*** Nintendo Switch ***

It'll be nice to see what they can add to games with the extra power, although I'm not sure that much will make use of it. They have a huge customer base on the soon to be lower powered hardware so I'm sure games will be designed for that first and foremost.

I'll probably get one eventually. Not because I need it or I'm unhappy with my current one, but I'm sure I'll be keeping my Switch for years to come. It'll be nice to have a top of the line one that I know will play games well long in to the future. I can see this being a great 'retro' console once we've all moved on to VR/AR everything.

I've said it in here before but I'm turning into a bit of a Nintendo collector so rather than decide I want one down the line and then struggle to get one I'll just pick one up while they're available. Recently bought a Wii U while they're still reasonably common. Again not an investment or anything (fairly sure it'll be worthless in a year or two) just wanted to own one for completeness. I have a problem don't I :p

I really don't want to buy a third Switch (OG & Lite)

What I'd like to know is how older games will take advantage of it, will they need to be patched or just have an automatic performance boost?

If it's significant, I may bite, but if it's just an incremental boost, it's a no for me

Most of the demanding games such as Doom, Witcher 3, Dragon Quest, and Xenoblade already have dynamic resolution scaling and will automatically benefit. They will also have a locked instead of the current variable frame rate.

Anyones thoughts on the new switch model rumours? Seems like an announcement may happen before e3 with the amount of sources saying as much.

It's been rumoured for almost as long as the Switch has been around, but yes, it does look like a Pro model is coming, though it's worth noting that this isn't going to be a "Switch 2" by all accounts.

I must be one of the very few Switch users who never uses it as a portable device, so I am very keen to see if they can improve docked performance. No doubt all the talk of 4k will be upscaled using nvidia's technology, but if i can just play Breath of the Wild without going into single digit frames in the forest areas, I'll be happy. But then there is the sequel and will probably have to wait years for another console to play that smoothly.

I feel like this Pro model needs to happen whether they want to make it or not. I know Nintendo dances to the beat of their own drum and the sales show they are right to do that, but I feel they are going to get left behind technologically soon as there is a massive shift to 4k/ray traced gaming over the next few years. I understand the portability is a big selling point for the Switch (not for me), but Valve are apparently releasing a new portable device, and i doubt it would take much for Sony to come up with something in the next few years.

Edit - forget to mention Links Awakening remake, that game should not be suffering the kind of slowdown you experience in it, criminal given how simplistic it looks

Having just bought a Monster Hunter Switch I'm not too bothered by the possible new one as I'm basically certain all games will still run on the 'old' Switches, and the main benefit of 'new' Switches will be 4K which is no good to me as I'm using a 13inch 1080p USB monitor beneath my main PC screen, so I'm using the Switch format more for its utility and small size as a desktop console than as a powerful console on a big TV.

There's also the high chance that scalpers will make them hard to find for a while.

On a separate note I was annoyed that 3 ACA Neo Geo games I wanted have been taken off for political reasons.

Super Side Kicks 2 and 3 and Winning 11 allegedly feature Taiwan as playable teams, and a certain country doesn't like that at all so the rest of World doesn't get to play them at all. Great.

Supposedly they patched Taiwan out of a Neo Geo Baseball game and bought it back so hopefully they'll do that with the football games too.

So what?

Better graphics won't make the games play better, and when you can't get Nintendo games on any other platform then they'll sell regardless of the graphics.

It could be argued that poor frame rate or unusable resolutions affects game play, but 4K is pointless unless you're 2m from an 85" screen due to the limited density of cells within the fovea, and Ray Tracing adds very little beyond graphics.

Nintendo have always done their own thing and never kept up with the latest tech and/specs. They make great fun games that dont need the best graphics to enjoy them.

Forget 4k/RT then, the ray tracing tech is still in its infancy. What about the slowdown though? Like I said, I can understand some of the denser areas of BotW slowing a bit (god only know what they plan to do for the sequel), but Links Awakening? That game should run smooth on a mobile.

I'm not a fan of the Switch. It has a scratchable screen, joycons that easily break, and the portability of it is lost on me. So for selfish reasons, I hope the switch pro really improves performance in docked mode. And they release more games with that Nintendo charm that made me buy one (and keep it) in the first place. Not just Wii/WiiU ports also.

I ended up selling my Switch and getting the Lite as I was only using in handheld. I think the Lite is a better console in terms of build quality. It just feels more solid and well made.

The Pro model will resolve this without going down the daft route of targeting 4K/Ray Tracing. It only needs a mild bump in performance.

Switch Pro will be announced this week, get excite people!

Switch Pro has a larger screen and its OLED, bit more power with 4k upscaling tech to output 4k resolution to TV's via the upgraded dock. What's not clear is if the Dock itself has additional hardware inside it that allows for the upgraded graphics or if it's updated hardware inside the Switch itself. Given that Nintendo has a history of hardware add-ons for it's consoles, I would not be surprised at all if the new Switch itself's internal hardware is just a minor revision of the original to maintain good battery life with the upgraded screen and all the extra performance is from hardware inside the Dock.

The Switch Pro will be priced higher than the base model's $299, however the base model is also gone. Manufacturing for the base model will be turned off in July and stock sold, the Pro replaces the base model, the Switch Lite will continue to be sold

Its looking more likely this time but I believe it when I see it.

Agreed matey, people have been saying this since the original came out, I expect eventually they'll be right.

I could imagine Nintendo throwing another curve ball and releasing a little TV only box like the PlayStation TV which supported Vita carts.

If the switch pro is anything but a bigger switch with OLED, fixed joycons, 4K etc there is going to be so much disappointment…

Could you imagine the fan boy tears if it was a TV only box?

Supposedly there'll be limited stock in Europe too. Feels like preorder situations are usually okay in the UK compared to America when it comes to consoles. I remember GAME having PS5 stock for at least a few hours when they went live (though this was at night).

The Switch was released in March 2017, so an upgrade is due.

you can now mark your calendars for June 4 Nintendo has something to show you soon and you'll be able to order at Midnight on June 4 *wink* can you guess what it is? *wink*

I remember when the switch got released and everyone in this forum was banging on the same. Too slow, graphics arent good enough etc etc. Yet it sells like hot cakes, they can bring out 10 year old games and absolutely smash profit on them. If Nintendo knows anything, it's how to cater for the market and make a **** ton of money.

Nintendo hasn't ever actually made a hardware add-on that boosted power, has it? I mean they've always wanted too, it just never came to anything. So maybe this is their time.

N64 expansion pack.

Regardless of the pedantic points about what it does hardware wise, it enabled higher frame rates, better draw distances, better textures, and more simultaneous objects.

The Super Gameboy for the SNES also added new graphics and features such as fast forward for Gameboy games.

They generally avoid it though because it fractures the user base which is what killed off Sega.
