The Pascal GTX 1080 Ti Owners Thread

Very dissapointed by the zotac after this review, i've been on the fence about buying this card for ages, i'd go ftw3 now or strix

I've never seen the FTW3 go above 65 unless I uncap the framerate which would bring it up to 72 - 75c. Even the fans only hit 1030rpm. The CPU Phobya 120mm fan is the loudest thing in the case at 1500rpm. Saying that, I only have 4 fans running very low in the case. One 120mm for the hard drive/psu area. About 800rpm, max is 1800rpm? Two 140 roof fans at 420rpm and one rear 120mm fan at 750rpm, cannot hear it even at its max 1000rpm.
The card idles 0rpm between 27 - 29c.

The PC is still quieter than a PS4 Pro. Probably in line with my PS4 1200 chassis. Can barely hear it in quiet rooms.

It is great this in this time to be able to game and fans don't dominate a room. I remember pausing games, taking the headphones off and wondering, wait... this is odd, its so quiet. Quiet gaming and headphones = heaven.

@Gregster will love this:

Those temperatures.

Cool YT channel, I love his monitor, the temp drops is amazing 10-15%, watching him do it on a ftw3 card now, thanks :D

My Gaming X fans go absolutely bonkers more often than not. Firewatch and Overwatch being two of the least expected.

That was why he said to check the materials first before applying it.

Even at that, i'm not entirely sure how that stuff spreads when the heatsink is pressed down onto it, even a bit of overflow could cause something to short. You can repaste your gpu with regular tim, do it tidily and when you check later its usually spread out a little, presumably that stuff doesn't do that or only does minimally?

Best way is to tape it off really so only the die is exposed. Any overspill will not short it to the caps next to the die then.

But usually you use a very thin layer and spread it out manually.

Sort of tape would you use as it gets pretty hot round there, wouldn't it just peel off?
Or do you fit, remove, remove tape and refit? Is there no worry about trapped air with liquid metal?

Kapton or similar. Not really needed as it doesn't really spill or spread when done right. However it's another level of protection.

Not really a fan of liquid metal as it can give more problems that's not really worth it for a few degrees over the next best paste.

Funny how times have changed as I once remember Arctic Silver was the most hated paste here many years ago. Yet it is gooey unlike that liquid metal.

Though, the last I read from last year and going back further, IC Diamond got a lot of stick. Apparently it was very abrasive trying to remove it.

Never heard of that before but after a google looks like useful stuff, have to get some to keep in the shed I think.

Are the Ti's around the same performance as each other like the 1070's and 1080's? Just different coolers really?

Yeah but that can have a big effect on frame rates too. More cooling means less throttling. FE cards need aggressive fan profiles to keep its clock speeds steady for example. If a card runs cool it can maintain its performance over longer periods of time with higher boost clock speeds, and has more headroom for overclocking.

Some cards come overclocked out of the box and the price sometimes reflects that, but people mostly buy them for the effective coolers they use. Anybody can overclock a card.

Thinking about selling off my 1070 FTW2 and going for a Evga SC Black 1080ti.

Add me to the list.
Asus ROG Strix OC:

Managed to get the core to 2012 while gaming and +300 on the memory so far after playing for 5 minutes. Card is an absolute beast!
Josh.
