What film did you watch last night?

No, it’s really not ‘man hating’. Anyone that thinks that would have a very narrow sense of perception, IMO. For example, even though there is certainly a heavier emphasis on the impact of the patriarchy on women in the latter part of the film (which is fine - it’s allowed to say its piece), it should be obvious to most people that the messaging is also sympathetic to men who also struggle to find their way.

With that said, for context I should add that I had absolutely zero issues with the ‘all female Ghostbusters’. I know that some people took issue with the male secretary, but I thought that was just a riff on the very commonplace age old ‘trope’ of sexy / dumb ‘blonde female’ secretaries. My jimmies were thoroughly unrusselled by such lighthearted bantz. Overall though the film was nothing special - fun but not demanding of a rewatch.

So as with all things, your mileage may vary!

I haven’t seen PYW - will add it to the watch list, ta :)
Ah cool, I'll watch it then, as I love Gosling and Margot is always amazing, and brilliant when it comes to humour :)

I never personally watched the all female Ghostbusters, I just heard people bang on and on about how it's just a revenge dig at hating men etc etc...

OMG, trust me PYW, is savage, it's funny as well in places, Carey is an absolute beast trust me, I cannot give anything away, just watch it, don't even watch a trailer - that's how I did it, and it blew my mind how good it was, I'd say it's Carey's best work. I've seen it 3 times IIRC now, and it's just so good. From the first scene you will be hooked trust me.
Let me know when you've watched it, it's definitely something a missus/wife would appreciate you watching with them, as it's very empowering for women and deals with some serious issues.

Die Hard, a classic Christmas film. Tonight is Training Day also on 4K blu-ray, interesting to see what job they've done on the transfer. Also got Giant (1956) to watch when I have 3hr 21mins free ;)
Yeah Die Hard is THE best Christmas film ever, fact. Training Day, offt, what I'd give to watch that for the first time again, SO good even Denz thinks it's his best character he's ever played.

Once you get old enough every film is watched for the first time, I can't wait
"Every day is a new day"

There's that bit in a film I forget the name of (ironic huh) and they're speaking to this nice old man in a diner, and the old man says how basically people have been wrongly accusing him of walking around half naked in a robe and shouting at children and saying he has dimentia, to which he says "I'm not an idiot, I know what's going on" etc etc, and how he's happy in life and fully aware, then the people talking to him are like "well that's all that matters, what's the problem then?" and the old man says "the problem is sometimes I don't know what I'm doing and walk around half naked shouting at children!"

It's acted out so well and very seriously but it's dark humour yet he's not saying it to be a joke, it's priceless! I'm pretty sure it's Leaves Of Grass with Edward Norton, but I could be wrong.

Oh and @Troezar IIRC when he's said that to them, the shot pans out and he's only in his pants and a robe IIRC  It's very cleverly shot so not to give it away whilst he's telling the story lmao!
I'll look it up. Always like a good comedy, hard to find these days. Recently watched National Lampoons Vacation on 4K(I'm slowly getting the old favourites on disc), still makes me laugh and I must have seen it quite a few times now.

Yeah definitely, it might not be from that film. But regardless Leaves Of Grass is hilarious so worth watching anyway.

OMG NLV is that the one, where the diner girl brings over the food to their station wagon and Chevy drops it down the side of the car hahahaha!

EDIT:
YES!!!!

Wonka (2023) - 9/10

A splendidly wonderful heartfelt film filled with entertaining set pieces and family friendly humour.

It’s a good story told through a great cast of characters, all of whom are well acted, and has a number of spectacular settings and silly jokes.

There’s plenty of magic, extravagant musical numbers and catchy songs and the pacing and tone is consistently good.

A slight case of too many villains, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and just like a good chocolate bar, it left me craving more.

Now before I recommend this, IMHO it has a lower review rating due to people expecting it to be taken/not appreciating/knowing it's entirely meant to be a slow burn thriller...

Edge Of Darkness 7.5/10

Mel Gibson is a homicide detective investigating the murder of his activist daughter, he uncovers a corporate cover-up and government conspiracy that attracts an agent (Ray Winstone) tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

TLDR found this when looking for new Mel stuff, this was very different to anything he's ever done and not just some Taken action flick, it's very very good. Ray Winstone is as usual spot on, whoever thought of putting these two in a film together, with a plot like this, is a genius.

This is a long slow burn film, but trust me it is very decent, and some of Mel's best acting. It could be the most serious thing he's ever done tbf, I love him in action/older stuff but this was such a breathe of fresh air/different, I love it when people do something out of their usual wheel house.

Father Stu 7.5/10

Mark Walhberg plays Father Stuart Long, a boxer-turned-priest who inspired countless people during his journey from self-destruction to redemption - this is hilarious but will properly catch you off guard and get you right in the feels, it's also a true story.
Mel Gibson plays his nasty abusive father, this is a hell of a film.

Without spoiling anything, just watch this, I watched it thinking it was just a comedy, this will properly catch you out when you think you know what's going on. Very impressed with this, seen it a few times.

The casting is outstanding.

Terminator 2 8/10
Is to terminator as aliens is to alien. A different film, more amped up, but no less great.

This is how strong female characters should be done. Linda Hamilton is excellent. She looks bad ass, can look after herself, yet has flaws and vulnerability.

Arnie is great just being Arnie. Edward Furlong starts off as bratty and obnoxious, but becomes more likeable as the film progresses. There are comedic moments but the film never devolves into marvel levels of stupidity.

The CGI looks a little dated naturally, but it was never overused. Most of the film was done with practical effects.

Watching films like this makes me sad for what we have now.

Please please please watch the original BBC short series of the same name. Vastly superior than Gibson's remake.

Yeah I heard it was decent. Mentioned this as, for a hollywood film it's decent, and Ray Winstone + Mel Gibson turns out to be a very decent combination.
I'm also mainly recommending this as a decent newer Mel movie, as I'm sure many people of age still like him, and would like to see him in something very different to the usual action stuff.
Also Ray Winstone's character is VERY very good, and he as usual knocks it out of the park!
