What film did you watch last night?

Enola Holmes 2

Apparently the original was a film I remembered enjoying more than I did at the time, but even so this was a sequel that didn't feel equal to the first movie in the series. Cavill was excellent, and there was a decent amount of clever moments but the film never felt like it trusted its audience so we were given multiple short flashbacks in case you weren't paying attention to what went before. Even more than the first film it felt like YA aimed at teenage girls - nothing wrong with that, but I'm no teenage girl - and didn't seem as clever or consistent. I'm also not sure how I feel about the portrayal of the real historical figures alongside the fictional characters. Still, despite the criticism, I enjoyed it overall even if I'm not hankering for a third installment.

6/10.

Never managed to get past the first 10-15 minutes myself. I keep meaning to go back skip through it see if there are bits I enjoy. Admittedly I'm not the target audience but a shame.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. 8/10
I think your post put it onto my watch list. About 30 minutes in I'm thinking 'This seems a little familiar...'. According to Trackt I have seen it before, near release, but tbh I couldn't really remember what happens, so I got to enjoy it again :) I would go 7/10.

I can easily see myself watching this again in a year or so.

I need to now look into this "Trakt" and see if it's worth the effort. Every now and then I rewatch a film on Netflix by accident. Quite annoying as most Netflix films are not that great :D

It's quite low effort and tbh it's better for keeping track of TV shows and what you need to watch next. There is now a Trakt Android app in beta, but you're a little better off using 'TV Show Tracker' and linking it in to Trakr

Violent Night (2022) - 7/10

A good old fashioned action movie with a charismatic villain, cliché henchmen and a down on his luck hero portrayed perfectly by Harbour.

There’s nothing truly original about it and the moral message was a bit labored and a bit mixed if you think about it, but it was entertaining and good fun even though the middle did drag on a bit.

The action scenes were good, although there could have been greater use of Christmas paraphernalia, and there was the right amount of humour, gore, violence and festive cheer.

Smile - 6/10

I thought it was ok. I just wish it was a bit more violent and gory.

The actress was good, just looked her up to see what else she's done and turns out that she is Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwicks daughter ... Sosie Bacon.

Might give this a watch tonight. Cheers

Troll (Norwegian, subtitled)

Another Norwegian Troll-themed movie on Netflix naturally draws comparison to Trolljegeren but that does no credit to either film. This is a by-the-numbers monster flick, utterly clichéd from start to end and with few surprises up its sleeve, but it's told with a heart, warmth, and humour lacking from comparable Hollywood big budget monster movies. The cast are all excellent and it does a great job of creating rich distinctive characters with a few lines of dialogue. Pleasingly it's not given in to the bloated run times of so many modern films and it feels so much better paced through its 1h 40 run time as a result. The plot is roughly as watertight as you'd expect from this kind of movie and you won't be discussing it down the pub for weeks, but there's nothing wrong with films made simply as entertaining diversions for a couple of hours.

Pour yourself a cold one, open the Pringles, and enjoy the ride 8/10.

On this tonight, cheers! Want to see Troll too.

Troll 6/10
After reading lots of glowing reviews I was expecting big things from this. Eh, was ok I guess. Bit simplistic, nice visuals. Worth a watch.

Troll hunter was better.

Don't Worry Darling (2022) - 7/10

A film about idealism and control which tries to fit too much in and as such, comes across as a bit of a mish-mash.

The story and the big reveal was good but overall, not that spectacular – thematically it covers well-trodden ground, but the presentation was excellent, teasing out the mystery and being unsettling through all the little oddities.

Pugh’s performance was outstanding, captivating in every scene she was in and the idyllic setting looked the part, complimented by the music of the era.

I really enjoyed it, although it was a bit too weird at times.
Pretty much my thoughts, a solid 7.
