*** Sky TV Cancellation & Negotiation Thread ***

I don't know if anyone is affected or even aware but Sky have just made some changes to some peoples account -

I left Sky and rejoined at around April last year but at no point did anyone inform me that that there was any such trial and at some future date yet to be decided we'd have to pay extra to watch Sports in HD. That day turned out to be today when I lost my HD Sports channels and Sky wanted an extra £5.50.

A quick Google search shows a lot of people unaware of any such introductory trial and if you call Sky today you're met with a pre-recorded message on the subject and a 20 minute wait as people call in to complain.

A quick call to cancellations sorted it as the staff there didn't know anything about this "trial" either and are offering 20% discounts to those affected and in their words "it's a joke".

TL;DR - Lost your HD Sports of Movies channels? You've been affected by a Sky experiment gone wrong. Call to get them reinstated and ask for a discount.

I just encountered this disgrace. On a 50% off code but i refuse to be ripped off even the £2.50pm. Got the local number off saynoto0870, 020 7126 7020 (0844, hell no). Got them to waive the fee in a roundabout way by applying the package and rebating the 2.50, for, i think, six months. Its about then my contract is up, and I have no intention of resubbing.

Quick question for the Sky guys about cancelling and signing up as a new customer. I have an active Sky subscription at my parents' house from when I lived there years ago.

I'd like to cancel this and have someone who actually lives there (!) sign up as a new customer. This isn't strictly a money saving exercise (although obviously the savings will be nice!), it's more so I'm not responsible for a service at somewhere I don't live. But I'm wondering whether they will run into any problems signing up once I've cancelled, as we all share the same surname?

Cheers

no problem, reading back through this thread and you would see it's actually recommended that people cancel every year then sign up under another persons, regardless of if their surname is the same.

I've scanned through this thread and it's prompted me to sort my sky package. Getting fedup of my box crashing and losing my recordings and series links. I've just looked at my package and i'm paying £59.25 a month for sky tv with sports package. I can't work out where the extra 10.25 comes from as entertainment plus is £27 and sports is £22. Am i really being charged £10.25 for HD?

whats the process to get better deals and a new box?

I recall our older boxes crashing, and in the end I actually opened it up and fitted a 12cm can in it powered off the hard drive lead! It rarely crashed then.

But our new top of the range box (2TB?) is pretty much rock solid. It has frozen, but it so rare it's not worth mentioning...

Our box is in a wooden TV cabinet with a door, hence not great for cooling.

I've had the box for about 6-8 year, i forget exactly but don't fancy having to mod the thing just to keep it working.

Can i really just cancel and then have my wife start a new contract? or is it better to threaten to leave and get a deal?

SKY has annoyed me this week, my SKY+ HD box has dies so I wanted a replacement (the 2TB version).. according to their website existing customers can buy it for £149 however support says I will have to pay £269 as I've had a discounted box in the past.. I've no idea when as I've purchased all the recent ones outside of SKY. Anyway in the end they said I may get a better price if I order on their website.. so I tried to order and no luck, the online chat help wasted another 30 mins of my time and ended up saying I'd be better of speaking to support.

At the moment I pay £85 a month and have been with them for 12+ years at least so not happy.. I'm tempted to cancel but in this area there isn't really an alternative :(

What do reckon I should do, threaten to cancel, I never believe that actually works.

Absolutely. But this was their older box which was famous for over heating, and I had it in a sealed TV unit which wasn't good.

I believe you can cancel, and then anytime during the cancellation period (30 days?) you can change your mind.

I've not be bothered to do this yet - I'd be worried about losing my "unique" package. I got the HD channels when they first came out which came with F1 HD. You can't get this anymore so I'd need to get Sky sports which would work our more expensive.

new customers always get a better deal if you do it properly and go through quidco as well for cash back, on top of that fet a F and F code and your bill should be substantially reduced as well as completely new box.

sign up in someone elses name and cancel the current subscription. i got over £150 cashback through quidco on top.

Nothing stopping you from trying the latter then doing the former if it doesn't achieve anything.

i've had various phone conversations with people about current contracts and they have zero power to beat new customer deals especially when you take quidco into account.

it's a waste of time even trying, only if you have been overpaying for years they may offer you the 6 months completely free deal with no contract, thats the only deal i've ever heard of that beats new customer deals.

last year I had problems with my old white sky+ box, I called sky to get another box. They told me I had to play £180 for a new box, I said no and told them to put me through to cancellations. Once I was put through I was asked why I was leaving, I told them my sky box was faulty and I was not going to pay £180 for a new one.

I was offered a new HD box for £29, which I accepted. Like you we have no cable in the area so can only really go with sky.

you might be surprised.

we pay like £55 a month for 2 boxes (multiroom), sports, movies, HD, unlimited broadband, line rental and talk unlimited.

if we only took 1 box it would be £45 a month for all of the above, this includes quidco discount and F and F code though.

i probably get a lot more than you and pay less, we have the top tv package too EE+ or whatever it is.

you could have gotten the box for free by signing up in another persons name meaning £29 saved straight away, on top of that you would have been on a new customer deal meaning a regular monthly saving on top of the £29.

in 99 cases out of 100 it's usually better to cancel and re-subscribe again under someone elses name (partner, brother, father, room mate, etc)

Why don't you buy an 2nd hand Sky box or new one from a 3rd party seller? I'm sure it will be cheaper than Sky directly.

I honestly can't get over how much people are paying for sky. Especially when there are better/cheaper alternatives out there.

anyway, my friend just phoned up sky and got the following deal as an existing customer

Entertainment Package
Unlimited Internet
Phone (weekend calls only)

£30 a month

I didn't think that was too bad to be fair

They are a netflix subscriber, and did the now tv group on deal so not bothered about movies and tv box sets

What better/cheaper alternatives can you suggest?

All comes down to the channels you watch.

If you don't want sports or movies or SKY channels....Then Freesat ? :p

Thats what I did...Never looked back and sky is a long distant memory.

If you want those channels...Then you have to pay.

I just refuse to pay for TV :p

impossible to suggest a package when you have given us zero information to go on

do you like movies, sports, documentaries, catch up tv, tv box sets

are you in a virgin area, do you have sky, if not....have you been a customer within the last 12 months, do you have quidco? etc etc etc
