Is this that screenshot? both of them don't look good, the one on the left has no light and the one on the right is over saturated and flat.

There must be something in between and i have seen games do lighting far better than the one on the right without Ray Tracing.

I find RT to be a bit like VR, you don't get to experience it from screenshots. Even video doesn't give the full experience due to you not having control.

Here at 9:10 you can clearly see why the area is lit as it is due to other sources of light, which just isn't apparent from the screenshot.

Whoops, I got the wrong poster it was this one
Yup. I would consider the enhanced version to be a net negative in terms of atmosphere as a result of these "enhancements". There's a reason when shooting video you have all kinds of lights, light controls and many other things, even though we have "perfect lighting". Art direction is still the king.

Artistically the orginal is superior. The mood of the image is far better.

With proper RT you can easily achieve the same mood (or even superior) to the orginal yet we got that. I suspect that they had to kneecap the number of bounces and pulled some shenanigans with the algorithm because otherwise it would have been a slide show with DLSS enabled. Of they just decided to change the artistic direction. Only the devs know.

Edit: As a side note where is all that extra light coming from in the screen shot you posted. Looking at the DF videos it doesn't answer any questions. How big is this opening in the ceiling that place is so evenly lit and bright. I suspect that they took all the criticism they recieved and just turned up the brightness to eleven and said all good.

I didn't think it would be that bad...

Yea i too think the lighting is better in the left image, but it is blurry compared to the one on the right, like it has a bad AA post processing filter over it, FXAA.

The challenger cooler did look cheap and nasty but I nearly went for it myself lol

You dodged a migraine.

You do, but you also thought the lighting in the screenshot was incorrect. The video explains why it is correct.

Have a search for people living under New York City. It's a sad existance, but does show similar lighting in the train tunnels.

DF are massive Nvidia shills, i don't even waste my time watching their videos.

But i'm no expert on lighting, so i'm not going to argue with it. still doesn't look right to me tho, the light fall off stops at the wall furniture with nothing on the wall 8 inches behind it. culled or natural?

more utter waffle

Sigh, round and round we go....

I'm of to enjoy a true next gen ray tracing title here, enjoy your kid cartoon games :D PS. bet you I could beat you in fortnite

Not to mention, youtube videos compress it to hell i.e.

It's funny isn't it though, that the only ones who seem to dislike ray tracing are amd fans (I wonder why..... :D :p ;)) and with no proper evidence at all to backup said claims other than "ray tracing off looks better to me" meanwhile how many in depth tech. pieces with side by side comparisons do we have praising ray tracing? Or are ALL of them bought by nvidia?

It'll be interesting if/when amd beat nvidia at ray tracing, watch as the tables get reversed, amd fans = "best thing ever!!!!!" nvidia fans = "ray tracing isn't that good"

I'm not sure what area you mean, but I agree the screenshot doesn't look great on its own. The video shows that there is a lot of scattered light coming from the left, from an area in the ceiling, which then explains the greater amount of light in the comparrison. The original never bounced that light leaving it looking so dark. It feels quite natural playing through that area.

Ye gads, the "enhanced" version is awful! It looks like her face is covered in jelly/grease. And the lighting is way worse, not better.. the original is definitely giving the impression of being lit by a naked flame, the "enhanced" version is like typical office overhead lighting.
