Stage 3 Mountune
Thought I'd post my thoughts on the stage 3 upgrade via Mountune having driven around a bit more today. I had it fitted yesterday at Mountune HQ (a very impressive facility), it took around 4 hours to fit everything and test drive it.
I am glad I was not the first to have it fitted as the initial map was not as good and ran a little lean at the top end, but I had the revised 'Cal 2' map which cures the fuelling issues and changes other parameters slightly, and is maybe 2-3bhp more powerful. Mountune are now very confident it will make 200bhp on most rollers, I was told to expect between 200 and 206 as the norm, so its going to be a pretty quick car when finished.
I am upgrading from the stage 2 Mountune package, which is the 185bhp package consisting of upgraded exhaust (manifold, cat and cat back), valve springs, cams, induction kit and a remap to suit.
Stage 3 adds to these existing parts cast aluminium high flow inlet manifold, a larger 60mm diameter throttle body, and another remap, bringing a claimed 200bhp.
It makes the car a lot easier to drive slowly for a start, at low engine speeds in low gears there was always a bit of a hesitancy and jerkiness to the throttle action at times with the 185 kit. Pick up from low revs seems less laboured if you're in a higher car and the engine as a whole seems to rev more freely and feels smoother. You don't need to change down so often and its much more relaxed around town. Cruising in traffic at 30mph in fifth seems a lot more comfortable and responsive. I feel the apparent increase in smoothness to the engine is because the metal inlet vibrates and hums less easily than the standard plastic item - one can't deny the ST has a pretty buzzy engine at high revs, and sounds a bit coarse, but this goes a hell of a long way to helping things!
It gives the car a much much more prominent induction sound, a proper growl at larger throttle openings, a real head turner as it sounds almost like throttle bodies, I had people turning round from 30 yards away when I booted it on a dual carriageway from 30mph in fourth, even at low speeds if you give it some throttle it really growls. I cannot explain how big a grin I had when I first floored it in third
.
The torque seems better lower down and in the mid range, giving much greater pull. The stage 2 kit was very peaky and 'cammy' in its power delivery, and it was easy to be caught in the wrong gear and have to change down. Stage 3 seems smoother with a less pronounced step when the cams start to work, but it pulls harder and faster to the limiter in each gear.
Down sides...it is expensive for what it is, as an ST owner if I had a standard car I feel I'd be hard pushed to spend £3k on a car now given how little they are worth. I already had the 185 kit and figured for my car + £1k I was unlikely to get a much better hot hatch than mine given all the other mods, so it made sense. It is also a fairly rough looking casting and is not painted/coated in any way, it does not look anywhere near as smart as the Cosworth inlet manifold although as this is purpose made for the 2.0 engine this is a better item from a performance point of view for naturally aspirated applications. A proper coat of paint may help the appearance somewhat if you are fussy but I havent bothered.
Overall though...I recommend it, the sound is really something a bit different from the norm and leaves you with a car thats probably a bit faster and a lot more characterful than say, a newer Clio 200.
