I think it's been generally well accepted. You'll always get the infighting amongst owners of various different generations but essentially I found the Evo X to be bigger and heavier but still retaining the comparable performance of the earlier models whilst being more comfortable and well styled with it.
Not sure I'd buy one mind, but I'd like to have a go on the SST box - I've only ever had a go on a manual X.

Although i fully expect the M135i im waiting for to P*** all over both of them
I think the SST box will be a love it or hate it thing for most drivers.
I personally love it, I have the SST X FQ-300 and the gear changes are sooooo quick. Even when you're trying to drive really slowly you end up going really fast as you push the accelerator just a tiny bit and the box changes you up through all the gears with no loss of acceleration - i.e the changes are so smooth and instant you only know you've changed due to the difference in engine note.
However you can catch the gearbox out. The number of times i've booted the throttle to overtake something only to have gearbox lag, followed by turbo lag
Still you do get used to it now, and when i'm anticipating an overtake I either go on the accelerator early, or I click the down paddle a few times, or sometimes I just push the sport button which also kicks down a few gears.

Mine is going to a new home next week, after moving house i just dont have the time or money to get mine back on the road before i head back out to that sandy place again so decided it had to go, it'll be a real shame to see it go, but when i get back this time next year i'll be plowing my hard earned into another, think i'll be hunting for a 8/9 next time.

I have noticed quite a few people have said the same, apart from them being newer are there any other reasons?
I i havnt really looked into VIIIs or IXs but i think the biggest thing over the 8 is the MIVEC engine, some subtle but arguably better looking changes to front and rear bumpers.
there will be loads of differences under the skin.
A IX would be ideal however i'm not gonna limit myself as there are still some good VIII's going around, obviously a newer car would be better but, i'll be more focused on the condition, it'll have to be an RS or have a RS Diffs and 5spd box, something reasonably modified, forged, possibly stroker with around 450-550bhp.
but anyway enough dreaming for now, still a year till i'll be back in an evo, i'm gonna be kicking myself the whole time!
only thing that could sway me from an evo at this time is a dialynx SWB converted audi quattro(only because the sport quattro is WAY out of my price range).

A IX is an VIII MR with some subtle changes, of the top of my head:
Revised suspension (springs at a different height I think)
MIVEC engine (better economy and picks up lower down/faster)
Different nose
