What Graphics preference settings are you all using for PC VR?
Do you mean graphics preference in the oculus software or just graphics options in games?
I just went with quality for oculus software and adjust everything else in game. You can also choose your resolution in oculus software as well in the devices section if you have extra performance.
What gpu you using?

It had been a good few weeks since I last played some Project Cars 2 (had to reinstall) but was really impressed how well it looked.
These are my setting I can remember...
Bit rate (Oculus Debug Tool) = 500
Oculus Device Resolution = Max, i.e. slider to right.
In game VR resolution = default, I.e. 1.0
All other in game setting = high/ultra except grass = low

Maybe it was my CPU upgrade or Oculus’s USB compression is better these days but it all looked sharp and hardly any distance fuzziness

Wanting to venture into a VR world and from what I have watched / read so far it seems that the Quest 2 ticks most of the boxes in terms of value for the cost.
I see that one place is offering this as a bundle (256GB model) for £419 with the Elite headset. Albeit one years warranty. JL would want around £448 for the same package but with two years warranty.

Our intent is primarily to use it as a PCVR experience, not sure if the 256GB is a little OTT in that respect, for the extra storage, or might be actually useful....?

Not sure if we will use the standalone feature over that of a wireless PCVR experience, but then again up to a couple of weeks ago, after trying out a friends Playstation VR, we hadn't got a clue what VR could mean.

So..... Does a 256GB seem a little OTT for a primary PCVR usage and is the Elite headset worth buying from the start...?

Anything else to think about for the initial purchase..?

Thanks

It's a pretty good deal to be fair.

You'll find plenty of people arguing for the different sizes here, and for different reasons. I would say, there's rumours of the 64gb being replaced by a 128gb soon, so maybe check to see when that's rumoured for.

I'm happy with 64gb, but then I'm not a power user, and I think for anything larger, I'd probably prefer to use my PC's power for games. That may change in the future though, but by then I'd probably look to buy whatever the new model was.

As for the headstrap, it's a personal thing. Some people really like the elite, some people prefer the stock strap (not so many). Personally I'm using the stock strap with the old facial interface (got a vrcover one now) tied in, to make it more comfortable.

Yes, if you plan to only use the Quest 2 connected to a PC then the 256GB version might be too much. But, when you get the Quest 2 I think you will find that ability to play in other places too good to pass up. Playing games like Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Thrill of Fight etc. without the need of a computer at all is brilliant. Then there are some exclusive games like The Climb 2 and Resident Evil that you can only play on the Quest 2.

The Elite Headstrap is fine. But, there are better options.

Things that you should consider buying (depending on budget.)

A router/access point dedicated for the Quest 2. (you home router might be good enough, but, in most cases the dedicated router is a much better option for wireless PCVR gaming)
A USB 3.0 cable recommended for use with the Quest 2. (Playing with a cable is a drag, literally, but, it's great to have one when you are playing sit down games or in emergencies, Something from Anker or Kiwi)
A different facepad. ( I would class this as a must buy, check out the VRcover site. They really improve the comfort and usability of your Quest 2)
IF you wear glasses a prescription lens insert is advisable.

OK, the only other thing is your PC. Is it up to the task? What GPU do you have?

Thanks for the reply.

I was kinda edging to the 256GB with some little understanding but still thinking of perhaps liking the standalone experience.

In our house we have a RT AX88U main router and then a RT AX58U as a mesh device. It offers Wi-Fi 6, if that is needed.
So router wide we should be OK.

Any advice on the preferred head strap.?

The PC has a 5Ghz overclocked 9900k and a 3070 GPU, perhaps also OK for reasonable gaming experience.?

Ill take a look at the mentioned facepad, thanks. Also the cable.
Guessing that Virtual Desktop is the way to go.

Not too bothered about budget, well meaning that the cost of the Quest 2 is ok so the peripherals etc would be in line with that cost.

Thanks again

PC is fine then! And good network, so I wouldn't bother with a link cable to be honest, either virtual desktop or airlink (which is Oculus software, and free). will be fine.

Just thought, if you have multiple users, and multiple accounts on the headset, that could well require more space, so the larger one could be a better choice.

If you are thinking you'll end up using it standalone as well as on pc it might be worth going 256gb, it also does allow you to pretty much not have to worry about storage. Some more AAA games will probably start requiring bigger space as well

@Unseul
@KeanuIsLife

Just two of us for now as users but grandchildren will add to that.!

Thanks for your replies, send like the 256GB will the one of choice.
Perhaps the wired option might not be needed for us.
Need to look for head pads....

If going for the 256gb, you might as well get the one with the elite headstrap at that price. I will say that there have been reports of the elite strap breaking in some cases, though it seems less common now after they re-designed them.

Check out the kiwi design strap pad too, for the original quest 2 strap, I know a few people that like that. A bit of a bodge way to do similar, is if you buy a VRcover facial interface, you can use the old foam one, and use velcro or cable times etc, to bind it to the back of the strap, and create a similar effect (this is what I do). If semi regularly swapping who's wearing the headset, this is definitely an advantage over some more personalised headstraps.

I really wouldn't bother buying a wire at the moment, first try out your wireless setup, it sounds like it should be fine. You may also want to check out methods/accessories that allow you to add a powerbank to the back of your headset. This has 2 bonuses, the first is obviously longer play time, the second is that it can act as a counter balance, making it more comfortable.

@Unseul Thanks, I have asked if JL will price match, they offer their typical 2 yrs warranty. Doubtful as they do not sell the bundle that Currys do.

will check out that strap pad, might be an option if I get the bare 256GB Quest 2 and go for the warranty over the bundle. Thanks again. At least I know that spending around £45 or so, standalone price, on the Elite headstrap isn't the only option - even with the thoughts of making one....!

Point taken about the powerbank, interesting thoughts about the balance of the unit.

I used an RTX 3080 I think the bitrate was 2Gbps in Oculus at the time as I used a sh** cable.

The Graphics Preferences
Here you can adjust your Refresh Rate and Rendering Resolution.

Refresh Rate: The number of times that your Quest 2 screen is updated with new images each second. You can set your refresh rate to 72, 80 or 90 Hz.

Rendering Resolution: Adjusts the resolution that the app or game you're using is being rendered at. The maximum rendering resolution you can set is 5408 x 2736.But I got to 4128 x 2096 @ 72 Hz.

What do you use?

I noticed that while increasing the refresh rate and rendering resolution, it resulted in improved visuals, these adjustments had a negative impact on overall performance. Even with the newest and most powerful GPU, maxing out values for the rendering resolution slider with a 90 Hz refresh rate resulted in dropped or missing frames, which created a less smooth experience in VR.

You could also purchase from OcUk, they'll throw in free shipping too. Any version, they are all the same just depends on your storage needs. I would say get what you can afford.

If you're willing to take a slight gamble, maybe try a popular 2nd hand online retailer that offer 2 years warranty (we're not supposed to talk about competitors here).
