What film did you watch last night?

The Killer's Game - 4/10

Half of the time it felt like a John Wick rip off, the other half it felt like a John Wick spoof. Tone is all over the place, feels like it wants to be a romance, action and comedy film and fails to be any of them really.
Same score I gave it:

The Killers Game (2024)

Starring Dave Batista, who looks ridiculous in this. The man is 55 and the tanning beds have not been kind to his skin over the years, so he's a odd colour and his skin it like an old leathery hand bag.

I'm sure I saw him in an interview state he would like this to kick off a series of movies like John Wick did for Keanu, but this bombed hard ($30 million budget, made $5 million Worldwide!)

I'm not surprised. It doesn't know what genre it wants to be. It starts like a weird romantic comedy but the leads don't really have any chemistry, but then has cartoonish violence but with really gory (CGI blood) kills.

4/10.

Lucky Number Slevin - 7/10 - Such an under appreciated movie whose script is razor sharp and the cast do a fantastic job all round. It does suffer from maybe being a little too complex with all the various twists and turns (imagine a Guy Richie film like Snatch etc) and a few situations are a little contrived to make the plot flow, but overall its a really enjoyable film.

The Inbetweeners Movie - 8/10
The Inbetweeners 2 - 5/10

Following on from a rewatch of the whole 3 seasons of the show, followed it up with the movies. The 1st I've seen many times, probably about 5-6 times. A real guilty pleasure of mine. It's a great ending to the series and very re-watchable. They honestly should have ended it there.

The second, not so much, just watched it for the sake of completion. It finally takes the smut to a level where it's no longer funny and the cringe level is really high. Also, too many penises.

The first one is very funny and a logical end to the series. We've all been that age and you have a summer of fun before people have to get jobs or go to university.

The second one is just a cash grab.

The TV show Fresh Meat is the unofficial natural progression of Simon's time at uni.

Alien: Romulus

3/10 - What a load of plop. Might as well have called it Teenage Alien. Irritating characters, no suspense build up and I actually wanted the aliens to kill them all off. The only good bit was the sound of the gun when it got used as it brought back memories of the best Alien film.

Interesting - we watched Romulus last night too, really enjoyed it!

Obviously not a patch on Aliens, but by far the best instalment in the franchise since. A couple of disappointments, but nothing which really ruined it. We'd give it a 7-8/10

The CGI on Ash was awful... like really bad! It definitely broke the immersion a bit
The end part with the human baby/alien hybrid felt quite rushed - they obviously wanted to mirror the end scene of Alien with Ripley fighting the alien solo and ultimately flushing it out into space, but IMO it would have been better just left on a cliff-hanger with the pregnant girl heading back to the colony in cryo, with the audience knowing she injected herself and it's all going to end very, very badly!

The Booth at the End (2020) Amazon Freevee 7/10

This popped up on my recommended list having recently watched Needful Things.

Can see why, it's an intriguing film and kept me hooked to the end. Reminded me of Phone Booth (2002) with Colin Farrell. A slow burn, don't want to say any more as it will spoil.

The film is based or follows on from a series back in 2010 (two seasons) which I never heard or knew existed. Now I would like to find these as there are so many questions from the film!

SMILE 2 - 6/10. Was ok but didn't like it much as original and about 30 mins too long.

The Apprentice -7/10. Love or hate him he is who he is. Solid film capturing his earlier days and rise to fame and fortune

The substance 6.5/10
Wtf did I just watch?? Have to say hats off to Demi Moore for a very brave role. Quite a creative film in all but pretty grim body horror moments :p I'd have given it a 7+ but for the overly crazy final act that lets it down a bit.

Wild Robot 9/10 i have zero shame in enjoying anything animated with robots. This was up with Wall-E for how good it is.
The missus was out so I had a Friday night in watching a children's film about a robot, a goose and a fox. Rock n roll!

What a beautiful film though and quite sad in places. The animation was excellent and the soundtrack was fantastic too. I guess it's hard to go wrong when robots and geese are involved though!
