What film did you watch last night?

Just finished Godzilla Minus One. It was awesome, a proper band together to achieve a common goal flick. There's some depth to characters and some predictable 'surprises' but they aren't totally cringe worthy, they feel deserved rewards.

Godzilla looks, sounds and acts like a creature of the sea. No morals or motive beyond stomping and throwing ****.

I'd watch this again. 7/10.

Civil War

Didn't really know what to make of it. I kept asking myself for the entire film, why is this happening? There was no back story at all.......from what I remember!

Also having shot film quite a bit, the kid didn't have a motor drive on her camera, so there's no way she got those question action sequences. And she was popping off shots left right and centre. You only get 35 shots per roll! Little gripes.

6/10 too.

Bike Riders - Really enjoyed that, the time flew by. Jodie Comer was great, Tom Hardy was Tom Hardy, and Austin Butler is quickly getting typecast as 'smouldering bloke', but was perfectly fine. I think the supporting cast made it for me.

Rewatched highwaymen Costner and Harrelson (sp ?). Decent film, and the actually clips of bonnie and clyde and the car at the end, shows how revered they were at the time.

Under Paris (2024) - 5/10
A French shark horror film of two halves. The underwater scenes were great and overall the film looked impressive, especially the promotional shots of Paris.

The plot was mostly good, starting off with a strong ecological message, but gets ridiculously over the top towards the end. Whilst this makes it more entertaining and fun, it kind of undermines the point it was trying to make by turning the shark from a victim into a villain.

Plenty of human drama, good acting and special effects, but not much tension.

Trigger Warning (2024) - 3/10

A tired premise with a slow and clichéd plot, weak acting and weak writing.

There’s some action scenes and the hand to hand fights were entertaining, but there wasn’t anywhere near enough of them and the special effects looked cheap.

Mostly boring and with glaring plot holes, it struggled to hold my interest.

I knew it wasn't going to be great with the opening scene. After that sniper shot the rest of the team just vanishes until everything is all over. With predicable results. Then it's Unprofessionalism 101.
That left me really shaking my head.
JA still looks amazing though.

Oldboy (2013) - 8.5/10

Still in shock...Film felt quite rushed in the final segments but that was some ending. Need to watch the Korean one now. Yes I know I should have viewed it the other way round!

In the end as Marie drives away in a car, she presses the belly of a buddha (I believe it was a buddha) that is mounted on her car dashboard. Does this point to the fact that she is pregnant or am I looking into this too deep?

I’ve never seen the us remake, but for me the original is the best revenge film ever made.

In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2024) - 8/10

Whilst the story isn’t overly original, it’s a solid thriller in an authentic 1970’s setting.

The Irish location is great with plenty of beautiful rural countryside and a strong sense of culture, but the accents can be difficult to make out at times.

Superb performance from Neeson as the tired and conflicted hitman and the support cast with well-rounded traits and the few action scenes are done well without detracting from the drama.

The Ice Road (2021) - 4/10

A ‘so bad it’s good’ disaster movie, but only just.

Whilst the concept of having a rag-tag crew of big rig drivers embark on a noble mission against time and the extremes of nature to save those in peril holds some merit, the actual plot comes across as silly and very unrealistic.

Combine this with the incredulous action scenes, cheap CGI, dodgy editing, weak dialogue, wooden acting and some incredibly daft death scenes, and you have an entertaining but bad film.

Had it been more cheesy and ridiculous or more serious and gritty it could have been great; as it is, it’s just another B-movie.

I haven't watched many Neeson films since Taken, which was a cult classic. Only to mean all his films since have been in similar vein, to inevitably decline ala Seagal/Van Damme stuff.

I was pleasantly surprised as Land of Saints was good as it took a slightly different take on the usual Neeson film and is all the better for it.

Hit Man (2024) - 9/10

A comical and entertaining documentary on the reality of being (or not being) a hitman.

Powell is superb in his various roles and fits in perfectly with the quirky and humorous presentation style.

The plot is interesting with good pacing and as it unravels, you can’t help but sympathise with those involved.

The romance is sweet, naughty and a little bit raunchy and the philosophy elements are relevant and work well.

I quite enjoy a Liam Neeson movie from time to time and I thought this was a pretty good one.

Kept me guessing how the ending might turn out, and as it happens, I was wrong about that.

Good film, easy to settle into. Kerry Condon played her part very well, a despicable character at times.
