What film did you watch last night?

Looks amazing, what's the projector/screen?
Optoma HD141X Full HD/3D. It's pretty old but does the job. I am looking at the Optoma Cinemax P2 next, 4K ultra short throw laser projector. You can literally put it right next to the wall and get a huge screen.

I don't currently use a screen, it's being projected onto my white bedroom wall.

Just started watching GotG Holiday Special

Black Adam. 3/10

Why is it that nearly every director on DC have absolutely no idea how to introduce newish characters to audiences.

It's just here's this guy. Gets powers.

Then boom, here's an advanced city.
Boom here's the justice society, Dr fate etc.

It's even bordering on drifting into deadpool comedy at times.

Then only good thing to come out of this is probably more individual superman films.

Prey - 9/10

Controversial? I went into it with no expectations...I was a little disappointed with the opening when they showed the predator so early, alarms bells started ringing that this was going be another Marvel-style fan-service circlejerk.....but rapidly improved.

9/10 too much? Well I think 'simple' action movies are just as worthy of praise as clever arty stuff. Prey is excellent, the cast and performances are spot on, the cinematography is great, some really good shots. Most importantly for an action film the pacing is perfect, it never feels drawn out, it keeps things moving at a good rate and has changes of direction with the French turning up etc.

The only thing I would change personally, is the language. It felt really jarring these Comanche natives talking modern American English. There isn't a lot of dialogue in the film and I think it would have been much improved had they spoken Comanche with subtitles. The French spoke French!

Overall, I think it is on a par with the original movie, it's quite different in many ways, but just as good. We have such a dearth of good quality sci-fi these days, all the money seems to go boring-as-**** superhero drivel.

On disney+ there is actually an option to watch in Comanche with subtitles.

Brazil (1985)

I absolutely loved this. Dark, hilarious, absurd... but beyond everything else just aesthetically gorgeous? I don't think I've seen any other film with such attention to detail on... well, everything.

It doesn't seem to get a mention that often anywhere, but really worth checking out.

Also, definitely one of my favourite Robert De Niro roles :D

Stalker https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/

I've tried to watch this several times before, but always found myself either switching it off or falling asleep.

Of course, I didn't expect it to resemble the video games in almost any way, though the book it took influence from, Roadside Picnic, I still have yet to read.

This time I managed to finish watching it, and I'm finally glad to be able to tick off my list, though perhaps not for the right reasons.

All in all, I thought the music and lingering camera shots, for the most part, were good, though the lengthy conversations I found to be a bit too much.

It's a very slow film that, at least for me, under delivers, and the few interesting moments that are included occur mostly all too little/late in the movie.

The ending scene was quite good, though.

My all time favorite. There's no other film like it even in Gilliams own catalogue. The performances, the themes, the practical effects are all astounding and that ending...

Would highly recommend "The Battle of Brazil" documentary which can be found on YouTube now. A few things are detailed in that which boggle the mind, it's a wonder the film ever got made.

Enola Holmes 2

Apparently the original was a film I remembered enjoying more than I did at the time, but even so this was a sequel that didn't feel equal to the first movie in the series. Cavill was excellent, and there was a decent amount of clever moments but the film never felt like it trusted its audience so we were given multiple short flashbacks in case you weren't paying attention to what went before. Even more than the first film it felt like YA aimed at teenage girls - nothing wrong with that, but I'm no teenage girl - and didn't seem as clever or consistent. I'm also not sure how I feel about the portrayal of the real historical figures alongside the fictional characters. Still, despite the criticism, I enjoyed it overall even if I'm not hankering for a third installment.

6/10.
