What film did you watch last night?

The Skin I Live In - 8/10

Spanish film with Antonio Banderas, without giving away too much, Banderas is a brilliant plastic surgeon who has been through grief and as such has very loose and twisted morals. Very much a horror/thriller with a realisation half way through that made the film and what we had seen before take on a much more disturbing tone :p

Really enjoyed it.

And forgot

All That Mayhem - 8/10

Recommended on here in last couple of pages, really well done and tragic and much more of a biography than specifically a skateboard documentary.

Suicide Squad - 6/10. About 2-3 of those points are simply because I like seeing any new comic material in movie format....and Margot Robbie.

The film for the most part is a compilation of trailers and is barely a movie buuut it does have good scenes throughout, just not connected in almost anyway. The script was very average, Harley Quinn was fine but the lines were mostly cringey. Plus a bunch of accents all over the place.

I did actually find Leto's Joker pretty good and did like the gangster take on it. I also didn't mind his side story simply as it served a specific purpose despite only really having 10-15 minutes of time but again, was just trailer cut scenes again.

I thought BvS Ultimate Cut was about a 6/7 as well. Problem with DC is they are adequate but not hitting the standards that break good comic book movies away into being able to stand as just good movies.

Jason Bourne - 6/10

It was fine, I will even say a couple of the action scenes were exceptionally well done. All the acting was fine but it was all just unecessary and tagged on to the original Bourne trilogy. At least Legacy did try something completely different ie making the whole film essentially about a drug addict trying to get his fix but it tried. This wanted to keep hooked on to the original trilogy and play it safe.

I think the only way the next Bourne if there is one will be a box office hit is if they bring Damon and Renner together, I like Renner, i'd watch that but I now doubt the ability to string it forward especially as Damon had held off for so long due to Greengrass and a decent story, and this was it.

Had a bit of a Shyamalan marathon as I hadn't seen these before and despite his failing reputation I realised I had actually enjoyed most of his movies (I think Unbreakable is up there with the truly great films).

Lady in the Water - 6.5/10

This is supposed to be pretty much his worst but honestly I was entertained, I was aware it was a bit of a fairy tale story which it was but a bit more adult. I think a lot of people took too much offence with Shyamalan casting himself in THAT role which dropped the ratings somewhat but Giamatti, Dallas-Howard and most of the supporting cast were great. The story is ok and it definitely has one of the most out there endings I think i've seen from his films but its a pleasant watch if you don't mind the 'dreamy' state the film is shot in.

The Visit - 6/10

Damnit, POV camera footage, do not like in general but thought I would persevere as this was fairly well received. It was ok, with a few really well setup scenes and the ending whilst predictable defnitely adds a sense of urgency. Still it was a bit more by the numbers than I thought. Good acting all round but I hate rap so the little kid rapping somewhat frequently irritated the hell out of me :p

Also

That Awkward Moment - 5/10

Fancied a lighthearted comedy, this wasn't quite as light hearted as i'd hoped but still had some laugh out loud moments. Mainly watched as like every member of the cast but didn't really think they were used to their full potential.

Harley and the Davidson's - 8/10

3 Part Mini-series about the creation of Harley Davidson. Not a film but each part is 1 hour 30 mins. If anyone has any interest in motorbikes its well worth a watch, even if your not a lot of interesting stuff about business rivalry and HD smart move during WW1 that gained them massive traction. Well acted although:
the final part is set some years later with all of the actors having 'aged' via makeup which looks pretty terrible on the actor playing Harley who I think is only early 20's :p

Give it a go.

Fundamentals of Caring - 7/10 fairly generic story but witty script and very well cast.

Kickboxer Vengeance - 3/10 Dave Bautista did his role of looking intimidating well and as mentioned above the main woman is very attractive (although if only 'semi' for the guy above I have no idea what he considers really attractive as the woman is stunning).

I don't think it was a terrible movie, probably a 4/10 maybe 5 at a push due to the effects being top notch but I just did not find it funny and found Leslie Jones and to a lesser extent Kate McKinnon (despite her character seeming to be quite popular) just annoying whenever they were on screen.

Everything in between was ok but just so generic and over the top. I don't think i've seen any of Paul Feig's work apart from Spy which I did enjoy but it was R rated so allowed to let loose with the swearing and Jason Staham and definitely not Bridesmaid's which I think is rated as his best but I can't imagine i'd like them if they were so poorly written. I did find the line 'Aint no ******* gonna hunt no ghosts' funny but it turns out that was from a YouTube comment :(

Hemsworth just seemed mentally disabled.

I don't rate the original as the greatest thing of all time but the script was very clever and witty with ageing effects. This has fantastic effects and a terrible generic, poorly written script. Men/Women have nowt to do with it.

Also I watched The Babadook 8/10 - Very effective, not a monster movie as such but people looking for that will get what they want. Great acting from the woman playing the mother, the kid was annoying but the role was supposed to be like that. Great imagery, script and soundtrack. Feeling of unease and unsettled throughout most which I rate far higher than jump scares which I think this maybe had 1-2 but actually used correctly.

Prometheus - 5/10

Have seen it before but not for a couple of years. Honestly the whole film is plot hole followed by plot hole. It made as much logical sense as Sharknado but with a huge budget.

Gave it 5 for effects, acting and just generally love the universe. AvP 1 and 2 were more entertaining and less frustrating for me.

Westworld- 1973

:D

Me too for the first time couple of days ago. It genuinely surprised me. It isn't perfect at all, very slow paced at some points, lack of extras, budget and acting in certain areas buuut The Man in Black is clearly the first Terminator, a bit stiff but suits it perfectly and still came across as intimidating 40 years on. I enjoyed the pace, build up and interesting ending.

7/10

Yep. Although I am quite happy to sit through most comic book movies and don't mind sequels to films I like there is very little original about.

It seems Sci-Fi/Aliens are currently doing the rounds for the adult audience (and all the live action fairy tales for the kids + sequels) which I can only assume is because Interstellar and the Martian did very well (plus Star Wars). I do like Sci-Fi and Alien stuff as well and from what i've seen of the Arrival, Passengers and Ryan Reynolds new one they look like they will be good but you do see a trend.

Last night:

American Mary - 7/10

Probably only deserves 6/10 but the lead actress has been a favourite for many years :p
Quirky, darkly humorous, not too much gore but a lot of implied and it centres around 'body horror', definitely not a scary film and very disjointed with an odd out of knowhere ending. Worth a watch.

I watched Mechanic Resurrection last night. 4/10.

The weird thing is I remember the first one being a surprisingly decent film although its been a couple of years but this was dire. Its written like an 80's C movie with an awful script. Still few points for Jessica Alba in a bikini and some lovely scenery and shots that looked fantastic on my projector.

Edge of Tomorrow - 8/10

Not seen it for a while but forgot how enjoyable it was. It really nails the pacing and I always find Cruise watchable and he has his comedic timing down. Very well paced and just seems like its better than it has any right to be :p

Passengers - 6/10

I was entertained enough, it looked great and I could watch Chris Pratt and the lovely Jennifer Lawrence in anything (I may have added a point or two simply for Miss Lawrence just looking good). Ended up all a bit silly though with a weird script at certain points. I doubt i'd watch it again unless to re-visit the visuals.

Split - 7/10

Good fun and one of the better Shyamalan movies, am sure McAvoy had fun making this. But like most it probably wouldn't be quite as impactful second time around. Some weird and annoying things:

The 2 girls the main character was kidnapped with, suddenly boom just dead, the end, don't think we even saw one die and can only assume he was eating the other one judging by the sounds. The main girls uncle side story, assuming the look to the cop at the end when the uncle is coming to pick her up is supposed to be her 'pure empowering' moment and she's going to say no but didn't hit home. Lastly I had some mutton mention to watch Unbreakable before watching this therefore cementing the fact there was a link and I was essentially waiting the entire film for it and kinda guessed what it would be, although was nice to actually see Bruce Willis in the role as I thought they just mention 'Mr Glass' at some point, or the girls father died in a train accident (its mentioned he is taking a train at one point) which was the starting of Unbreakable but nope, heart attack.

Certainly looking forward to his next effort.

Underworld: Blood Wars

If you're a fan of the Underworld movies then you'll like this. Not the best of the series but worth a watch.

I would give this one a solid 6/10 for general films but 7.5 for Underworld. I found it a lot more enjoyable and less all over the place than last time. I do like the fact that despite them not really being much above Resident Evil etc they have still built a huge mythology which they always link to.

The ending did seem very rushed though and not sure exactly what year it's supposed to be now :p

Margin Call - 8/10

I love finance type films, where I would rate The Big Short and Wolf of Wall Street a 9 this gets one lower as its a much lower key look at the 2008 crisis from the inner workings of one company when they discover 'the calculation everything is based on doesn't work'.

Well worth a watch if you're into those kind of films. Big star cast, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons to name a few.
