What film did you watch last night?

The Butterfly Effect

I've seen it before, but my mum hadn't, so we both sat down to watch it. Unfortunately, this time it was the "DVD" edit, rather than the Director's Cut, which I'd seen previously, as I found out, not only has a much different ending, from some searching today, it's actually got other bits missing too. Rather disappointed it wasn't the Director's Cut we saw yesterday.

A great film, in which the lead character (Ashton Kutcher, who excels in this serious role, compared to his usual comedy roles) finds that he can relive earlier parts of his life, which shows how changing one thing leads to other things changing, and the effect that this can eventually have.

DEFINITELY watch the Director's Cut - the ending is much better, and finalises the overall message in the film - the other ending feels out of place (especially as I'd seen the Director's Cut first, so was expecting that ending)

Normal DVD release: 8/10
Director's Cut - 9/10

I saw Inception. I wish I didn't believe all the glowing reviews for this film as it was a total waste of money. The concept of the film was good but the way it was put together was rubbish. It could have and should have been so much better. The ending was so predictable. The film tries to be so clever that it ends up outsmarting itself.

2/10

Punch-Drunk Love

I actually enjoyed this movie, even though it seemed to hate itself. Sandler in a very different role to what we are probably used to (Theres Something About Mary etc). Film starts quite slowly before picking up interest.

7/10

12 Angry Men: 6/10

Was watching this as part of the IMDB top 250 list but didn't really think it belonged up there with the other films in the top 10. I was annoyed that the viewer is never shown any of the court proceedings and so can't make their own mind up about the boy before the evidence is re-examined in the jury room, coloured by the prejudices of the people composing the jury. I think I would have preferred the film more if the viewer had been involved in the film almost as a thirteenth jury member, allowing them to decide on their own verdict and then have it confirmed or questioned as the drama unfolds. I also felt the film came across as being pro-American with the whole 'we're American, haven't we got such a great judicial system, aren't we amazing' vibe.

The film is still a decent watch but I felt it could have been a lot better (or maybe I just didn't get it) and didn't have anywhere near the same effect that the other films in the top 10 so far have had on me.

It's not about the court case, to include that would distract from the meaning. It's more about how a man(the public) think. It could be any case, it's about how the jurors act, are prejudiced for different reasons and how one man sticking to whats right can change things.

Bit of a crap explanation there by myself, just think characterisation of each juror and forget about the case.

Die Hard.

A classic, enough said really.

No Country for Old Men.

I watched this when it first came out and really enjoyed it, having watched it again i enjoyed it even more as i picked up all the very "Cohen" bits of the film. The scene with the coin in the shop is excellent.

"Up in the air" I think it was called (the gfs choice). It was OK I guess, could have been a lot better. Kind of reminded me of Thank-you for smoking, but nowhere near as good.

Yeah and unfortunately I didn't like it, with the cast I thought I'd love some silly fun but it just failed to produce any laughs out of me for some mysterious reason.

Fell asleep trying to watch Minority Report. Still, I know it's a solid 8/10 movie - very entertaining, and interesting to see some of the tech 'used' in that film become reality in recently months!
