What is the point of GTA V?

One of the best games I've ever played, solid and fun story. Just step back and realise the effort and time, development that has gone into this game. It's incredible to see where games are at and I think they've done a really incredible job! Some people don't appreciate the effort these days which is sad.

You, and your type (and there are unfortunately plenty of you), are basically advocating for this:

Maybe learn to resize and not hotlink images?

It's one thing to come here and express an opinion about a game, that most view as a good (if not great game).

It's another to come and openly post "I pirated this game because I don't agree with DRM".

well. Escalation and quickly springs a to mind. But jesus christ, that's a terrible attitude. Pretty sure i said that last time the OP had a moan about steam and oil rigs though, so i see he hasn't really changed.

I remember him now.

Completed it then forgot about it (on PS3), tried online a few times but didn't appeal at all. Maybe PC is worth trying due to the improved graphics, is there enough people online to do heists etc?

GTA peaked with Vice city but they applied a lot of work and content with each version. The basic game is kinda irritating I think, errand boy etc but in small doses its ok and I hope they keep making it better. The best hope is a mod taking off that does add gameplay

Yeah, precisely!

And having never really played any of the series before, I was kinda thinking, "surely there must be more to it than this to warrant all that hype, perhaps it is all about the online game?"

But apparently thinking this is hugely controversial.

It's not controversial - You don't like open world games, and created a thread to bash an open world game.

You said that you don't like other open world games e.g. The Witcher 3 and Skyrim, and that sandbox games aren't for you - Not sure why you think GTA would be any different, although sounds like a an excuse to come and bash a game for it's DRM, and no doubt Rockstar hurr durr selling out and going all corporate.

The Witcher 3, I got bored of. Amazing story telling which actually gets a bit too much whilst the game play itself is über-meh after about level 10. Button Mashing crap. Skyrim, I also found to be a terrible bore.....

.....so maybe if the main attraction or point of a game, is a huge sandbox environment (and mediocre everything else), than that game isn't for me.

As soon as it became apparent the OP was too much of a cheapskate to buy the game I stopped taking much notice (yes, from the opening post.

Does not like the game so "It's ****!" apparently, despite it's huge popularity.

I love jumping into it occasionally, and although I like the story I haven't really played that much of it. As usual with GTA I tend to have more fun messing around.

Not liking a game isn't controversial. Horses for courses. There's loads of games that I don't like but other people do.

I think the backlash is probably down to the way you are coming across.

Due to Rockstar's decision to opt for Always On DRM, I decided not to purchase this game and instead installed the 'Full Single Player Free Demo'.

Whilst the style, authenticity, and attractiveness of the world which Rockstar have created really does have to be applauded, as does the characters they have created and the story the game tells....

....after some 30% of my way into the single player campaign, the novelty is wearing thin and the rather thin gameplay is beginning to wear on me.

Is the point of GTA V, a bit like BF4, all about the online game?

Multiplayer seems more popular with most people nowadays but for me, the single player is better – as always. Same game essentially, same beautiful gameworld but no connection problems, no cheaters, no griefing, no exploits etc. it’s just the purest form of the game. The cheating in GTA was rampant until the recent cull but it’s already back.

GTA Online can be great fun (with a good crew for example) and there can be more room for creativity but it can also be far more frustrating than the single player with all of the online issues. The loading/waiting/connecting is beyond infuriating and we know it is not our SSDs or our fibre connections that are the problem. I have had more and worse connection problems with GTA Online than with any other game I have ever played, not sure why but I do seriously suspect their DRM, it feels like it is constantly stalling and doing something in the background. Wouldn’t be too bad if this actually stopped all the cheaters etc. but it clearly does not and just wastes our time when we would rather be playing the game.

I'm exactly the same. Got 30% through and just deleted it. Tired of the errand boy crap.

I don't know how far I got in. I think around 2 hours and just found the whole formula tired and dull. So deleted. The world they made was stunning though, but the game just wasn't for me. I still think Mafia 2 is the best in its class.

Mafia 2 still has the errand boy mechanic. Its very hard to get away from that, as real life also involves the same thing..drive to work, come home, drive the shops etc.

You would need to remove the story/missions and allow the player to create their own story and do their own thing to avoid that. I have no idea how that could be done..

The single player in GTAV was extremely good and I enjoyed it to the point I 100% the SP completely.

In addition, I am playing on replaying SP in first person mode as I think that will be an amazing experience.

For online, I LOVE IT which is fairly obvious by the OCUK crew ranking page - 32 days spent online so far lol

The point of it? Its....fun, simple as but can have its challenging gameplay at times.

It's just a shame that they wasted all that effort by ballsing up the gameplay mechanics, eh?

The driving is terrible. It's a real backwards step from IV.

R* justified this by saying their focus groups wanted a more "relaxed" driving game, where they didn't have to "worry" about losing control, and could speed around the city at full throttle all the time.

Then you have other physics issues. Lack of inertia/momentum. You can drive a lorry into a golf cart and both will stop dead. The heavier vehicle doesn't feel heavy anymore. The bike physics were /awful/. I mean, bikes handled like the bikes from Tron!

Nobody criticised V for its scope or attention to detail. But as someone who has played /every single GTA game/ when they were released, and having loved the majority of them, I can say V was one of the greatest disappointments of all time.

I expected the series to grow and keep getting better, but focus groups made this one a real backwards step.

Sadly, people just tell me that V is not supposed to have realistic physics, because it's "not that type of game". Despite the fact that previous games in the series /were/ becoming more and more accurate with each iteration.

Gah, I hate focus groups.

You know why? Because you can play golf when you go to a golf course.

And tennis at a tennis court

And darts in a bar

And......... that is realism for the vast majority of gamers unfortunately

I remember this guy, he seems nothing more than a troll to be honest. Look at his past posts, he clearly has a massive chip on his shoulder.

I don't quite get it. San Andreas was a good game but the graphics were horrid for its time and the physics were almost non-existent. GTAIV was a true step backwards with its unnecessarily lengthy, bothersome story and a dull, hypocritical protagonist, lacklustre setting and nothing to do. The driving was only realistic if you thought that cars should handle like boats. Don't see which aspects the previous games were getting more accurate, TBH.

I thought GTA IV had better driving so went back to check it and sorry, it was just nostalgia glasses. The driving in V is different but perfectly acceptable and actually pretty fun. And you can still lose control pretty easily.

So, the game which actually looks up to standards on release and tries to go back to what made the series fun after the disaster that was IV is the biggest disappointment. And it's the first game that actually made me roam around and enjoy the world. San Andreas was so ugly that all I wanted to do was the main story and I still didn't manage to finish it out of boredom.

I also have played every GTA game and consider V the best of the series, up there with III and VC. I can't see how the game could benefit from perfectly realistic driving mechanics. Do you see many people criticising Just Cause 2 for not having realistic driving or Project Cars for the fact that you can't go offroad and do side missions or Hot Pursuit for being too arcadey?:p

You say you hate focus groups, yet want Rockstar to cater to elitists who demand perfect realism?:p Isn't that a focus group as well?:p
