AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

That’s absolutely atrocious. Genuinely making me feel like taking my custom elsewhere.
#capitalism innit? :)

@tamzzy Ah its all coming back to me now.. glad my last Intel was a 6700K :)
most people have short memories...hence etailers get away with the gouge.

the only thing that will save us from the gouge is if there's plentiful supply of the new CPUs at lauch.
and even then, it's not a 100%, as i'm sure all the etailers will see what each other have listed them for, and match the highest price. effectively forming a cartel.

Am I reading that right?
There were only 30 8700K CPUs in the whole of the UK at launch?
Seems hard to believe.
who knows. the only thing we had was gibbo's word. truth or not is/was up for debate...

I'm leaning towards an 3700X to put into my ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F GAMING. I don't want to upgrade CPU for another 2 years at least. GPU upgrade wise I want to hold onto 1080Ti untill next summer. Think this is a good plan?

What’s your current CPU? If you don’t plan on upgrading for two years, your next upgrade will have to be cpu and Mobo as it will be a new socket?

Intel did an effective paper launch, as originally the 8th Gen wasn't due for launch until Q1' 18, rather than Q3/4 '17, that was the first move by Intel recognising they were going to start losing the desktop market share.

Supplier/distributor stock was appalling (to say the least) until well into December, and even then prices weren't great, though it wasn't gouged nearly as much as the 9th Gen was.. Luckily AMD have stacks of Ryzen 3xxx available, so there should be good competition and pricing at launch from 'most' retailers.

Well it will certainly make the most use out of your current B350 board, which will be the best part of 5 years old by the time you need to upgrade it. :)

I went to a competitor on release day and they said only ocuk had stock and they were binned haha , i rang and ordered a 5g bin from them yeah 500 quid was a lot of pennies but worth it as i sold it on for 300 after 7 month

What's the thoughts on getting a x470 motherboard, I don't think I need pci-e 4 just yet and I'd like to avoid a chipset fan.

For context I'm upgrading from a 3770k with a 1070

You're limiting yourself to which mobos have bios flashback unless your retailer is willing to do it for you.

All MSI B450 boards have it, and most of the higher end X470's except Gigabyte, but their boards are pretty pants compared with the MSI/Asus offerings.

Best value by far is getting a good X470/B450 board, and if you really want to flash a board on the cheap then just use an Athlon 200G(E), they go for about £20-25 second hand. Much cheaper than going X570, if you want a board that doesn't have flash back, or you want to use a crap retailer that won't help you out.

USB Flashback is only available on (some) MSI and Asus AM4 boards. Gigabyte and Asrock ones don't support it. AMD might provide "boot kit" loans like they did with Raven Ridge but I would imagine that'd take a while for delivery.

3. Do you think it's worth spending a little more to get DDR4-3600 RAM, or should I get DDR4 3200 RAM with a cheaper mobo?

I just wanted to offer a little more insight into this for you.

Ordered by bandwidth and first-word latency, I have taken your desired transfer rates and compared them by using a competitor. I don't know in which country you live, but I have used UK pricing, with no retailer or manufacturer preference. The settings I used were to include a heatspreader, be non-ECC (unbuffered), and in a 2 x 8 GiB kit. Prices given are for the cheapest option matching the search criteria.
  • DDR4-3600; CAS 15; 8.333 ns;
  • DDR4-3200; CAS 14; 8.750 ns;
  • DDR4-3600; CAS 16; 8.889 ns;
  • DDR4-3200; CAS 15; 9.375 ns;
  • DDR4-3600; CAS 17; 9.444 ns;
  • DDR4-3600; CAS 18; 10.000 ns;
  • DDR4-3200; CAS 16; 10.000 ns;
  • DDR4-3600; CAS 19; 10.556 ns;

That 3,200 MT/s CAS 15 kit seems like a steal.

The b550 sounds promising, thanks for the info :)

No problem.

I saw this on Reddit while checking through my resource backlinks. Love it.

Ahh damn, that glance reading making me see VRAM :(

It's something I've never looked at what picking up a mobo. The answer to this question is probably "the spec list", but where do you see about the VRM.

Nope. The spec sheet won't give you those details. That's just not something the manufacturers like to share.

There are two ways; either you study the board and decipher yourself, or you read reviews or watch videos of people doing it for you.

any of you chaps use process lasso? I'm really chomping at the bit to get an 8c/12c part and experiment with SMT core avoidance on certain applications, seeing as I'll finally have enough physical cores to do this.

Thinking it'll be great for lightly threaded applications/games

Is there a consensus / informed opinion on if the budget b550 boards will launch in q3 or q4 2019? Or, might it even be later than that?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Opinion - These boards will clearly be better than most previous gen. boards, so I hope people will wait for them to be launched, rather than purchase current gen boards / more expensive x570 boards... This could force AMD to release b550 sooner. It doesn't help that they've tried to keep the b550 chipset a secret.
