What film did you watch last night?

The Hitman's Bodyguard: Not bad but I though I would enjoy this more than I did. Plenty of stunts, car chases and gun fights, but it boils down to Ryan Reynolds and Sam L Jackson playing the same characters they tend to default to. One's a hitman, one's a disgraced bodyguard, they have to get to the Hague to put Gary Oldman's evil despot behind bars, everyone's trying to kill them, yada, yada... The two of them are the core of the movie, and it could just as easily been any buddy movie with the two of them at the centre of it.

+1 agree , started well but the middle section & chases degenerated into slapstick, it is almost a parody of some of the Bourne chases,
change the music a bit, and a few words, and voila Bourne.
The introduction of the buddy's partners was clever, hommage to Mr&Mrs Smith

The Conjuring 2 - 6.5/10

Surprisingly good, especially for a horror sequel. I feared the worst when I read it was based in Britain, but it actually worked really well. Gave it a different feel to the usual US based horrors, but still had that Hollywood polish. I think also due to most of the actors being pretty decent, bar the odd corny accent here and there. The main young girl especially did a great job i thought.

Was based on the enfield hauntings, though they really exaggerated their involvement, in real life those 2 were there for a day at most, they apparently just appeared unannounced one day. Really went a bit over the top with the demonic nun and the crooked man thing. The nun originally looked like a generic demon, but was replaced at the last minute in post production. Both the nun and the crooked man thing are getting their own spin off movies.

Star Trek II - Wrath Of Khan, 7/10.

Some major continuity and credibility stretches: Chekhov never met Khan. Ceti Alpha 6 exploding would be more likely to move Ceti Alpha 5 closer to the star than pull out into the destroyed planet's orbit plus no debris field. The "Genesis" device absorbed the whole Mutaran nebula in about 5 seconds!

Also somewhat sobering to watch and realise the majority of the cast are dead, in fact I wound the missus up good and proper as the opening titles played reeling off the actors' status...

The Mummy: Not as bad as I was expecting. Tom is Tom, the two female leads are great and there are lots of action set pieces. Russell Crowe does a bit more than a cameo. I think the problem is that where action and a bit of humour works in the Mission Impossible films, action, humour and horror is a bit too much, and it never quite works because it's not been polished enough. Also the characters are not very fleshed out, so you don't really care much about them.

If you want to watch a mummy film, watch the first two Brendan Frasier/Rachel Weisz movies. Not only are the characters better, the scripts are better, the story more engaging, and the non-modern setting just fits the story better.

Transformers: The Last Knight....... 2/10

I CAN'T EVEN

Such a disasterous mess of nonsense and terribleness.
And that's coming from someone who loves a good brainless action explosion flick.

It (2017) 9/10.

I really enjoyed It and I shall watch the 1990 version this evening to see how they stack up.

I liked the fact they didn't go for a 12 certificate. The kids swear a lot, as kids are want to do when with their friends, and it was quite disturbing in places, though the most disturbing scenes for me did not involve the "horror" element of the film but a couple of scenes with Beverly (you'll know them when you see them).

As with all "horror" films these days jump scares are the cool thing and I managed to anticipate them all bar one that got me.

Thoroughly recommended.

The Last Scout 2017 1/0

I really love cheesy sci-fi but this was just terrible. The complete disregard for the 'sci' part ruined what could have been an enjoyable romp in space.

Annabelle: Creation. I kid you not..it's one of the best horror films i've seen in years, if not ever. Brilliant. So well shot and the two lead girl actresses (esp the blonde one) are incredible actors. 9/10. Loved it.

Just got back from seeing IT. Rock solid 9/10 for me. Brilliant film, Pennywise is superb, great story , very well done. Really got me in the mood for season 2 of Stranger Things and I cant wait for the 2nd IT film. Top film.

It (1990).

Hasn't aged well, especially having seen the excellent 2017 version this afternoon. It's one of those times I wish I hadn't bothered and just remembered it fondly.

X-Men Apocalypse: Not as bad as everyone says. As with any ensemble film, there's little time to detail every character, so it relies on having seen the previous films to know who is who. Unfortunately, with the number of movies taking place in the future, and movies that rewrite the history, even knowing what happened in previous film can still be confusing. The effects and big action set peices were good, as were Prof X and Magneto, but we saw too little of Psylocke (she didn't have the required English accent, but looked the part), and only a bit more of other characters such as young Storm and Quicksilver. A young Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Jean Grey (with a bit of Phoenix) had a bit more screen time, and Hugh Jackman does a cameo as Wolverine.

It's not bad, but is overstuffed with characters and a baddie that is not very charismatic, and should be godlike unbeatable, but they roll out the godlike Phoenix to deal with him, upping the ante and possibly painting themselves into a corner in the future. Not the worst X-men film, but should be seen as one in the series, rather than judged as a standalone, where it comes across as weaker and less coherent in story and characters.

I much prefer the older one. Really didn't like the new one after watching it at the IMAX. Didn't find it scary at all, never felt like anyone was in danger.

The most unsettling thing in the film was Beverley's home life.

The Limehouse Golem. I figured out who the killer was halfway through, more from cynicism at the way twist endings in films work, but it was still good and mysterious. The ending worked well, reminded me of Se7en.

You find the older one scary? I re-watched the older one just last month in preparation for the new one and the old one was almost camply comical now, was less scary that some stuff I see on Nickelodeon.

I rated it 9/10 because its a great story that was well told. Some of the kids I thought were very good for their ages (particularly the one who played Beverly and the one who played Ben) , was it scary? Nope..not at all, but to put that into context, the last film that scared me was 36 years ago , no horror film scares me now and hasnt done for decades. I agree that I knew that nobody was really in any danger but that was largely because I knew they werent because I already know the story and thus knew that none were in danger. The kids swearing...cant say I mind it really, kids do swear a lot, especially when its just them amongst themselves, I dont think it was intended to be shocking or funny, it was just a portrayal of how kids are.

I felt it was paced very well, wasnt simply a gorefest (a la Saw or Hostel) , had decent enough SFX, covered enough backstory of the 7 primary characters and set the foundations nicely for the 2nd film.

Wonder Woman...... yeah, that was awful! :(

Terrible plot, baaaaad casting (with the exception of WW herself mind!), terrible CGI and one of the slowest super hero films to date!

I was really hoping for a darker, grittier WW to run up to Justice League but it was just a First Avenger rehash in the style of a bad period drama!

Nah I never found the old one scary either but far more enjoyable. Thought this one dragged out, found myself bored halfway.

IT (2017) - 9/10

A modern masterpiece of storytelling with a great 80’s setting, atmosphere and use of musical pieces.

Strong acting and characters who develop through the great story of giving in to and overcoming their fears.

Plenty of creepy horror, iconic and shocking scenes, and a good balance of frights based on real-world and imaginary threats.

Top special effects and disturbing imagery which taps into the character’s emotions and themes of the time.
