What film did you watch last night?

The Long Good Friday (1980)

I can see why it was such a highly rated film when it came out. But I don't think it's aged particularly well, especially if it's your first time of watching it. There's some interesting and original camera work, especially during the abattoir scenes and it was fun spotting all the actors that have made appearances in British TV shows and soaps.

6/10

Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In - what an amazing movie. One of the best HK movies i have watched in a long time. Was lucky enough to watch this on the big screen as a once off showing and it was brillant. How they have recreated the Kowloon Wall City is both ingenious and incredible capturing the dark, dingy dangerous atmosphere. Cant believe such a heavy populated place ever existed with some appalling conditions. It was a real death trap but this movie captures the unity and community of the residents that stayed there despite the crime, dangers and challenges. What a great cast with solid performances from Raymond Lam, Louis Koo as well as Sammo Hung. Some parts were a extremely fetched but still had some amazing choreography. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 9/10 for me.

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) - 8/10
A solid film throughout with strong acting, a strong story and great use of the setting and special effects.

Whilst the plot roughly plays out as expected, it successfully ratchets up the tension with a good number of action sequences and the destroyed cityscape is shocking and humbling.

There’s a little too much of showing the creatures this time around and the supporting cast don’t get much development, but the cat added some lightheartedness and the ending was heartfelt.

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire (2024)

Never been much of a Ghostbusters fan, even though I'm old enough to remember how massive the original films were.

This is easily the weakest of the four films, having never seen the all female remake. So much so that I nodded off at one point.

It started fairly well, but never really got going again until the final confrontation and even that was all a bit lame and predictable.

It doesn't help that, the comedy elements are very weak and not particularly funny. Bill Murray was completely wasted and arrived far too late in to the film. The mini Puffs were mildly amusing and can see them getting a spin off of some kind, even though they are just Gremlin/Minion rip offs.

Not bad at all, though I kind of wasn't expecting the ending to turn out the way it did.

Aside from Jack Nicholas, there are a number of other well-known actors are in this one, though most have smaller roles:
e.g. Sam Shepherd, Helen Mirren, Costas Mandylor, Vanessa Redgrave, Mickey Rourke, Benicio Del Toro, Aaron Eckhart, Harry Dean Stanton… and so on.

I think the ending makes the film stand out and deserves credit for not bowing to what most films would've done, which would be to give the audience a conclusive or happy ending.

Civil War 4 or 5 out 10. Don't think it is particularly bad but it is caught between being gritty and a semi-action film. It's billed as a "thriller" film, but it isn't one. Dunst's performance was 10/10 though.

Kinds of Kindness (2024) - 5/10

Three weird stories that don’t really amount to anything worthwhile. They are entertaining in their own way with some dark humour and great acting performances, but I was waiting for the twist or hook that would make it all make sense. A little disturbing at times and interestingly made, but mostly disappointing.

saw bikeriders a few nights ago at cinema city, Norwich
it was an alright movie that showcases a bike gang in the middle1960s' the inspiration was taken from a guy who hung out with the gang for years taking photos and recording interviews with various people related to the gang and published a book about it, the gangs name was changed for the movie, I think because there is a modern gang that sounds a lot the same, and they did not want to get the gangs mixed up.
they did well at not using too much 60s' cheesy music
Tom hardy was good in it, and Austin Butler was very watchable, esp for my mum who has a bit of a crush on him! the main female in the movie is played byJodie Comer, who I could develope a crush on myself , if only for her accent, though I'm sure that she put it on a bit, cwoffeee anyone?
, the only bad thing was it reminded me that I cannot ride my motorbike any more, which really sucks ass, I miss bikeriding, a lot! but I still enjoyed the movie anyway,
all in all, a solid 7/10
