What film did you watch last night?

Most of it was fine, other than what Arnie had been up to

Fitting curtains!?

I found it underwhelming, possibly just because it felt a very tired franchise at this point (after all the other ‘sequels’).

I actually think I liked it the least out of all of them. It was so… flat.

Well there we are. Terminator Dark Fate; I’ll give it 8/10. Started off a bit ropey but once Linda Hamilton came in, it picked up and Arnie was the cherry on the cake. Without them two, it would have been a damp squib

MI7 (Mission Impossible - Dead reckoning Part One)

I found it incredibly predictable and safe, with very little of the inventiveness in the gadgets or fun espionage of the previous films.
Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Pt 1 - 7/10

I was going to give it 8/10 until I read this comment and thought 'yeah, I guess it was a little copy + paste in some ways'. Still, it was an enjoyable movie with some good action.

The Killer (2023) - 4/10

Very slow at the start as it explains the character’s ideology, but felt more like an audio book with pictures than an assassin movie.

The professional and procedural format and multi-staged journey is watchable and although it builds up tension, it often fails to deliver on it.

Standard betrayal plot, minimal characterization and an anticlimactic ending. The fight scene was good and injected some much needed action, but overall, the film felt a bit pointless.

Black Phone - nice take on the genre. 6/10

Where the crawdads sing - my pick of the 2. Had a touch of sweetness to the tone vs some evils in the world. Also second time I've seen the lead actress on screen and it's 2 good ones in a row. Must be handy at picking the right scripts. Solid 7/10

Dumb Money - 6½/10

Was a reasonable watch, but...
Dumb Money, The Big Short for the Gen z in the audience, i quite enjoyed this, told the story of the whole r/wallstreetbets, Gamestop shenanigans reasonably well, without going into to much depth to lose those who might not know to much about the stock market. I'd rather they had but it is clear the film is going for the light touch approach. Hopefully we may see a more involved film in the future.
...quite honestly I feel like they needed to do at least a little explaining. It felt like it jumped from 'I like this stock' to 'I have $11m in stock' literally within seconds. I wondered if I dozed off and woke up 20 minutes later in the movie...

Oppenheimer 5/10

Meh. This film was way overhyped. 3 hours was so unnecessary it should have been a max of 2 hours. I also don't get why they decided to constantly jump around back and forth through the timelines a bad editing idea. It just added confusion to the story they were trying to tell. The last hour was quite a bore and really dragged on. I did enjoy the science aspects, recruiting a team and bomb making aspects so the film started well but overall I was bored by the end. They should have taken more note of the similar story 'The Imitation Game' to learn how to do a film like this justice. Pitty.

i so wanted it to be really good but left dissapointed.

Palm springs - watched it before but this tike with son. I like it though feel on muktiple watch that the pacing was off like it rushed the end. Has got some good moments

Plane (2023)

This is the recently promoted Gerard Butler film on Amazon Prime.

Not outright bad, but underdeveloped compared to most theatrical releases. The set up is fine but the film seems keen to wrap up without really any character development making it a slightly hollow and ‘distant’ experience.

Definitely an impressive (and painful looking) ‘fist fight / scrabble’ in it though, oof… plus some epic rifle power.

5/10

Oh dear. Only made it to the first 2 hours so not sure I can score it as that's an hour missed.
Great actor and director (Midsommar is genius imo) but this all felt a bit depressing and repetitive. There are some great dream-like scenes on offer but it was all too taxing for this viewer.
Be interested to hear if anyone else rates it? On what I saw it's a 4/10.

^ @turbot1984 Beau is Afraid is 9/10 for me… 8/10 for the viewing experience which is borderline an ordeal, but 10/10 in terms of leaving an impression. Was on my mind for weeks afterwards.

Absolute chaos. Simultaneously one of the funniest and most frightening films ever made… bleaker than the bleakest bleak thing that has ever bleaked. But bleaker.

My current runner up for film of the year.

What’s your film of the year?

What’s your film of the year?

Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish.

It sounds ridiculous but, really :o

Funny, dark, relatable, lots of heart, great characters (including one of the best villains in anything ever), far more depth than you’d expect from your typical family film. Oh and beautifully animated too.

An absolutely treat :)

(I’ve never seen the first film - not needed)

Actually saw the first one the other day, cracking film as well!

Undecided as to what mines been, I’ll need to have a look back at what I’ve seen this year.

Nice I should probably check it out, although from I gather they are in different ballparks (with the second film being far superior) which has put me off slightly! Deffo check out The Last Wish if you haven’t already :)

Third place for me is Oppenheimer, then Barbie. Have seen 14 films in the cinema this year which is definitely a ‘personal best’.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Tom Cruise and sci-fi… all of his films in this genre are pretty good IMO, or are at least unique and memorable. Typically slick and well polished too.

I hadn’t seen this since release and it ticked all of the above boxes. It’s an impressive looking film for sure, with lots of busy action. The main gimmick of him repeating the same day is great and they do quite a bit with it.

It never loses bombast but the very final sections feel more generic…

… when he loses the power to repeat the same day the stakes are raised but at the same time it all becomes a bit vanilla.

Bonus shout out for one of the most inappropriate and jarring music choices ever for the end credits crawl: John Newman - Love Me Again. Uh..?!

A good popcorn watch - 7/10
