
Apart from being a bit too long and laying the emotional set pieces towards the end too thickly, it is a very good film.
Spotlight (2016) - 8/10
A very interesting film about the investigative journalism into a very sensitive and emotional subject matter.
It delivers the facts without holding back, and doesn’t unfairly victimise, accuse or idolise the people involved.
Strong acting and good pacing keep the drama and interest, but the ending feels a bit anticlimactic.
Goosebumps (2016) - 6/10
A fun and action packed adventure for children with plenty of good special effects and hectic chase scenes to keep the momentum flowing.
No scary or funny moments, but has a good, if formulaic plot, good characters, and good range of monsters.
Dad's Army (2016) - 5/10
A fitting tribute to the TV show with a well rounded plot, good use of additional characters as well as the old favourites, and is mildly amusing throughout.
However, it lacks a lot of the charm due to the more serious tone, change in characters and actors, and it doesn’t really capture the atmosphere of war time Britain.
Point Break (2016) - 2/10
The extreme sport stunts are superb to watch initially, as they are breath taking, beautiful and exciting.
However, they make up the majority of the film and subsequently lose their impact, especially once the poor editing and weak CGI scenes take over.
Shallow characters, poorly thought out action scenes, and a thin, weak plot coupled with mediocre acting results in a spectacle with no real reason.
Deadpool (2016) - 8/10
A different kind of superhero movie, with a very irreverent lead character who is excellently portrayed by Reynolds.
Although the plot is formulaic, the film is different enough in style to stand out and has plenty of well put together action scenes which are entertaining to watch.
Humorous throughout with lots of in-jokes, mature jokes, immature jokes and references to the Marvel franchise, but it’s not always as funny as it thinks it is.
